Need Wood: Not That It’s Any of My Business

Hey Woody!

Is it true that tea is bad for your libido? Say it isn’t so!

—  Tea for Two.  Or more

Dear Tea:

Some researchers suspect that the estrogen levels found in tea are as high as the levels found in George Michael’s dressing room.  Meaning, you won’t be able to get it up unless you’re in a sk-nky public toilet waving your d–k at an undercover cop.

Researchers suspect, though they have no real evidence, that tea’s estrogen levels may be high enough to disrupt male hormones temporarily, causing a loss of libido.

The key words here are “suspect” and “temporary.” No one knows for sure. But if you’ve got a hot date planned I’d stay away from it.

Hey Woody!

This is going to sound like a weird question for a gay sex advice column but I need advice on how to talk about “the birds and the bees” to my kids. My lover and I are at a loss as to how to bring the subject up and what’s appropriate to say.

— Gay Dads

Dear Dads:

You’re looking for something *appropriate* to say to your kids and you came to ME?  Man, that kind of optimism should be framed.

All right, here’s The Birds & The Bees, Woody-style:  A man sticks his erect penis in a vagina and that’s where babies come from. A man sticks his erect penis in a woman’s mouth and that’s where jewelry comes from. A man sticks his erect penis in another man’s mouth and that’s where heaven comes from.

Just in case you wanted something more serious, I asked my grumpy advisors what they thought.  Here’s what they recommended telling your kids:

Talk to them early. Age 10 or 11 is too late.

Talk to them often. Like sex itself, once is not enough.

Take advantage of “teachable moments”—running into a pregnant neighbor, seeing a TV program, etc.—that can be springboard into a discussion.

Tell them to run. When they turn 18 and they see me coming, it’s the only advisable thing to do.

Also, use resources like Planned Parenthood’s Talking About Sex kit, which includes a videotape and booklets: www.plannedparenthood.org/parents/talking-to-kids-about-sex-and-sexuality

Hey Woody!

Hotspots is a respectable publication. Your column however, seems to drag the whole thing down.  There are plenty of guys who do not have these bizarre, deranged sexual “problems.” My boyfriend and I are the perfect example of this.

All I’m saying is, please gain even the slightest bit of morals. It would give the publication that employs you, as well as the community, a bit more respectability.

— Sick of you

Dear Sick:

Gosh, if we could all just have what you have–a problem-free, hat-in-the-air Doris Day marriage– this world would be a better place.

What s–t.

You have the “perfect example” of a problem-free relationship?  My bet is that you stalked your boyfriend, he panicked, gave in, and now he’s chained somewhere in the basement.  That’s what guys like you usually mean by having the “perfect” relationship.

No one is forcing you to read my column. If I see something on the menu I don’t like, I don’t order it.   I don’t complain to the waiter that he shouldn’t have it available for other people. In a world full of choice why is it that idiots like you refuse to make one?

Queens We Love: Athena Dion

ATHENA DION: THE PEOPLE’S QUEEN

Q: What was the first drag show you saw? Tell us about the experience?

A: Well, there was a weekend when I was just barely 18 and my good girlfriend decided to take me to a few gay clubs since I had never been to one before. We hit up the Coliseum in Ft. Lauderdale on a Friday and then Azucar in Miami on a Saturday, and all I wanted to do was watch the shows. Shortly after that, I went to Discotekka and saw Vegas Dion perform and completely shut down the club! I think she did Show Me Love. When she finished, she proceeded to grab the microphone and demand the crowd applause louder, and did they ever! I was completely “shook” in my skinny jeans! She terrified me and aroused me all at the same time. I think that’s when the drag bug really sunk its teeth into me. Of course, that night I also saw TP Lords perform and Gina Diangelo, and I was sold! After that I became such a big drag fan and drag junkie, I needed a fix every weekend!

Q: When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession?

A: Drag was calling my name from birth. In my youth, probably like many other young gay boys, I remember playing dress up in my mom’s clothes, fascinated by her makeup, trying it on when no one was around, kissing the mirror with lipstick, etc. It wasn’t until after the brutality of puberty and the glorious post-coming out era that I realized I could actually play dress-up in real life, too. It was after ending a relationship with a very famous local drag queen that I started to dive into drag myself. Fresh out the gate I got booked at the hottest club in Ft. Lauderdale at the time, Living Room nightclub, as the door hostess. Working that door and interacting with the club-goers came like second nature to me. I loved the attention, I loved the interaction, I loved the persona and the people’s response! I resonated very well with the community and my popularity began to rise. One thing led to another and I was starting to get more work in drag and that’s when I realized I didn’t want to give this new-found hobby up anytime soon.

Q: Who is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother — and why?

A: My drag parents and biggest mentors and idols are Vegas Dion and Erika Norell. Their creativity, originality, versatility and stage presence are like no other. They are the best in the biz in my eyes and I feel like I’m a good combo of the two of them. We share so much in common on stage and off stage and we really have an amazing family dynamic. I am very proud of them and all of their accomplishments and so thankful to have had their guidance throughout my life. But, my absolute favorite drag queen since my youth has been Adora. She is literally the only drag queen that has ever moved me to tears with a performance. Her aesthetic, her movement, her embodiment and portrayal of the characters she is imitating is always so spot on. She is a living, breathing work of timeless art and I feel she is truly the essence of Miami Beach drag culture. It’s been so surreal in the past few years to have worked with her so much, and we have actually become close friends. Yet, as close as we can be, I am still like a child in awe whenever I see her perform. She’s my fave! I adore Adora!

Q: What’s your favorite number to perform — and why?

A: I have a few faves. I love to perform anything by Pink, although Gloria Estefan has to be my favorite to perform, especially here in Miami. I started drag because of the South Beach drag scene and how fierce it was, so to perform a diva like Gloria on South Beach is like drag heaven for me. I have a great medley of all her songs that I do. I also love her newer stuff like Hotel Nacional and Wepa. Even though Cher is my favorite artist, I really don’t perform her much. My guilty drag pleasure is a good Cher impersonator!

Q: What’s the best thing that has happened to you in drag?

A: This is a tough question. Drag has taught me a lot about myself and what I value personally and in the people around me. I have met tons of celebs in the club scene, and I was even fortunate enough to have Leona Lewis sing happy birthday to me a few years ago. I also got a chance to meet and chat with Chaz Bono. Last year, some of my sisters and I ended up on national TV featured on America’s Got Talent with the opportunity to impersonate the Spice Girls. That was so cool. I mean, there are tons of memories that were awesome, but I feel like the best and most rewarding has been the power I have found though drag to change lives. Recently I worked with Jackson Memorial Hospital’s burn unit and had a “Glam Day” with some of their burn survivors. These girls had suffered from severe burn damage and the center invited me in to show some makeup tips and basically have a fun makeup day. Well, it turned into much more than that. It was an amazing experience that opened my eyes to the power I possess as a drag queen and as a person. It goes beyond the fame and the glamor when I realized I can actually make a real lasting difference in people’s lives with what I do! That realization, inspiration, and motivation has been the best thing to happen to me in drag, to date.

Q: What differentiates you from other Queens (Makes you Unique)?

A: I’m the people’s queen! The main thing that sets me apart is my personality and my love to be a hostess! I really get my thrills from being in a crowd of people, meeting everyone, talking, asking questions, taking shots together. I love to perform and be on stage but much more than that I’m a people’s queen. I love to be in the mix. It’s so bad that my close friends hate going out with me because I never stand in one place, I’m always bouncing around talking to everyone! But I think that makes for a good host, and a good party… to be social, make them feel welcome, and be the person that they want to come out and have a good time with! Thankfully it comes naturally to me.

