Size is Everything: Four Steps to Building Muscle Mass

One goal that many clients name as a top priority is: “I want to put on some size!” These guys want to get bigger, stronger, and more muscular without getting fat. The good news is that you can gain size without looking ungainly or bloated.  Here are my four strategies that can help you gain quality lean muscle!

1. You have got to eat to build muscle mass. According to sports nutritionist, Craig Stevenson, you should eat at least 21 calories per pound of goal body weight. If you weigh 175 pounds and you want to gain 10 lbs. of muscle, you need to start eating 3885 calories today (185 x 21 = 3885). Also, you need to increase your protein intake by 1.45 grams per pound of goal body weight. Again, if your goal is to be 185 pounds, you will need to eat at least 250 grams of protein per day.

2. Make your workouts shorter, yet more intense, lasting under an hour. A super workout will increase your testosterone and human growth hormone levels, and that is what you want. But somewhere into your workout, about 60 minutes or so, another hormone, cortisol, kicks in and as you fatigue, this is the stuff that actually breaks down muscle tissue. In summary, shorten your workouts, increase your intensity and make each rep of each set count.

3. Go into the gym with a plan. If you have 45 minutes, make sure you know what you are going to do ahead of time. I recommend focusing upon two muscle groups per workout. If your biceps are lagging don’t do them at the same time you do back since you utilize biceps when you do back anyway. You will not be able to give them 100%. Know your muscles, have a varied routine for each group, and know what body parts to work together. For example, if you do a heavy back and chest routine on Monday then work your legs on Wednesday. That way your arms and shoulders will have ample time to recover by Friday when you will blast them.

4. Learn the importance of rest between sets during your workouts and make sure you give yourself ample time for rest and recovery between training sessions. Most trainers suggest 30-90 seconds of rest between sets. Others suggest as long as three minutes rest between sets of heavy compound movement exercises like dead lifts, squats and bench presses. By rest I don’t mean dropping to the floor or playing on your phone. Between sets move around, catch your breath, stretch, and drinking water. As far as rest between workouts, give each muscle group from 48 to 72 hours to recover, depending upon the intensity of the previous workout.

Brandon Morse: Gay Olympians ‘Tainted’ Sports Expedition

Confession: I didn’t really watch the Winter Olympics while they were on. I wasn’t against it or anything—I just had other shit to do.

But I did see that a certain Adam Rippon had been ice skating on rainbows, and skier Gus Kenworthy was also out and proud in Pyeongchang representing the U.S.

In fact, Rippon and Kenworthy made quite the pair on Instagram where they posted some unbelievably handsome/adorable/are-these-men-even-real-how-can-they-look-so-perfect photos.

Under a shot of the men with their arms around each other Kenworthy wrote, “I feel incredibly honored to be here in Korea competing for the U.S. and I’m so proud to be representing the LGBTQ community alongside this amazing guy! Eat your heart out, Pence. #TeamUSA #TeamUSGay” followed by American and rainbow flag emojis.

Kenworthy’s dig at Pence caused some understandable controversy. Telling Pence to “eat his heart out” is incredibly unfair as there’s no evidence that he has a heart to begin with. I mean, a fleeting glance at Pence’s long anti-LGBTQ history as Indiana governor, in Congress and now as vice president will show you that Pence is cruel and hateful little man.

But cruel and hateful men are running the country right now, so that’s fun. GOOD WORK AMERICA. Please Jesus go vote for Democrats in every election for the rest of your life because it’s doubtful any of us will live long enough to see the Republican party redeem itself in any meaningful way. (Note to Log Cabin Republicans: Get everyone out of the cabin safely and burn it down.)

Anyway, the Rippon/Kenworthy bromance (or maybe more, who knows? That’s their business. But I’ve heard rumors about what happens in the Olympic Village that would make Pence go running for mother) has angered some.

One such person is Brandon Morse, writer for Red State. In a Feb. 12 piece Morse writes that “the shock value of being homosexual is pretty much all but dissipated. A man announcing he’s gay in today’s society is worth about a shrug.”

In other words, gay Olympians are so boring that Morse had to spend 700+ words writing about them, but OK.

Morse laments that “the two men turned their sports expedition into a political one, and every action they had there was tainted with it.”

As if the Olympics isn’t already infused with politics. And anyway, “tainted” is an ugly word. Here, I fixed it: “every action they had there was FABULOUS with it.” Much better.

Morse writes that Kenworthy and Rippon, “seem to believe themselves to be special due to their homosexuality. Furthermore, they seem to believe that many people are aghast at this, particularly vice-President Mike Pence, whom Kenworthy and Rippon use their platform to denounce regularly.”

In an effort to defend the vice president, Morse posts a Tweet from Pence to Rippon that reads, “I want you to know we are FOR YOU. Don’t let fake news distract you.”

But the thing is, Pence’s long anti-LGBTQ history isn’t fake news. It’s real life. Expressing support for Olympic athletes is also, like, the bare minimum a vice president can do. It’s hardly a repudiation of his anti-LGBTQ agenda. Besides, Pence is one impeachment away from the presidency and he’s hand-picking anti-LGBTQ judges for Trump to give lifetime appointments to. Pence has the power in this dynamic.