Q: What does the future hold?

A: The future is so bright! I look back and see the footprints I have left in the sand, and I look forward and see a never-ending shore! I can honestly say I see a shift from my work from the nightlife world onto a more meaningful path. Working with the burn survivors really changed my focus, and I want to use everything I have learned and my platform to expand the visibility onto heavier issues. I feel we have so many talented people in our community and if we focus those talents in the right way, we can change the world together. There’s no better time to change the world than the present!

Three Reasons Exercise Can Make a Big Difference

Without a doubt exercise can make a massive difference in your life.

It’s the best way to burn fat, build muscle, increase flexibility, and preserve bone density. It’s also a given that working out can alleviate depression and anxiety, help you think clearer, and fortify self- esteem. Did you also know that currently there are many theories that claim that exercise can boost your immune system?
Here’s what they’re saying:

Exercise raises body temperature. Bacteria and viruses require a warm environment to thrive, but too much heat can kill them. That’s why you spike a fever (the body’s natural response) when you’re ill. An increase in body temperature caused by exercise may help you fight off infections. It appears that staying active is not only an ideal plan to combat the cold and flu season, it’s a perfect way to maintain your vim and vigor all year long!

Exercise reduces cortisol levels. Cortisol is produced in the body by stress, bad eating habits, a sedentary lifestyle, and a host of other factors. This nasty hormone has been linked to increased fat storage, fatigue, and lower testosterone levels in men. Regular exercise, even as little as 20 minutes per day has been shown to reduce cortisol and protect the body’s immune system from disease.

Exercise revs up your metabolism to fight against infections. When you move, your circulatory system moves with you. This causes infection fighting white blood cells and antibodies to pulsate through your blood stream more quickly, meaning that they can attack and defeat infections and pathogens more quickly as well! Also, the faster pace of breathing during exercise helps expel a lot of bad bacteria from your nose, throat and lungs. While you should never exercise while you’re ill (fever, chills, cough), it may prove to be your best defense against pesky bugs and infections in the long run.

Be careful not to overdo it. A moderate exercise program is more than sufficient to fortify your immune system. Regular walking, cycling, swimming, weight training or even participation in a sport can bolster your immunity against disease. Over-training just to produce a super-duper effect on your immune system can prove to be counter- productive. Such an approach could take its toll on your muscles and joints by taxing them too extremely. Adhere to a regular exercise program, challenge yourself, have fun and stay well!

Transgender Sensation Mila Jam ‘Faces’ Miami

Mila Jam will perform her new single, Faces, at Score Bar on Friday, June 9.  The song celebrates individual beauty, self-acceptance and everyone’s right to belong.
“We all wear our plastic smiles out in the world while inside, we hide our true fears and loathing and feelings of inadequacy,” says the transgender Youtube sensation-turned-recording artist from her home in New York.

“Faces is about staring boldly into that mirror and realizing that we do belong, we are enough, and someone will love us for who we really are.”
Though confident as a child and always secure in herself as a person, Mila admits she sometimes found it difficult to stare boldly into the mirror and appreciate what she saw.  “I had a hard time understanding why so many people judged me for being different. I didn’t fully understand my identity and how I would become the woman I am today.  I held on, though, and that can be hard in itself… but you must.”

She says she grew to realize she was enough and that she did belong when she met other gorgeous, gifted, empowering and hard-working trans women like her close sisters Laverne Cox, Trace Lysette and RuPaul’s Drag Race season 9 queen Peppermint, all of whom appear in the  Faces music video. Other notable names in the music video include Unbreakable’s Titus Burgess, Candis Cayne, and Transparent’s Zackary Drucker.   “I love all my ladies,” she shouts out.

Mila Jam is world-renowned for her one-of-a-kind videos and stage performances. She has performed alongside James Brown, Mark Ronson, Jody Watley, and Natasha Bedingfield. She even toured internationally with the Broadway musical, Rent. Surprisingly, her performance at Score will be Mila’s first time eve performing Miami.

“I’m so excited,” she continues.  “I love Miami, the sun and the culture…such diversity and beauty! And the beach!  I can’t wait to meet new people and make new friends.  I love all that you are, Miami, and all of your faces.”

Mila Jam performs her new song, Faces, at Score Nightclub on Friday, June 9. “Faces” is available on iTunes.  Visit www.themilajam.com

Turner Classic Movie, FilmStruck Celebrate Pride with LGBT Programming

Get your popcorn ready, get comfortable on the sofa and turn the TV to the Turner channel.

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and FilmStruck will celebrate Pride Month this June with extensive movie lineups dedicated to exploring LGBT themes in cinema.
Honoring a number of LGBT actors and artists whose talents helped them overcome the roadblocks they faced because of their orientation or gender identity, TCM will spotlight Gay Hollywood, hosted by entertainment journalist Dave Karger and author and historian William Mann, every Thursday in June, and FilmStruck will present a Gay and Lesbian Cinema showcase, hosted by film critic Alonso Duralde.

Before the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City, Hollywood’s LGBT community was forced to stay in the shadows, both on the screen and off. Depictions of same-sex love in the movies were rare and often coded, and members of the film industry were expected to draw a discreet veil over any such tendencies. The sexual revolution and the increasingly visible LGBT-rights movement began to open up new opportunities for LGBT stars and stories to be brought out of the “celluloid closet.”

TCM’s Gay Hollywood will take a look at both open and closeted stars throughout film history, including:

MGM star William Haines (Just a Gigolo, 1931) is considered the first openly gay Hollywood actor. For nearly 50 years, he shared his life with his partner, Jimmie Shields. And despite seeing his movie career end after refusing to give in to studio demands, he went on to enjoy an enormously successful career as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after interior designers

Some celebrities of the 1940s, though widely known to be gay, remained closeted during their careers, including composer Cole Porter (Night and Day, 1946) and actor Clifton Webb (The Razor’s Edge, 1946)

Several top male heartthrobs of the 1950s and ’60s, including Rock Hudson (All That Heaven Allows, 1955), Montgomery Clift (Suddenly, Last Summer, 1959) and Anthony Perkins (Psycho, 1960), were gay, although they remained closeted during all or most of their careers.

Two of America’s finest playwrights were gay and had their seminal plays adapted for the screen, including Tennessee Williams (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, 1958) and Edward Albee (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, 1966)

Actress Linda Hunt (The Year of Living Dangerously, 1982) has been open about her marriage to her partner Karen Kline.

It may have taken him a while, but Oscar® winner Joel Grey (Cabaret, 1972) eventually came out of the closet in 2015 at the age of 82

FilmStruck will explore the ways in which cultural and societal institutions have often suppressed sexual orientation over the course of history, including in the cinema. FilmStruck’s Gay and Lesbian Cinema bundle will highlight movie depictions of same-sex love with a wide variety of films from different eras, including:

Parting Glances (1986) – Bill Sherwood’s honest and open drama looks at a gay couple facing an impending separation when one goes overseas for a job assignment while his partner stays in Manhattan to care for his best friend who is dying of AIDS.

The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) – Rob Epstein won an Oscar for this powerful documentary chronicling the life and activism of murdered gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk.

Victim (1961) – Basil Dearden’s groundbreaking drama stars Dirk Bogarde as a barrister who decides to fight back after being blackmailed over his homosexuality.

Another Country (1984) – Rupert Everett stars as a gay Eton student in this drama based on the play by Julian Mitchell and inspired by the life of double agent Guy Burgess. Colin Firth, in his film debut, co-stars as a fellow student with Marxist tendencies.

The Watermelon Woman (1996) – Cheryl Dunye plays a version of herself in this witty, nimble landmark of New Queer Cinema
“Our June programming lineups will show how stars and filmmakers from Hollywood and around the globe have navigated around the demands of societal restrictions to tell LGBT stories, while also celebrating some of the stars and artists whose careers have been affected – both positively and negatively – by views of their sexual orientation and gender identity,” said Charles Tabesh, senior vice president of programming & production for TCM and FilmStruck. “We look forward to exploring their lives, work and sharing their stories with our fans.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 9 Episode 10 Recap

Nina Bonina Brown sashays away

Episode 10 opens up with Ru informing the six remaining contestants that its “Make-Over Week,” and this year they will be making over the crew of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Since Shea and Sasha won the challenge last week, they got to choose which queen was paired with which crew member. There was no shade there, as they decide to pair the queens up with the crew member they truly feel is best for them. On the runway, they have to perform with the crew member they were paired up with. In the end Sasha and Trinity rose to the top with Trinity winning the challenge. Peppermint and Alexis were safe and Nina and Shea were in the bottom two, with Nina Bonina Brown sashaying away. Here’s our exit interview with Nina:
Q: At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name?
A: I don’t remember, but it was definitely in my teen years, probably around 16. My name was chosen randomly. Nina came to me in a dream, and once I started performing someone screamed the name Bonina, so I added it to my name and then I added Brown.
Q: How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul’s Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you got chosen?
A: I applied five times, and it was bittersweet when I finally got chosen.
Q: Is there additional pressure now that RuPaul has been on for eight seasons and two all-star seasons?
A: I think so, as we were all trying our best to be nice and be on point. We have seen how the nastiness and pettiness comes across on TV.
Q: Tell us about your “RuPaul’s Drag Race” experience?
A: It was definitely an experience with lots of ups and downs (ok, more downs), but I wouldn’t change it for anything as it gave me a tremendous opportunity to put myself out there
Q: Did you start off doing regular drag and then get into the character make-up? How did that happen?

A: Yes, I did. I have always been an artist and Phoenix (RuPaul alumni) had a competition in Atlanta, and there was a Disney challenge and I did Ursula and after that I kept experimenting with characters.
Q: You are so talented, but suffered from self-doubt/depression, is that better now?
A: Not really, but I know it should be should. I have gotten a little better.
Q: Who do you want to win?
A: Trinity, because she proved to everyone that’s she is not just a pageant queen.
Q: Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.
A:. That I am a top.
Q: What’s ahead for Nina?
A: I don’t know. I am going slow, but the doors are opening and I am trying to decide which doors to walk through. I have to decide which one is going to take me to the next level.
For more information on Nina, catch her on social media at Facebook.com/ninaboninabrown or Instagram.com/nina_bonina_brown

Hot Talk: The Best Chatter on Facebook (May 27, 2017)

“It’s 2017 and they should be treated the exact same way as I’m treating everyone else… A network show where you have gay people dating? I think it’s great.”

ANDY COHEN, host of the new Love Connection on the Fox Network, referring to the inclusion of gay couples. The show is a revival of the 1980s show of the same name which was hosted by Chuck Woolery.

“He’s an embarrassment to America… I think certainly his lack of interest in continuing the process of supporting equality in all areas is something that people will look at. That obviously has an effect in America and around the world. Hate crimes against LGBT people – especially transgender people, especially against people of color – have rocketed, and of course they would because you have someone who condones those attacks through silence.”

ALAN CUMMING, Good Wife star and LGBT activist, who is bisexual, speaking to CBS about President Donald Trump prior to hosting the Village Voice Pride Awards recently in New York.

“We have waited so long…It was not easy, but after all, we won.”

VICTORIA HSU, lead counsel, speaking to BuzzFeed after she was victorious in winning a case which makes same-sex marriage legal in Taiwan.

“I am disappointed that Qantas [Airlines] has become an active promoter for same-sex marriage. I believe in marriage as a union between a man and a woman as stated in the Bible.”

MARGARET COURT, Australian tennis legend, in a letter to the airline explaining why she would no longer be flying the airline.

“If you are in the closet and also an athlete and you’re reading this, I want you to know that coming out is not as scary as you make it out to be. It is the most relieving experience you’ll ever come to term with. You finally get to be yourself and show people that the LGBT community knows how to play ball too.”

WYATT PERTUSETT, telling his coming out story to outsports.com as a top player for North Union High School in the small town of Richwood, Ohio. He will be playing next season on the Capital University football team.

World OutGames sporting events canceled amid financial turmoil

According to The Miami Herald

The bombshell revelation came via a text message from the event’s board of directors sent to Miami Beach officials Friday.

“It is with deep regret that due to financial burdens, World OutGames must cancel its sports programming and Opening and Closing Ceremony with the exception of soccer, aquatics and country western dance,” reads the text. “The Human Rights Conference and cultural programs will continue as planned. We thank everyone who has supported the effort and apologize to those who will be impacted by this difficult decision.”

Queens We Love Angelica Sanchez

Miss Florida F.I. at Large is a Pulse survivor and a queen who is blessed

Q: What was the first drag show you saw? Tell us about the experience…

A: The first drag show that I saw was actually a pageant called “Miss Liberty Vouge” in Jacksonville, Florida. I was probably about 16 or 17 years old. I was truly amazed at the costumes and the level of talent. Some friends of mine went and I was able to sneak in to watch.

Q: When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession?

A:  I saw a video of Sierra Foxxx, and it made me want to do drag. So I decided to try and do every talent show that I could. I realized from doing the talent shows that even if I didn’t win, I still made tips. That’s when I knew I could make a profession out of it. Those tips provided lunch money for the week at school.
Q: Who is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother — and why?

A: My friends and I were too young to get into the clubs, so we would go to Krystals and hang out. Everyone would go there after going to 3D and other clubs in Jacksonville. One night I saw this beautiful girl with a red gown on; it was Stasha Sanchez, who became my drag mother. My favorite entertainer besides my drag mom is Tamisha Iman.
Q: What’s your favorite number to perform and why?

A: My favorite number to perform is “Me, Myself, and I” by Beyonce.

Q: What’s the best thing that has happened to you in drag?

A: The best thing that happened to me in drag… the wonderful people I’ve met! I’ve been blessed to accomplish so much, but I couldn’t have done it without all of the wonderful friends, my drag family, and the fans I’ve met from doing drag.
Q: What differentiates you from other queens?  What makes you unique?

A: What’s different about me is the experiences I’ve been through. I was blessed to call Pulse my home, in Orlando.  Surviving the incident on June 12th makes me different because I don’t take things for granted anymore. R.I.P. to the 49. Orlando strong!
Q: What does the future hold for you?

A: I thank God to be able to have a future ahead of me. Right now, my future is making sure that I’m the best Miss Florida F.I. at Large that I can be! I’m so blessed to be a part of this great family.
You can catch Angelica performing at the Parliament House on Tuesday nights and Southern Nights. Now that she is Miss Florida F.I. at Large, you can catch her performing at Boardwalk and around South Florida regularly. She will also be performing at the Boardwalk in Fort Lauderdale from time to time.