But Morse appears to see Kenworthy and Rippon as a couple of mean girls.

“It seems to them,” Morse writes, “their sport was just the ticket to the political platform from which they now grandstand.”

Granted, Olympic athletes start training when they’re practically still in diapers, but sure, Kenworthy and Rippon probably decided to dedicate their lives to their respective sports because they hoped one day that the country they live in would elect leaders who hate them and they’d be able to swing their medals around in defense.

Morse might think that being a gay athlete is boring, but what’s really boring is another straight guy’s take on how gays need to shut up. After all, the shock value of being a homophobe is “pretty much all but dissipated.”

VH1 Ru-Veals ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 10 Cast

VH1 revealed the cast for the milestone 10th season of Emmy® Award-winning “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” The newest queens vying for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar” were announced during last night’s episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars,” followed by a Facebook Live that introduced fans to the 14 competitors. The supersized season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” premieres on Thursday, March 22 at 8:00 PM ET/PT and will feature 90-minute episodes, giving fans more fashion, lip-syncs and drag than ever before. The Emmy® Award-nominated after-show “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” will premiere immediately following at 9:30 PM ET/PT.

“While preparing for season 10, I realized that one of our contestants was 11-years-old when we first launched Drag Race,” said executive producer and two-time Emmy® Award-winning host RuPaul. “The fact that we’re still here and still going strong is because of our talented queens.  They are the heart and soul of the series. And as they continue to evolve and push the boundaries of drag, so does Drag Race.

WATCH:

The fourteen queens competing to make their mark on the historic 10th season include:

Asia O’Hara (Dallas, TX) Twitter/Instagram: @AsiaOharaLand

Texas is back in the house. A formidable competitor on the pageant circuit, Asia won Miss Gay America the first time she entered. Multi-talented, Asia has a costuming business on the side, designing for color guard teams and ice skaters.

Aquaria (Brooklyn, NY) | Twitter: @aquariaofficial, Instagram: @ageofaquaria

Aquaria already has a big reputation preceding her into the competition. At just 21, Aquaria has been photographed by Steven Klein for the pages of Vogue Italia. Confident and at the center of New York’s Drag Scene, Aquaria has the support of some of nightlife’s biggest legends.

Blair St. Clair (Indianapolis, IN) | Twitter: @ BlairStClair, Instagram: @ blairst.clair

A small-town girl with big city dreams, Blair St. Clair is a Broadway baby at heart. Combining her love of musicals with her passion for drag, Blair plans to sing, dance and act her way across the finish line of the competition.

Dusty Ray Bottoms (New York, NY) | Twitter: @DustyRayBottoms, Instagram: @dustyray

Self-described as “dark, glamorous and trashy,” this punky queen defies categorization. Look for the queen with the signature dotty-faced makeup. A Kentucky native who moved to the big apple to pursue acting, Dusty channeled his desire to perform into drag.

Eureka O’Hara (Johnson City, TN) Twitter/Instagram: @eurekaohara

She’s back! Season 9’s Southern belle departed way too soon after injuring her knee. But Eureka is back following knee surgery, and hungrier than ever to prove herself the second time around.

Kalorie Karbdashian-Williams (Albuquerque, NM) | Twitter/Instagram: @kalkarbdashianw

Kalorie’s infectious giggle might be the first thing to enter a room, but it’s her gravity-defying ass that has all eyes on it as she leaves. This twerk queen proudly flaunts her curvaceous body in daring sexy dance performances.

Kameron Michaels (Nashville, TN) | Twitter: @KameronMichaels, Instagram: @kameronmichaels

You’re equally as likely to find this tattooed muscle queen down at the gym pumping iron, as you are to find performing at her local drag bar in Nashville. Deliberately intending to capture strength and beauty, Kameron Michaels is the body builder Barbie doll.

Mayhem Miller (Riverside, CA) Twitter/Instagram: @TheOnlyMayhem,

Mayhem enters the competition with big expectations, as the sister of Drag Race alumni like Raven, Morgan McMichaels, Delta and Detox. Mayhem dazzles her Los Angeles’ audiences with polish and sass.

Miz Cracker (New York, NY) Twitter/Instagram: @miz_cracker

Proud to call Bob The Drag Queen her drag mother, Miz Cracker began doing drag as a member of Bob’s Marches for Equality in Times Square. Pretty and witty, Miz Cracker captures you with her beauty, and then surprises you with the belly laughs.

Monét X Change (Bronx, NY) | Twitter/Instagram: @monetxchange

Monet blurs the lines of comedy, performance and New York City grit. A degree in Opera Performance means she’s the singer of the season, while her bright colorful street style ensures all the judges eyes will be on her.

Monique Heart (Kansas City, MO) | Twitter: @IAmMoniqueHeart, Instagram: @kevinandmonique

A creative well-rounded queen who knows how to do hair, makeup, dance… and make an entrance. A devoted Christian, Monique enters the competition hungrier than most to win, and with a promise to live up to her moniker as the “Heart of Season 10.”