Why We Love her

She is a multi-national title holder, but very down to earth.
She does Beyonce like no one else!
She won Miss Florida F.I. at Large on her first try.
She is a survivor of the Pulse massacre and helped some of the other entertainers escape.

An Interview with Tampa Bay Rays President Brian Auld

Brian Auld, formerly employed with Goldman Sachs, moved to the Tampa Bay area at 12 years ago to work with his high school friend, Matt Silverman on the then Devil Rays ‘turn around project’. “It sounded like too cool of an opportunity to pass up. So, here I am.” He came into the organization in 2005 having graduated from Harvard Business School with an MBA. He arrived with Andrew Freeman and Silverman. Silverman oversaw the business side of things and Auld oversaw a good chunk of the business side. When Freeman left (now president of operations with the Dodgers) Silverman became head of operations and Auld became team president. When asked how things are going as president of the Tampa Bay Rays, Auld said, “I think it’s going ok. There is a lot yet to be accomplished but I’m pretty proud of the fact that we’ve become even more focused on our mission, to energy the community to the magic of Rays baseball. And we’ve also put more resources into building an employee first community here. I always remind people that it’s not just lip service where we are. We know our staff and we do everything we can to put them above revenues, profits, customer service, fan experience, the product…everything else because we believe if we do accomplish that the rest of those things take care of themselves.”

Auld, born in Berkley, CA, grew up loving the Oakland A’s. “I grew up as a baseball fan. I spent six years in Japan where they are baseball crazy. My dad worked for Bank of America, which has offices in Japan. And, I always loved the game. I could never hit and I wasn’t particularly good at it but I could field a little bit.” His baseball heroes were Rickey Henderson, Mark McGwire, and Jose Canseco.

He loves his team now and politely says, “They’re all my favorites.” When pressed he admits Kevin Kiermaier, Chris Archer, and Evan Longoria are not only three of everybody’s favorites but they are also very near and dear to him. “They are the guys who have chosen to sign long term deals with us and are certainly leaving a huge mark with the team and choosing to be with the Rays long term because they believe in what our organization is doing.” Auld expresses his gratitude for the confidence Kiermaier, Archer, and Longoria have shown in The Rays and he adds “Obviously, we’ve shown some pretty serious confidence in them” as well.

His devotion to the Tampa Bay Rays extends well beyond the players and centers more on community. “We take very seriously our responsibilities as stewards of a community asset. I think the Tampa Bay Rays belong to both Stewart Sternberg and his partners but also to the Tampa Bay community. And we really try to run ourselves in a way that is consistent with that philosophy. We want the community to be proud of us; proud of what we do, how we do it, the way we go about it. We don’t kid ourselves that winning baseball games isn’t the number one way to do that, but in addition to putting as much energy and effort behind that endeavor we also want to do right by the community as a whole.” Auld acknowledges that winning games is the team’s greatest challenge in 2017 but feels it will be a good year for the team.” We don’t generate the revenues that would make it easy to compete year in and year out with the Red Sox, Yankees, Blue Jays – those teams all have payrolls that double and sometimes triple what we can pay our guys. And so, when you’ve got that kind of resource disadvantage it makes it hard to stay competitive. But I am really proud of what we’ve done over the time we’ve had the opportunity to run this organization. We’ve had four post season appearances which is remarkable. A lot of teams would give up a whole lot to have that kind of record. We are coming off a tough stretch the last two to three years but I think we have a team that can be very, very competitive again this year and we’re extremely proud of that.”

Auld received recognition last month at Equality Florida’s St. Petersburg Gala for his work with the community.  Last year was the TBR’s 12th year holding a Pride Night. It began primarily as a group sale event. “We just wanted to reach out to the LGBTQ community in the same way we did to the African American and Latino communities, or even a particular church or religious group, just to get people out to the park and try to build a fan base from there.” In 2008, the Rays got involved with the It Gets Better Campaign and LGBTQ issues began to resonate more. “We recognized it was important to take a pretty firm stance that [the LGBTQ community] is a group that we certainly considered equal in every way to anyone else, anywhere.

In 2015, the Tampa Bay Rays were asked to sign on to the marriage equality Supreme Court amicus brief. “We were the first team to do it. After we did it only the San Francisco Giants and New England Patriots got on board. So, we were one of only three teams and it brought us a lot of attention, I think, within the gay community. And I like to think, locally it brought us a lot of credibility with the LGBT community. It says, we are not just quietly doing these things but we are grand marshalling parades and we are waiving rainbow flags and we stand with you all in this sort of crusade for equality.” Auld was asked to be on a conference call representing the entire business community, over 600 companies that had signed the amicus brief including Google, Apple, and companies much larger than the Rays. Of the request, Auld says, “When I asked Marc Solomon (national campaign director of Freedom to Marry) about it, who was running the effort, he said, ‘Look, you represent a sports team, in the south, and for you to be onboard with this speaks more highly that someone running a tech company in Silicon Valley or at least it brings things further.’  So, it was then we started to recognize potentially that we could actually play a real role in this whole endeavor. We did that and we started to see a little bit larger crowd come out for games. We had Billy Bean come down, the only former major league baseball player who was out who works with the commissioner’s office supporting inclusion and diversity.” There were people in the Rays outfield with signs that read “We Love the TB Gays” and he thinks it’s the first time that sign had been used in a non-derogatory manor. “It was great! We loved it and it felt good and we had more people here. We did that and we had stronger efforts behind it for a couple of years. We brought together leading members of the gay community to help plan the night, to make sure we were doing it appropriately, sensitively, and those folks have urged us to do more and more. Whether its handing out flags coming up with other elements and it’s been pretty wonderful. Not to say that there hasn’t been some unfortunate backlash but it’s been smaller than any one of us would have anticipated.”

With the Pulse massacre last June, Auld says Pride Night really took off. The Rays Pride Night was on the team’s schedule and just days before the Pulse shooting took place. “Internally we got together and said we’ve got to do something amazing and we didn’t know what that meant yet. Our owner said, ‘Do it, do it big, and do it right’. We didn’t know what it meant at that time.” They wanted to make sure that they dealt with the situation appropriately and reached out to gay community leaders for input. “Forty thousand people showed up here and more wanted to come. It was an incredible show of support for the gay community. I think it demonstrated very clearly that Tampa Bay has come a lot further than some might have wondered. And that while we all have different issues and we may be among the most politically divided communities in the Country, in terms of Republican/Democrat split and the like, we aren’t going to tolerate that kind of terrorism, hate-crime, or whatever word you want to use for what took place in Orlando. It was wonderful. We gave 100% of the proceeds from that night to the victims’ fund. And when I look back on 2016 it’s the highlight of the year.”

Auld want to continue to grow the Rays Pride Night organically. “We had so many show up for it last year that we’ll build some support going forward. I can’t expect that we’ll have 40K show up again but certainly have strong allies for the event in the gay community now. Facebook is going to spread the word. We expect people to come and to be together. I always say about any one of these community nights we do. One of the greatest benefits is we get a lot of people in the same room who might not otherwise get together. You see folks working on different parts of the same causes and making connections. And that’s one of the things that I think is great about baseball, that we can help provide that type of a venue for the community. It’s a three-hour long game. You put a bunch of people who care about the same thing in a small space together and they’ll come up with ways to advance that cause.”

Auld concludes by saying, “We’ve gotten an unusual amount of recognition for what we’ve done. I’ve been humbled and honored by the number of awards we’ve sort of gotten for this. But I think the biggest reason we do it is not because we are the largest business in Tampa Bay, we’re an extremely highly visible business. I think it’s just great that people are able to look at it see, oh yeah, there’s a big business that’s taken an outward stance on this. And I don’t think we’re the only ones. I think there are plenty. I want to make sure that I try to recognize all those other businesses doing all the same things but might not have quite the platform that we do to shout about it. Because important to keep fighting this fight everywhere.”

Orlando Remembers: Tribute Event Honors Pulse Victims

An event to honor the lives of those taken during the Pulse nightclub tragedy a year ago, entitled “Orlando Love: Remembering Our Angels,” will take place at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando on June 12 at 7 p.m.
The uplifting event, which is being produced with the assistance of Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan’s office, joins other events throughout the day as part of “Orlando United Day — a Day of Love and Kindness.”

“What happened at Pulse was the darkest day in our city’s history, and we continue to grieve for the victims and fight for those who are still suffering,” said Sheehan. “This June 12, our entire LGBTQ community and our allies need to stand together and continue to show that we are a strong, united city that responds with love.”

The tribute event will feature performances from Orlando-based groups and well-known artists on the amphitheater stage. Olga Tañón, a renowned Puerto Rican Grammy award-winning pop singer who has been described as the “Queen of Merengue” will join the DanceIt Dance Studio Ballroom Dancers to perform “Hallelujah.” Central Florida native Sisaundra Lewis, a semi-finalist in season 6 of NBC’s The Voice, will sing and dedicate her song “Applause” to those who were at Pulse. The Orlando Voices United Choir reunites after their heart-stirring appearance at last year’s From Broadway With Love To Orlando benefit concert.

Rounding out the tribute are performances by the Orlando Gay Chorus, violinist Jose Luis Navarro, The Venue’s Blue Star, actress Peg O’Keef, the CFCA Choral Group, the Orlando Firefighters Pipes and Drums and the Pipes and Drums of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. The program — to be emceed by WFTV anchors Jorge Estevez and Nancy Alvarez — will include brief introductory remarks by Commissioner Sheehan as well as First Baptist Orlando Pastor Israel Martin, Orlando City Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Pulse Nightclub owner Barbara Poma.

Beyond the events taking place on stage, attendees will have the opportunity to view artwork related to Pulse at the Washington Square Plaza section of Lake Eola Park. Artists including Michael Pilato, designer of numerous murals around the city, will be available to discuss their works.

In connection with the homegrown movement “Acts of Love and Kindness” which inspires and encourages participants to take action in the community, a volunteer fair will help unite over 20 local LGBTQ+ organizations with prospective volunteers. Beginning at 5 p.m. attendees can visit the area located just north of Washington Square Plaza to learn about various opportunities and important ways to lend assistance.
Finally, the Orlando Angel Force — a group comprising 49 individuals bearing angel wings — will have a presence throughout the event. The Angel Force is organized by the GLBT Center of Central Florida and has been a symbol of hope and compassion during numerous events and gatherings throughout Orlando.

Orlando Love — Remembering Our Angels is being produced by local volunteers and is supported entirely through donations.

One Mother’s Story

By Betty Yancey

How Christine Leinonen has turned the loss of her son in the Pulse tragedy into something beautiful

On June 12th, Christine Leinonen got the news that no parent should ever have to receive. Her son, Christopher Andrew Leinonen, and his partner, Juan Ramon Guerrero, were among those killed at Pulse nightclub.  As the one-year anniversary of the horrific Pulse tragedy approaches, Christine sat down with Hotspots to talk about that night, the loss of her son and how the biggest mass shooting attack in U.S. history has changed not only “The City Beautiful” but her world.

Q: Christine, how are you coping with your loss?

A: I am coping with losing my only dear son, Christopher, by doing things that give me meaning and purpose. Of course, I grieve, lightly at times and other times with great difficulty. With the horrific nature, however, sometimes I simply have to be in a state of denial. The pain that the reality of my son’s death is potentially so severe, that to cope means to distract or busy myself. It’s hard to comprehend the level of evil it took for one person to kill and injure so many, so deliberately. But for the most part, I try to turn my son’s energy into good works. By doing that I’m turning the grief into good. I’ve been speaking out to give my son, whose voice was silenced, a voice.  I have not only been a gay-rights advocate, but an activist. Being a part of theDruProject.org has been tremendously helpful in my gay activism. ‘’ve also become a gun safety advocate. I’ve been speaking out in favor of common-sense gun protections.

Q: One year later, what is your perspective of this tragedy?
A: One year later, I am very proud of the victims, families of victims, and friends of victims, who have turned our tragedy in a mission to not only survive, but to thrive in defiance of the evil. Some are going back to school for new careers, some are becoming political, some are becoming voices with various media, some are starting non-profits, some are becoming religiously active, writing books, getting tattoos, writing songs/raps.  [There are] many different ways to heal. However, the pain is still there. The reality that my son will not see the new Disney Star Wars movie, or go to the ride at Magic Kingdom, or get married, or laugh or dance ever, ever again, is heartbreaking. During those times, I cry, or just rest and relax and feel the pain, then move forward, once that feeling passes.  I know at the end of that pain, is a rainbow, and beyond that rainbow is a pot of gold. The feelings I get when I work through the grief are pretty wonderful. I get to see how it’s very probable that there will not be 284 victims and their loved ones in sadness, but 284 victims and their loved ones full of success and a renewed vigor for life. The killer succeeded in our loss of 49 loved ones and I want to do whatever I can to insure that no one else is lost as a result of his evil.

Q: If you could ask one question to the killer of these innocent lives, including your son’s, what would it be?
A: I don’t have anything to say to the killer. I don’t think it’s even a good idea to address him in any fashion. Many of these mass shootings are a result of giving the killers notoriety. That’s what they want… attention, saying their name, becoming infamous.  Even my son’s killer mentioned the Boston Bomber when he was on the phone with the police. That makes it clear that he was seeking that same notoriety. I’ve adopted the Aurora victims’ loved ones position and I don’t address the killer in any way, shape or form. I don’t want to see any other families go through the pain of losing their loved one in a mass shooting because that future shooter was trying to emulate the Pulse shooter.

Q: How well has Orlando handled this tragedy in terms of response and support?
A: The businesses of Orlando have been the best, most generous, kindest possible. Starting with the Baldwin Funeral Home that was so protective and giving my son and his friends a respectful, safe space to show their last respects. St. Luke’s in downtown Orlando, again so beautiful and protective space for our services. The parishioners all came out to volunteer to make sure my son’s services were second-to-none.  Then, you can’t say enough about Disney, Olive Garden, Starbucks and JetBlue, just to name a few of the big companies who came out in force to donate to the victims and their families. It was awesome! Whenever people ask me about how they can give I always say, instead of giving to a charity that may or may not be legitimate, just take your grandma to Olive Garden, or buy your kids Disney toys, or go to Disney World, buy your neighbor a cup of coffee, or fly JetBlue.  Just patronize the businesses that give back during a community tragedy, get a great product and let the companies donate when needed.