The Vixen (Chicago, IL) | Twitter/Instragram: @TheVixensworld

Hailing from Chicago’s South Side, The Vixen combines elements of political art and protest into her performances. This vocal, woke queen brings both activism and fire to the stage – and is not about to take on her competition lying down.

Vanessa Vanjie Mateo (Tampa, FL) | Twitter/Instagram: @VanessaVanjie

Get these cookies, baby! Drag Race Season 3 and All Stars Season 1 star Alexis Mateo’s drag daughter brings electricity to the stage, with her high-energy dance performances and winning personality. Will Vanessa finish the job that Alexis Mateo started?

Yuhua Hamasaki (New York, NY) | Twitter: @YuhuaNYC, Instagram: @yuhuahamasaki

Originally hailing from China, Yuhua moved to Manhattan’s Chinatown when she was seven. Now a sickening seamstress by day and a hard-working queen by night, Yuhua regularly sews gowns for New York royalty like Peppermint and Bob the Drag Queen.

2018 Grand Couple

John & Nancy Desmond – When their only child came out to them as gay as a 28-year-old adult, they were confused and scared for his welfare, as is often the case when family members become suddenly and intimately immersed in an unfamiliar subject. Jumping in with both feet, the Desmonds founded PFLAG Tampa and relied on their newfound LGBTQ friends from an open and affirming church to introduce them to this inclusive community. They attended and became members of many LGBTQ groups and organizations, John was a member of the Hillsborough County Human Relations Board for six years and helped craft the county’s 2014 Human Rights Ordinance that included LGBTQ protections and paved the way for the resurrection of Tampa Pride. Both John and Nancy are frequent speakers at the meetings of the Board of County Commissioners, School Board and Tampa City Council. They have opened their home to homeless LGBTQ youth, including a budding drag queen, through the Hillsborough County Homeless Coalition. They also sheltered a transgender young man whose family refused to acknowledge his transition, causing severe dysphoria. Well known on both sides of the bridge for their advocacy, just this past year, the Desmonds started the new, long-overdue, PFLAG St. Petersburg chapter. They also volunteer as the Community & Nonprofit Groups Liaisons for Tampa Pride, reaching out to both local organizations and college LGBT clubs across the entire East Coast.

John and Nancy met while attending the University of Connecticut and have been married for 42 years. They like to say that the best thing that ever happened to them was when their son came out.

2018 Community Organization

The Suncoast Softball League – The Suncoast Softball League is the Tampa Bay area’s largest GLBTA sports league with over 450 members in 3 levels of play. They play ball year round, both here and travelling to sister tournaments throughout the country. Their Gasparilla Softball Classic tournament held in February each year brings upwards of 70 teams to the area to play ball, but also to enjoy the nightlife and businesses. The league isn’t just about sports. For all of their 25 years, they’ve raised money, lots of money, for the community. Each year through their SSL’s Got Talent fundraiser, they raise thousands of dollars that they donate to local charities, from Tampa Aids Network in the early years to a more diverse group this year: Athena House for homeless female veterans, Suncoast Animal League, Vets for Pets and Meals on Wheels. They also volunteer with many of their sister organizations, with league members in leadership positions in both Tampa and St. Pete Pride among other groups.

Vendor Exhibits

The vendor exhibit areas are in two main areas: 9th Avenue and 8th Avenue / HCC parking lot. First, the 9th Avenue area is one block from 14th to 15 streets and is located due north of the HCC main stage. The second area is the HCC parking lot area and continues along 8th Avenue towards Centro Ybor. Look for the Hamburger Mary’s Entertainment Stage in the heart of it all!

Hotspots Hotties: Anthony & Hunter

How long have you been together?

Just about 8 years.

How did you meet?

Mutual friends on Facebook. A couple of “likes” goes a long way.

Favorite place for date night?

We’re pretty low key, so we’ll either grab a bite and a movie in Ybor, or drink some homemade cocktails and play video games together.

Favorite pride event to attend?

We love Tampa Pride. We live in Ybor, so it’s amazing to see our neighborhood transformed by the festivities and spend the day with our friends.

Favorite bar in Tampa?

We gravitate towards Southern Nights when we go out — the drag shows are always great!

Favorite restaurant in Tampa?

Depends on who you ask. Hunter is vegan, so he loves getting the grilled tempeh sandwich from Bodega. Anthony has a big sweet tooth, and he’s always craving the bread pudding from 4 Rivers Smokehouse.

Something that Anthony absolutely adores about Hunter?

I love Hunter’s sense of adventure and ability to make the best of any situation. He can easily put me in the best mood with his smile. I think the key to success for us is making the best of everything and being grateful for our experiences.

Something that Hunter absolutely adores about Anthony?

Anthony is such a goofball, and I tend to be more serious and reserved. I love how he breaks me out of my shell, plays pranks on me and we can just laugh together. He’s also such a curious person, so I’m always learning something new from Anthony.

Favorite vacation spot?

We recently have a new found love for San Francisco! But we also take annual trips to NYC.