Q:  There are children out there who have been abandoned by their parents–rejected and cast out–because they are LGBT. You embraced your gay child! What words would you say to parents who discover their children are gay?
A: To think there are parents in this world who don’t love their children exactly as they are is heartbreaking. The best advice I could give any parent is to love your child, period. They will grow up to be adults one day, and I can assure you, that if you live long enough, you will regret it if you did not provide your child with a safe and loving home… especially, if their personality is a little spicy, because they are gay or creative, or special, you will love them even more when they are young adults. The last couple of years of Christopher’s life I told him while I loved him as a child, and as a gay child, I grew to love him even more as an adult. Instead of the boring adult children of some of my friends, I had this vibrant, interesting, goofy, great kid. He was spicy!

Q: What has been the response to the Dru Project you have received?
A: The Dru Project (thedruproject.org) has been growing and growing and has become this beautiful tribute and legacy of a great human being. Chris was kind, inclusive, giving, caring and fun. That’s the meaning of the Dru Project. It exemplifies his spirit. We hope to set up a role model Gay-Straight Alliance that can be replicated statewide or nationwide and pass through any school board’s scrutiny. And we are giving the first $1000.00 scholarship at our Launch Party at the Abbey on June 11, 2017, from 6-midnight.  So, we will not only have a model to use for any other school wishing to start up a GSA, we will be giving scholarships twice a year to students who are either gay or straight, but are inclusive designed.  We know that high schools that have clubs like a GSA have zero teenage suicides!  Teenagers need a place to fit in as they are growing from being children to adults. And they are all growing into a new world of sexuality. The worse thing we could do is to make them feel weird. So, the solution is to accept all and let them all feel like they are not only accepted, but loved and safe.

Q:  Besides the Dru Project, can you name some good that has come out of this terrible tragedy?  Not just in Orlando but all over?
A: Lots of good has come out of this tragedy.  The gay community has activated not just to provide a safe gay area, or align with straight allies, but to demand protection. Our resistance, shown across the globe, is telling the world that we, as a people, will not go back. We are moving forward, with or without our governments. That we, the people of the world, own this planet. And we decide our rules and how we want our futures to evolve. It’s impressive to watch how active everyone has become.

Q: You have accomplished so much in this past year…speaking at the Democratic National Committee, confronting Marco Rubio at a town hall discussion, the creation of the Dru Project… Do you think your son would be proud?
A: My son would be mind-blown at everything that has happened since his death. Speaking about him at the DNC, when before he died, he remarked to a friend at a gay wedding that he wondered if his mom, who he had never seen done any public speaking, would be able to give a toast to him at his own wedding. Or for him to learn that his own selfie doodles, ending up on his shirt design with his image in the Love Is Love comic book, in the middle of super heroes!

Gay For Goldie Hawn & Amy Schumer

By Chris Azzopardi

Snatched co-stars talk longtime LGBT support, doing a gay cult film together and how ‘love knows no gender’
“We’re serious bitches too,” says Amy Schumer, nearly in tears. The comic firecracker is seated next to national gay-loved treasure Goldie Hawn, and the screen icon has just made a touching revelation: She used to comfort men dying of AIDS.

Perhaps that isn’t the kind of heartwarming reveal you’d expect during a sit-down for their action-comedy, Snatched, but as this onscreen mom-daughter duo joke about a potential gay-themed sequel (the ladies already have several queer-centric working titles; for Schumer, the joke writes itself), it’s clear nothing is off topic. They’re just happy to be here speaking to gay press, which has Schumer “very elated.”
“This will be our favorite interview of the day,” the 35-year-old raves from a hotel bungalow in Santa Monica. Beaming, Hawn shares her enthusiasm: “It will be!”

Snatched is Hawn’s first movie since 2002’s The Banger Sisters. But donning a signature frilly, shoulder-less, royal blue dress, it seems like just yesterday the 71-year-old’s frothy charm enraptured gay audiences on Laugh-In in the late ’60s, and later, in 1996’s First Wives Club and, of course,  Death Becomes Her, in 1992.

“It’s fun doing press with her,” says Schumer, as Hawn, en route, recharges at the hotel’s nearby buffet line before breezing in. “It’s also relaxing, because she’s like a mom – you’ll ask her something, and you’ll be looking for a sound bite and then we’re out of time and I’m like, ‘OK, cool. Good job.’”

Before being snatched up for their next interview, Hawn and Schumer got real about their respective gay followings, how Hawn thinks Schumer still has time to pursue a lesbian relationship and their commitment to “fight to the death” for LGBT people.

Q: Why has it been important to you both to advocate for the LGBT community, especially now, in this political climate?

A: Schumer: I can’t remember a time I didn’t. When I was in high school, people weren’t really out yet. I think it’s more now. It was a different time even then, but it was never a question. It was never a choice. It was, “Yeah, of course.”

Hawn: Being an ally for LGBT people and an ally for all people, transgender or whatever – to me, that’s a human story. I feel there are injustices in the world that I’ll stand up for, and I think that it’s important to realize that the world is filled with these kinds of issues. We’re dealing with intolerance and what’s going on with deportation and what’s happening with Mexicans and what’s happening with people who are Muslim. There are so many things, and if you can’t stand up for it, then you’re not standing up for humankind. Because that’s who we are. We all have skin and blood, and we’re all made of the same things. I have a note that I will probably needlepoint one day: “Love knows no gender.” And it doesn’t. Love is something in the heart and in the mind, so why would you chastise anyone for that? And this is something that I feel very strongly about.

Schumer: Also, we’re both people who will stand up to the death for our gay friends and gay people and what’s going on in Chechnya and the fear of what will happen in the coming years. We’ll be there to fight alongside our gay friends.

Hawn: You know what I used to do? This is interesting. When we went through the AIDS period, it was a very scary time, and I would go visit guys and I’d get in bed with them just to be there with them.

Schumer: Come on, think about that.

Hawn: Oh, I just remember.

Schumer: Aw, Goldie. And great – now we’re all crying.

Amy, on behalf of gays everywhere, thank you for being instrumental in bringing Goldie back to the big screen.
Hawn: Awwww!

Schumer: You’re welcome!

Hawn: Oh my god, so sweet.

You were missed, Goldie.

Schumer: Dude, yeah. I completely agree, and I feel the same way. I just stayed on her, and we did it together.

Hawn: You were the one, I gotta tell you. It really was Amy.

Q: When in your career did you two first know you had a big gay following?

Hawn: Gosh, honey, this is a long time ago. I think when I first came on – it started then. The early days. There wasn’t a moment in my career, never a moment. I was a dancer, and I grew up and that’s who I was. There was no issue. I mean, I had a tremendous amount of gay friends, so my whole life was basically like that while dancing. So, I never noticed who was gay or who was straight. For me, it was like that.

Now, later on, you started seeing more, maybe excitement, around it. But I’ll tell you, I don’t pay much attention. You can’t pay too much attention to those things and live a full life. It can’t be just about that. So, I don’t pay a lot of attention to things. I have a little bit of blinders on.

Schumer: I’ve been on the road for 15 years. What I would do after shows is go dance at gay bars, and I started noticing, because even the worst towns have a fun gay bar, people being like, “We were at the show.” I remember it was a realization for me going on the road. And I’ve had a bunch of gay couples say, “I wanna propose at your show,” and I get really psyched! Ha! You’re like, “Yes!” Not because, “Oh, good, that’s a market”; it’s like, that’s who you want to love you. I feel really grateful and lucky, and the love is mutual.

Hawn: A really good friend of mine, who is gay, married her girlfriend and they wanted to get married in my house. All our friends were there, and it was the most beautiful thing. It was just so emotional, and (my son) Oliver, who is 40 now – at that time he was about 20-something – basically went, “Mom, I want a gay marriage!” Ha! I was like, “I know! It’s so beautiful.”

Schumer: I’m always walking around in every town I’m in and I’ll find a park, and there are always people having their engagement pictures. I’m like, “Can I be in this photo?” I want in on the fun!

Q: As someone who used to dance in gay bars, were your dance moves in Snatched gay-inspired? And how about Goldie’s?

Schumer: Oh, definitely. Also, just to watch Goldie dance is one of the great joys of my life. Honestly, to see that live.

Hawn: Ha!

Q: Goldie, with your dance scenes in this movie, were you having flashbacks to your iconic dancing in First Wives Club at that lesbian bar?

Hawn: Oh, right! I danced in a lot of movies! It’s weird but it happened and it’s good.

Schumer: To have you not dance in a movie is a crime.

Both of you have experience in a lesbian bar. Goldie in First Wives Club, and Amy, you were a bartender at one before your comedy career took off. Is this maybe a potential jumping-off point for a second movie starring both of you?

Schumer: There’s our sequel: The Real Snatched.

Hawn: Ha! Snatched Unhinged! Snatched Uncensored!

Schumer: And Uncut!

Q: How do you think this film may resonate with gay people and the relationships they do or don’t have with their parents?

Schumer: That’s a good question.

Hawn: Very good question.

Schumer: I definitely haven’t thought about how different sort of lifestyles could experience it because it does feel pretty universal, but I get it. I think it really will bring together people who have had a struggle with a parent – that idea of, we’re both doing the best we can.
As kids, you’re just so, “Oh, my mom just loves me.” We all take our parents for granted, and the goal is to be able to accept that they just love the shit out of me and did the best they could. And maybe it wasn’t enough, but (it’s important) to find peace for yourself in that and to get rid of some of the anger. I hope this movie brings kids and parents together – I think it will.

Hawn: The other thing you’re dealing with is a very strong rejection and it is arguably very, very important to find forgiveness. This movie may or may not touch a little on that, but we’re talking about a relationship between a mother and a daughter. It’s kind of like a fraught relationship, and we do get into it. I’d like the idea that perhaps whether you’re gay or not that you’re able to go in and say, “Maybe I should call my dad, maybe I’m gonna call my mom.”

One of the realities is that if you don’t make peace, they’re gonna die one day, and it’s really important to know that, because moms and dads don’t last forever. If you’ve got unfinished business, we need to face that, and that’s not easy. And a lot of parents are stoic and won’t give, and if they don’t give it’s a very sad story, because you know why? Every child wants to love their mother and their father. Love is the most important thing, and when they feel rejected and unloved that hole can never be filled by anyone else.

Q: Amy, in the movie, you tell your brother that he’s “so gay for mom.”

Schumer: I wondered what the experience would be of that line.

Q: Who are you gay for in your lives?

Schumer: I’m gay for so many people that I think I may be just gay.

Hawn: Ha!

Schumer: I love my girlfriends so much that I’ve kissed girls – but I’ve never had, like, a lesbian experience. Not yet. But I’m sure. The life is young.

Hawn: I was gonna say: There’s a lot of time!

Schumer: There’s time left. But you know how you just think your friends are so beautiful, and (with) my really good girlfriends, over the years I’ve had confusing feelings because I just love them so much. I just think they’re so beautiful, so I’m gay for my friends.

Hawn: My best girlfriend is gay… and my other girlfriend probably could’ve been! She wore man shoes all the time, and I was always the one in little twinkle shoes. She’d go out with me and I’d say, “Now are you gonna wear your suit and your man shoes because we’re quite a couple!” Ha! But my best girlfriend is gay, and this is the girl I laugh with like crazy. And my nephew!

Q: Naturally, Goldie, everyone around you is gay, and with a résumé that includes First Wives Club and  Death Becomes Her, I’d expect nothing less. Which of those films do you think earned you the most gay cred?

Hawn: That’s really interesting. Probably First Wives Club. But Death Becomes Her was pretty gay.

Q: Did you know Death Becomes Her would eventually become a gay cult film?

Hawn: Not at all! I just thought that it was gonna be a cult film forever because it’s all about staying alive and staying young forever, and (director) Bob Zemeckis was way ahead of his time. So, for me, it was just a general commentary on where we’re going, because everyone wants to stay young and no one wants to get old and what is the elixir and what can I drink?

Q: When did you realize that it was adored by gay audiences?

Hawn: I never thought of it! But I love that.

Schumer: I hope this becomes a gay cult movie.

Hawn: That would be awesome!

I mean, basically anything that Goldie touches, right?

Hawn: Well, my god, that’s quite a compliment.

Schumer: We should all be so lucky!

Stonewall Pride 2017: Five Questions with Jeff Sterling

Jeff Sterling is the managing partner of Sterling Accounting and Sterling Realty. A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Jeff earned a degree at Indiana University in Fort Wayne.

An active member of the Wilton Manors LGBT community for the past eight years, Jeff serves as president of each non-profit organization that he participates in: the Wilton Manors Entertainment Group Inc., Wilton Manors Development Alliance Inc., Taste of the Island Inc., and Wilton Manors Arts & Entertainment Expo.

The Wilton Manors Entertainment Group Inc (WMEG), the organization producing Fort Lauderdale’s Stonewall Pride again this year, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that is a joint effort between the City of Wilton Manors and the Wilton Manors Development Alliance Inc. WMEG provides resources, guidance and continuity for city sponsored cultural, social and educational events with all funds dedication to its mission to benefit the community of Wilton Manors.

Q: What can we expect from Stonewall Pride 2017?
A: This year’s Stonewall will represent the third year we have organized the event and the third year in over a decade of the event will grow and be financially solvent. The event starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 17 and the setup will be like last year’s event with at least seven large 100 by 40 foot canopies where over 100 vendors will be showcasing their products and services to our community. This year we’ve added lights and large fans to help with the heat. There will be a diverse arrangement of entertainment on at least four stages along Wilton Drive. In addition, each of our 16 bars on the Drive will be offering their own entertainment to add to the mix. We are very lucky in our event that we have so many bars and restaurants along the route that add to the options available to everyone. The parade will be at 4 p.m. this year. We are expecting well over 100 participants this year and the parade will probably last one and a half to two hours. The parade starts on the south end of Drive by Dairy Queen and continues north to Five Points.3

Q: Since the Pulse nightclub tragedy in Orlando last year, security at events like these has heightened. What are the challenges, and costs, to secure an LGBT event of this magnitude?
A:  The tragedy at Pulse and the ongoing threats LGBT events face around the nation and world has made security a top issue. This year, we have had to delay some expansion plans as we struggle to raise the additional money to cover security. Our security costs that we are responsible for have doubled to over $40,000 and security is also a concern as we look at where items are placed, how we control access and what can be allowed to happen at the event. We will have police from numerous jurisdictions along with support from several federal police agencies on site securing the area, all under the leadership of our Wilton Manors Police Chief. As part of this, the City of Wilton Manors has stepped up and assisted in some of the costs and changes we face. Through city support we have changed all our entrances to heavy water barricades and have placed additional barricades throughout the event to help stop drive-throughs from happening. The City of Wilton Manors police department has done a great job of making sure we have a good, safe time. In addition, we have set up a GoFundMe page online to help diffuse the high cost of security.