Favorite hobby to do as a couple?

We love taking short road trips on the weekends to explore all the nooks and crannies of Florida. You’ll see us acting like tourists, taking photos and flying our drone.

An Interview with Drag Sensation Kenya M. Black

In the last few years the State of Florida has been KILLING IT on the National Pageantry scene. The latest to conquer is Tampa’s own Kenya M. Black, who recently won the title of Miss Gay USofA at Large and is also the current reigning Miss Tampa Pride. As we are celebrating pride this month, I though it appropriate to sit down with Kenya and find out more about her!

What was the first drag show you saw and tell me about the experience?

The first drag show I was at was in Pulse in Orlando about nine years ago. It was Roxxxy Andrews, Blade Matthews, and Angelica Sanchez. I was in awe. The glitz, the glamour, and the beauty!

When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession?

I decided after that night at Pulse. After watching Angelica perform I knew this was something I wanted to do for my lifetime, as she was so inspiring and I saw so much of myself in her. I decided I wanted to make it a profession after going to USofA newcomer my first time. The love and respect that was shown to me was heartwarming. To know that I can touch people through dressing like a woman, it was I had to do forever.

Who is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother and why?

My drag mothers are Aysia Black and Alicia Markstone. Those ladies saw so much potential in me and pushed me to be the queen I am today. And my favorite would be my sister and mentor Alexis Mateo. She is so passionate about the art form of drag. She keeps me on my toes and keeps me fresh.

What’s your favorite number to perform and why?

My favorite number would be “Fergilicious” by Fergie. It shows all sides of me as a performer and a person. It’s always a crowd pleasure and the energy from the song gets my blood flowing.

What’s the best thing that has happened to you in drag?

The best thing that has happened to me in drag is winning Miss Gay USofA at Large. I’ve had so many people believe in me but I always doubted myself. I’ve done a few national pageants and made the top five, but never thought I was good enough. Winning Miss Gay USofA at Large lit a fire under me. And the flame won’t be going out anytime soon.

Speaking of Gay USofA do you remember how exciting it felt be crowned and how has it changed your life?

It was beyond exciting. I have been wanting to be a part of the USofA system for a while now. I was always afraid to do an at large pageant because I didn’t want to be seen as “fat” but after talking with so many people the best thing was to be myself and be comfortable in my skin. So winning Miss Gay USofA at Large has opened so many doors for me career wise, but has also made me a mentor. I didn’t realize how many girls I would be helping once I won.

What differentiates you from other Queens (Makes you Unique)?

What makes me unique is that you never know what you might get from my performance. You will always get Kenya, but you never know which one. It’s the Gemini in me…LOL!

What does the future hold?

My future is limitless. I just want to do drag and make a name for myself until the wheels fall off!

Dixie Longate Talks New Show ‘No Instructions’

Dixie Longate, a character created by actor Kris Andersson, has appeared in popular engagements of the “Dixie’s Tupperware Party” all over the country. The not your grandma’s Tupperware experience is filled with naughtiness and a whole bunch of laughter, and fun that mixes an interactive sales-pitch with genuine Tupperware sales.

After many years of focusing on the Tupperware party shows, Dixie introduced a new show, “Never Wear a Tube Top While Riding a Mechanical Bull and 16 other things I learned while I was drinking last Thursday” in 2014 to rave reviews.

Now she has a new show “No Instructions” that will be premiering as part of the Outlandish Comedy Series at the Sunshine Cathedral on Saturday, March 3 at 8 p.m.

It was a pleasure to once again sit down with Dixie for this Hotspots exclusive interview:

Were you always a performer, even as a child, or when did it start?

I was never a performer or on stage. I started selling Tupperware, and a friend said you should put this ion stage. I took it to New York to a little theater and it got a lot of attention. I was then put on off Broadway and that got more attention. After that the world tour started.

When did you start selling Tupperware?

August 31, 2001 was my very first Tupperware party.

Where were you raised, and did that influence Dixie?

Mobile, Alabama is where I am from, and Dixie is definitely influenced by my upbringing…just listen to her voice and mannerisms!

Is it true that while on a talk show in London you sold over $700 to the crew?

I was doing a show a long time ago and I was promoting an upcoming show and brought a little bit of Tupperware with me. The crew got so excited about the things I talked about, and I sold a little bit over $700 to them.

How did it feel to be the #1 Tupperware saleswomen?

Yes, I was the number one Tupperware sales lady…can you believe it? They have an annual Tupperware event called the Jubilee; it’s like the academy awards of Tupperware. They brought me up on stage and they gave me a sash, and some other stuff and then they hand you a microphone.

I remember the very first time I was at the Jubilee and I was sitting in the back row and I thought I will be up there one day. Fast forward a couple years and then I was. While I was talking a smile came over my face as I was thinking of someone in the back row that was probably feeling the same way I did a couple years prior.

After so many years doing Tupperware shows, what made you decide to venture into performing new shows?

After the show I am always in the lobby of the theater chatting with people. Sometimes I am there over an hour and people constantly tell me I have the best stories and that they feel that they were getting their own private show. Eventually it made me think that I could do another show about my stories, and I did!

My goal is really to put smiles on people’s faces, and affect them in a positive way

What was the inspiration for “No Instructions?”

The world has changed. In the past everything came with instructions. Now there are no instructions anymore, and there seems to be no guide to plan on how to run your life. I might not know the answers on how to do things right, but I sure as hell know when you are doing it wrong.

Are you excited to once again be performing as part of the Outlandish Comedy Series?

I am. Matt Farber does such a good job putting together a fun group of people who all have different ideas and opinions to share!

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you?

I am real good at riding a mechanical bull without falling off. I use one hand on the bridal and one hand on my sippy cup of Jack Daniels.

What’s ahead for Dixie?

There are a lot of irons in the fire and I am very excited about the future. I have some meetings in L.A. and I am working on a book. But rest assured my shows will always have new stories.

For more information on Dixie, go to: Dixielongate.com and don’t forget Dixie will be premiering “No Instructions” as part of the Outlandish Comedy Series at the Sunshine Cathedral on Saturday, March 3 at 8p.m. For tickets, which start as low as $30, go to: OutlandishFL.com.

Winter Party Festival’s 25th Year Anniversary

Winter Party Festival marks a major milestone of 25 years with an impressive lineup of internationally renowned DJs, a brand-new partnership with Masterbeat, and the return to the iconic Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel as host hotel and site of the biggest pool party yet.

This year’s special occasion for the internationally acclaimed Festival will be marked with an incredible roster of events, all culminating in the 25th Edition Beach Party, the event that started it all.

WATCH:

As you know, Winter Party began in 1994, as a one-day event, one of the first Miami mega-dance party ever held on the beach. Over the years the Festival has grown and evolved to the weeklong extravaganza that it is today and now celebrates the unique spirit of “chosen family” among the LGBTQ community from around the globe.

“People always ask me what it is that makes Winter Party Festival different from all other events like it, and the answer is love,” said Michael Bath, Events Director for the National LGBTQ Task Force. “It is a labor of love for the staff and consultants involved, and especially for the dozens of volunteers who have sustained it and allowed it to flourish over the years. And all of that culminates in an atmosphere of love among the guests who attend our events.”

The four men who founded the Winter Party Festival in 1994 conceived it as a one-day event, but it has endured for a quarter-century, brought joy to hundreds of thousands of people and raised millions of dollars for LGBTQ causes. It is an honor to be part of this legacy,” added Michael.

In addition to long-standing events like the elegant VIP Cocktail Reception and the newly reimagined ArtScape, the Festival is raising the stakes on this year’s silver anniversary by hosting two of its nighttime events at one amazing location.

Winter Party is moving its Saturday and Sunday night parties to the James L. Knight Center, a world-class multipurpose entertainment complex. Both events will be produced in partnership with Masterbeat, a group that specializes in conceptualizing and producing theme events above the ordinary to provide our festival attendees with a unique once in a lifetime experience.

“The Winter Party Planning Committee took the beginning of this season to listen to our guests and understand how we could improve their Winter Party experience,” said Stephen Seo, Winter Party Festival Chair. “We’re making huge changes, including introducing all-new Saturday and Sunday events at the James L. Knight Center. This means more space to dance and bigger production as part of our partnership with Masterbeat.”

Winter Party Festival, which has a proud tradition of bringing internationally renowned party brands from Brazil, Italy, Spain and more, is showcasing an international lineup of iconic DJs from the United States, Mexico, Canada and Spain to reflect its global appeal.

This “Party with a Purpose” has been produced by the National LGBTQ Task Force for the last 13 years, and is an important fundraiser for both the Task Force and the South Florida LGBTQ community. The organization donates a significant portion of the proceeds from Winter Party Festival each year to LGBTQ advocacy and community groups in South Florida through a grant-making process administered by the GLBT Community Projects Fund at The Miami Foundation.  In July 2017, the Task Force donated a record-breaking $300,000, for a grand total of $2.7 million given back since the Task Force took on the production of Winter Party Festival.

Q&A: ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ All-Stars Contestant Chi Chi

In Week 4 of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 3, Ru brought out my favorite challenge: Snatch Game. Here is who the girls impersonated:

ChiChi – Maya Angelo

Aja – Crystal Labeija

Kennedy – Phaedra Parks

Ben – Paul Lynde

Shangela – Jennifer Lewis

Trixie – RuPaul

BeBe – Grace Jones

The runway look was Flower Power, and in my opinion everyone did well.

The clear stand outs at Snatch Game were Ben and Shangela with a shout out to Aja (Congrats…as she is doing so much better in All Stars than she did in season 9). The middle of the pack was BeBe, with Kennedy, Trixie and ChiChi clearly at the bottom.

During the Lip Synch for your legacy Ben and Shangela ties (splitting the $10,000), but they each earned a right to send someone home. However, they both had previously chosen ChiChi, so only one girl went home. ChiChi had the most gracious exit of the season and it was a pleasure to sit down and talk with her:

How has your life changed since you were on Drag Race?

It’s amazing—now I am some kind of mini celebrity. I now only have one job instead of three…I am a full time drag queen and I make a great living doing what I love!

What has been some of your favorite cities to visit as a RuPaul Alumni?

Seattle, LA, New York…I really like the big metropolitan cities.

How exciting was it to get called back for All Stars? Did you consider not coming back, and if so what made you come back?

It was exciting to be considered. There was never a doubt in my mind about coming back. Anytime they want me back, I will be there!

WATCH:

How did you prepare differently for all stars than you did the first time you were on the show?

Even though I had a feeling I would get a call to come back, I didn’t prepare at all. After I got the call, I just scrounged up some stuff in my closet and hopped on a plane and went back to L.A. I think that may have been my downfall as I wasn’t prepared as I should have been.

You had the most gracious exit. Where did that come from?

It came from me being in the bottom every week and realizing I had some more work to do., I knew it was my time to go home. I went to All Stars, and did they best so why would I be sad. I was so happy I got the opportunity, and I am using what I have learned for lighter fluid to spark the fire in me to do better.

Now that you have been eliminated, who do you want to win?

Of course I am routing for Kennedy, because it’s time to have a dancing queen win.

What’s Ahead for ChiChi?

Music…possibly putting out a song or 2, and maybe even an album followed by a Grammy.

For more information on ChiChi go to: ChiChidevayne.com.

An Interview with Drag Sensation Nicole Halliwell

What was the first drag show you saw and tell me about the experience?

Divas Las Vegas: the incredible Frank Marino and his cast of uncanny celebrity impersonators. It was overwhelming for me. The first real exposure I had to drag was that – and it sparked something in me. Not only could I idolize my favorite pop culture stars. I could become them! And people would pay to see it! That’s what put the ball rolling into celebrity impersonations for me. I started my drag career impersonating Elvira, Mistress of the Dark thanks to “DIVAS!”

When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession?

Not long after Divas Las Vegas, the gears turning in my head, I dressed up as Elvira for the first time (2004) and went to my day job on Halloween in costume. A manager from a restaurant in Hard Rock Hotel spotted me and offered for me to come by his business later in the evening for his Halloween event and mingle with the crowd – and said he’d pay me. Who am I to turn down extra money? So I showed up later to camera flashes and groups of people asking me for pictures, and found out he had told them the real Elvira would be there. It was insanity – I felt like a real celebrity! At the end of the night he handed me $500… and I thought…I could get use to this…and so it began. The following year, I had my own show at the Improv Comedy Club as Elvira, and each year after my appearances grew. I created “Nicole” in 2007, and I’ve been working my way up the ladder for more than a decade… and I’m still doing Elvira!

Who is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother and why?

[Sniffle] I never had a Drag Mother! And I still firmly believe that you don’t need one – make your own damn path and legacy!

My favorite queen would have to be the legendary and always supportive Nikki Adams. When I first started making a name for myself, Nikki was always kind to offer great advice (that I still use to this day) and great laughs. There’s lots of talented girls in town, but very few that have bulldozed their own path quite like her. Today’s drag is so different than when I started. Instagram looks are great, death drops and amazing costumes are impressive…. but everybody does that now. Nikki (to me) is the total package. A multi-talented pageant icon, and a business woman. I identified with her work ethic immediately. She taught me that a professional and carefully curated queen will thrive. And she was right! She’s truly classic showbiz – originating from a time when drag was a less competitive sport, and more a highly regarded art. She embodies all the layers of poise, talent, and brains needed to be successful and I’m thankful she’s been able to pass along her wisdom to me. It’s gotten me far.

What’s your favorite number to perform and why?

“HOCUS POCUS”! This production is my heart and soul. It’s gone from being a one-off drag show production number to a full-blown Wilton Manors Halloween tradition. Last year I was so proud to make it a traveling show! There’s something about being on stage with these incredible performers and friends, and all of us sharing the love and passion for this movie as kids. When we’re all together we get immersed into the show and it just becomes this giant symphony that we all contribute to. Filling up clubs over capacity and the roar of the audience truly makes it my absolute favorite thing to perform. We’re back on tour for our 5th year in 2018! Shameless plug : Check us out at Hocuspocuslive.net!

What’s the best thing that has happened to you in drag?

Meeting one of the Spice Girls and then traveling to LA to perform on America’s Got Talent! I dreamed up this idea to appear at Sugar Factory in Miami for Mel B’s promotional tour appearance in replica Spice Girls looks, and it turned out to be more than I could’ve ever imagined. She was glued to us the entire time, and was so busy chatting that we didn’t realize mass media/news outlets, and photographers for major publications were snapping away. Our pictures (as the drag Spice Gurlz, IG:@omgspicegurlz) ended up on newspapers, blogs, and magazine covers all over the world overnight. Just a few months later there we were standing on stage in front of thousands at a taping of AGT in Los Angeles, and then on TV in front of millions! We still get featured on their ‘flashback’ featurettes, and our photos come up when you google search Spice Girls. It’s NUTS!

What differentiates you from other Queens (Makes you Unique)?

I consider myself a shapeshifter and a business queen! I can adapt to almost anything…into whatever style or brand that I’m required to be, and I know how to negotiate and close a deal. Fetish Parties, Corporate Events, Burlesque, Cosplay, Character Lookalikes, Classic Divas… I love a challenge! Being so versatile (in drag! LOL) has opened doors to a lot of opportunities for me that most drag queens wouldn’t normally see. Don’t get me wrong, I’m surrounded by VERY talented, incredible artists and performers whom I adore, most of whom are far more talented than me in many ways – but I’ve got my own unique style and brand of doing things, which is my little corner niche of the market. There’s nobody who really does what I do. I guess that’s why I’m still around!

What does the future hold?

With so many twists and turns, who knows! I’ve been fortunate enough to continue to be successful in this business, so I’m carefully steering this clown car to keep myself on the path! In the immediate future: I am going to focus on my new show at the incredible Lips Fort Lauderdale – called Twisted Broadway; every Wednesday (lipsfla.com)!

I am  also about to celebrate (in March) the one year anniversary of our amazing show Slay Thursdays at Southern Nights, and I’ll be launching 3 new drag-related businesses in 2018. Regardless of what the future holds, I’m thankful for everything I’ve experienced thus far, and all the incredible people who I’ve gotten to work with along the way!

First Impressions Are Everything

We’ve all had that time when we flubbed a first impression. That time when we were set to meet someone for the first time and something went really wrong. Perhaps it was the poppyseeds in the teeth from the morning bagel? Or a skirt tucked into the pantyhose at the back, revealing more than you ever intended? Or the piece of toilet paper dragging on the bottom of your shoe? It’s all fodder for a stand up comedy act. But a bad first impression doesn’t have to be the result of something as major as the skirt in the pantyhose. It can stem from something as simple as terrible listening skills or negative body language. Read on a for a few tips on making a good impression, with some specific suggestions for those times when you are most likely to need them.

Active listening

Tell me if there is anything worse than someone who isn’t listening when you’re speaking to them? You can tell from the look on their face that they’re working out what to say next and it will probably have no bearing on what you’ve been saying whatsoever. Or they are thinking about what they’re going to have for lunch. Either way, it doesn’t make a solid first impression.

A great way to make a good first impression is to be engaged. Listening to what the person in front of you is saying and responding to it accordingly. Parrot back some of their words, so that they know that you have heard them and ask them relevant questions, which incites them to keep talking. The thing most people want most in the world is to be heard. If they didn’t, Facebook and Twitter wouldn’t have a leg to stand on as social media platforms.

Body language counts

In the same vein as active listening is body language. We say a lot without saying a word when we meet someone, particularly someone new. The non-verbal cues that the other person picks up from us are just as important as the verbal ones. For example, not shaking hands with someone who offers theirs and if they don’t offer, not offering yours, can be taken as a snub. Having your arms folded across your chest while someone is talking might seem comfortable for you, but to others, it has the appearance of negativity, of a closed mind to what they are saying. It can even appear aggressive.

Facial expressions are part of body language. Some of us have what’s known as ‘resting bitch face’. This is where our normal face looks sad or mad, even when that’s not what we’re feeling at all. If you’ve been told you have that, be aware of it when you’re meeting new people. Make an effort to avoid it.

Good eye contact is another great way to make sure that your first impression is a good one. Eye contact is a positive, engaged reaction to someone else. Looking over their shoulder, at the floor or worse, at some part of their body, is not.

Good conversation starters

The old adage says that you should always stay away from religion and politics. In this day and age, that’s probably more true than it’s ever been before. There are certain topics that should be off limits until you know someone fairly well. Pontificating your views on touchy issues can lead quickly to a negative impression. Assuming things about the person you’re meeting is also fraught. Example? you don’t want to talk about the senior’s discount at the shop you’re standing in front of with someone who MIGHT not be a senior!

So what’s safe, besides the weather? It’s always safe to ask the other person about themselves. Most people like to talk about something they know a lot about and what better topic is there than oneself? It will also give you the chance to pick up on something they have said and expand on it, using those active listening skills, all while you are maintaining good eye contact and after a vigorous handshake. Just don’t ask “what do you do?” or one of the other standard conversation non-starters (see below!) Instead, you can ask things like “So, what should I know about you that I can’t read about on your LinkedIN profile?”

Other options?

  • If someone has introduced you to this new person, ask them how they know that person.
  • If you’re at an event, ask them if they’ve ever attended something similar before.
  • If you’re at a new job, ask about the best part of their week so far.

If they’re not talkative about themselves, avoid asking the same benign questions that people always ask. They don’t lead to great conversations, on the whole:

  • What do you do?
  • Are you married?
  • Where are you from?
  • How are you?

#1 tip for first impressions at a social gathering

Compliments are your new best friend. If someone has a handbag you admire, walk up to them and say so. The person you are speaking with will be happy to receive a compliment, albeit indirect, and it’s a good way to begin a conversation. But be genuine: if you are faking it, it will show.

#1 tip for first impressions on a date

Be positive. Even if things go wildly wrong: the waiter drops soup on your date; a passing cab splashes both of you as you stand waiting to cross the street; whatever happens, take it in stride and remain positive. Nothing says ‘loser’ like a 34 year old having a tantrum in the middle of the street.

#1 tip for first impressions on the playground

Making new friends as an adult is HARD, particularly breaking into the ‘mommy cliques’ at the playground of your children’s school. Avoid talking about anything related to the school and instead approach a group and ask their opinion on the best place in the neighborhood to get a haircut for Little Timmy. They’ll be more than happy to share their wisdom and you’ve got an in by being open and curious.

#1 tip for first impressions online

These days, you are just as likely to ‘meet’ someone for the first time in the digital arena as in the real world, so it’s vital that your online image is clean. I’m not referring to your picture or avatar, though these should be suited to the platform (LinkedIN: professional; Facebook: fun but not awkward; Twitter: something more than the egg). Search for yourself regularly on search engines and social media to see what people will find when they look you up, because they will look you up and you don’t want to find embarrassing shots of you knocking back shooters in your underwear as the first link they find.

#1 tip for first impressions in any situation: men vs. women

The thing that men are most impressed by? Eye contact and a good handshake – nothing limp or ‘wet fish’ like. For women? Eye contact as well, plus a genuine smile. So men and women might not be as different as originally thought!

At the end of the day, you have three to five seconds to make a first impression. Make it a good one.

This is HOT

Barbra Streisand has been a show business staple for decades, from Funny Girl and Hello, Dolly to The Way We Were and, more recently, the Fockers franchise. Whether gracing a stage, screen, or album cover, Barbra’s iconic silhouette is a globally-familiar image. We know Barbra the star, but how well do we know Barbra the woman?

In Dr. Alma H. Bond’s (became a highly successful psychoanalyst in private practice for 37 years in New York City. She “retired” to become a full-time writer. She has written 23 books)  latest installment of her On the Couch series, Dr. Darcy Dale―a renowned New York City psychiatrist whose expertise has been sought by such larger-than-life women as Jacqueline Onassis Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and Hillary Clinton―is confronted by Barbra, dismayed after 30 years of minimally successful therapy. Over the course of a year, Dr. Dale conducts an intimate psychoanalysis, breaking through ego, defense mechanisms, and repressions to go deep into the heart and mind of one of America’s last remaining superstars.

Barbra Streisand: On the Couch is a well-researched biography that spans Barbra’s life from early childhood to present day. Combining true facts from biographies with her own professional background in psychology, Dr. Bond provides a unique glimpse into this iconic figure’s remarkable life and work. Published before Barbra’s own, long-awaited memoir, it is an essential companion―a sensitive, objective, pitch-perfect opportunity to look behind the voice and image and fully understand and appreciate Barbra the woman.

“Barbra Streisand On The Couch” is presented by Bancroft Press, 320 pages, and is available nationwide for under $20.

Warming Up and Stretching: Essential Components to a Super Workout!

General warming up refers to any physical activity that jacks up muscle and body temperature. Warming up is essential to your workouts in the gym and every other athletic activity for that matter. Examples of whole body general warm-ups are light jogging, calisthenics, jumping rope and riding a stationary bike. Warming up for 10-15 minutes also affords you the opportunity to get psyched up mentally for a challenging and successful workout.

Warming up involves movements that are similar to what you will be doing (whether it’s weight training, powerlifting, swimming, running, or tennis), but at a much lower intensity level. This not only increases muscle and body temperature, but also provides a rehearsal of the actual event, which may improve your performance. For example, in the gym, if you are preparing to do bench presses, do some light weight dumbbell bench presses before loading up the bar with monster weight. Typically, one to three sets of 10 – 15 reps using a light to moderate weight should be sufficient; more advanced exercisers may need to warm up longer and more intensely to achieve an optimal body and muscle temperature.

There are several psychological factors created by warm-ups. Skilled performance improves with brief warm up activities identical or directly related to the sport. Warming up also helps you to rid yourself of distractions and clear your mind as you focus upon the tasks ahead. There is however one potentially negative effect of warm ups: if your warm up is too long or too intense you may end up too tired to work out!  Don’t overdo your warming up session. Generally, a moderate 10- minute warm-up is great for a weight training session. A longer and more specific warm-up, say 20 minutes, is preferred for a specific athletic event like golf, tennis or a marathon run.

Stretching is another very important preparatory activity used to improve flexibility and physical performance. Flexibility may be defined as the range of motion possible around a specific joint. In weight training, a lack of flexibility can lead to injuries including muscle strains and sprains. After warming up, perform three reps of at least one static stretch for each major muscle group you will be training. Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds or until you feel a slight amount of discomfort. Never bounce, jerk or force a stretch and make sure to breathe out on each stretch.  More extensive stretching is typically more beneficial during the workout between sets of exercises for the muscle groups that you are training.

Remember, a five to ten- minute warm up along with a few light stretches can heat up your body and muscles and really add to the success of your workout.