Q: The anti-LGBT demeanor of the Trump administration has led to a new level of LGBT activism, including scheduled “Equality Rally” events at more than three dozen cities across the nation (and worldwide) on
June 11. Are you expecting, or hoping for, larger crowds than usual?
A:  It is a rough time for our nation as we face constant attacks against marginalized groups. We’ve seen an increase in attendance and interest in last year’s event due to solidarity from the Orlando Pulse nightclub tragedy. We anticipate that this year we will again see that support and increased attendance, as those who thought our fight was done or moving forward are now seeing the need to fight again to keep what we have already gained, and not lose any more ground in our struggle for full equality. We are part of the planning group of the local Equality Rally for Unity & Pride that will be held on June 11, starting at 4 p.m., at Ft Lauderdale’s Huizenga Park, 939 Las Olas Blvd. We consider it our kick-off event for Stonewall Week.  We encourage everyone to attend to show our solidarity and send a message to local and national politicians that we will not quietly allow our rights  and the rights of other marginalized groups – to be taken away.

Q: How can people participate in Stonewall Pride 2017 if they would like to volunteer, enter the float parade or purchase a booth, for example?
A:  We are still open for sponsors, vendors, parade entries, volunteers and financial support.   If someone wants to be part of this event they can go to wiltonmanorsstonewall.com and click on the appropriate link.  They can also reach out to us at 754-200-2979 or info@wmeg.org.

Q: What is your hope for Stonewall Pride 2017?
A:  This year we have several goals as we are looking forward.  One is an increased attendance as we take an event of 30,000 and over the next several years move it to 50,000+. The second is, with the help of the city, to successfully measure the economic impact of the event to meet all the requirements for several grants. We are looking to grow the event by bringing back a huge headliner to showcase and expand the offerings of the event to meet our attendance goals. Finally, and most important of all, everyone has a fun and safe time where they feel free to express who they are and, hopefully, we have encouraged everyone to become more involved in our struggle for equality.

Creep of The Week: Charmaine Yoest

By D’Anne Witkowski

President Trump’s goal to fill cabinet positions only with people who are diametrically opposed to what said cabinet is supposed to do continues. This time he’s tapped Charmaine Yoest to be assistant secretary of public affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services.

Yoest is an anti-abortion extremist who, in addition to her wild ideas about a woman’s right to choose what happens to her own body, has some pretty crazy views on things like sex and sexuality (funny how being anti-choice and anti-LGBTQ so often go together).
Before I get too far ahead of myself, however, I should explain what HHS is and does. Or, rather, I’ll let HHS explain in words from its own website: “The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services protects the health of all Americans and provides essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.”

It would be more accurate to replace the word “protects” with “formerly protected” because they certainly do not care about that now.
It’s bad enough that Tom “gay marriage is sad marriage” Price is the head of HHS. He’s also anti-choice and has a great big boner over the potential destruction of the Affordable Care Act which would literally cause people, primarily the poor and the sick, to lose their insurance, therefore losing their access to health care, and therefore dying. HHS has essentially abandoned the “health” and the “human” parts of its name.
But now Trump has plucked Yoest from the cesspool of misinformation and bigotry that is the Family Research Council to spread the gospel of “contraception doesn’t work” and “breast cancer is caused by abortions” in the federal government.

In 2006 she appeared on a Fox News segment about pending legislation in New York City to allow transgender men and women to change their birth certificates. She was against it, saying that birth certificates represent “what actually happened in real life,” essentially dismissing transgender people as living in some kind of fantasy world. She also accused transgender people of trying to “redefine what normal is” and said she didn’t want to share a restroom with trans women.
Her husband, Jack, also seems delightful. In a blog post about that Fox appearance he lamented the fact that his wife was “forced into debating a trany of some stripe.” Note that tranny is not only pejorative, but he spelled it wrong.

In 2007 she debated Freedom to Marry’s Evan Wolfson on MSNBC and sprouted bullshit claims that research showed that children were harmed when raised by same-sex couples. She made the same claim ten years earlier on CNN and in 2006 on NPR.
Her backwards thinking is especially dangerous when it comes to HIV/AIDS prevention. She once said that advising people to wear condoms for protection was “shockingly irresponsible” and “absolutely insane” because condoms don’t have a 100% success rate. She especially didn’t want teenagers to use condoms. “Where are we going to go when teens get this disease, using a condom, and they say, you know, ‘But my government told me that I was going to be safe’?”

The obvious answer is that we need comprehensive sex education so that sexually active teens learn about the actual risks involved with condoms and other types of contraception. But, of course, Yoest is against that, too.
If knowledge is power, then the Trump Administration is the weakest in history. Yoest will fit right in.

GFLGLCC Quarterly Networking Luncheon

Community Comes Together for Equality Rally for Unity & Pride

Leaders of several South Florida organizations, along with Fort Lauderdale Vice Mayor Dean Trantalis, have formed a task force to plan The Equality Rally For Unity & Pride – Fort Lauderdale in solidarity with the national “Equality March for Unity & Pride” taking place in Washington, DC. It will include a remembrance of the June 12th 2016 Pulse Nightclub massacre and the victims killed there. The South Florida event will take place on Sunday, June 11th from 4 until 6 pm at Huizenga Plaza, One East Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale.

Organizers of The Equality Rally for Unity & Pride initially convened to plan a memorial event for the one-year mark of the Pulse nightclub tragedy in Orlando last year, but it grew to include the themes of inclusivity, diversity, pride and equality. Organizers stress that this is a non-partisan event, focusing not on what we oppose, but standing up for the values we share.

“The purpose is to have a peaceful and effective way for people to unite, express and celebrate the different intertwining causes and cultures here in South Florida,” said Anthony Cedeño, a member of the task force.

Community organizers and activists representing social justice and cultural organizations, including LGBTQ issues have come together from throughout Broward County to produce the rally. Keeping the sentiment of the rally, the task force is inviting representatives from organizations, agencies, unions and individuals to widen the scope of communities gathered at the Equality Rally for Unity and Pride.

The Equality Rally for Unity and Pride will include remarks by community leaders, as well as musical performances. The following are confirmed to participate:  US Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz; State Rep. Bobby DuBose; Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Dean Trantalis; Transgender Rights Advocate Jeanette Jennings, mother of Jazz Jennings; Pulse survivor Isaiah Henderson; American Muslim activist, Ghazala Salam; and a representative from ACLU – Florida.

Michaela Paige from The Voice and the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida and DJ Alex Ferbeyre are donating their time and talents to ensure a varied and enjoyable event.

“People are energized and becoming more involved than ever before,” said Row Iliescu, South Florida development director for Equality Florida, “but often working in isolation from other groups.  We expect that by bringing the community together, people will see the extent to which we are allied, learn how much work is being done to promote our common values, and learn how to become even more engaged,” she added.

In order to defray costs, and ensure a safe and fun event, a GoFundMe page has been set up and donations are welcomed at https://www.gofundme.com/EqualityRallyFTL. Additional information and updates on the next community meeting are available on the Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/events/116491132221022/

For further information, contact Anthony Cedeno at acedeno@our-fund.org, or Row Iliescu at row@eqfl.org.

What’s Hot South Florida May 25 – May 29

And the winner of the Miss Unite 2017 pageant is… Kalah Mendoza!

The new queen took the title last Monday when Abey Alfasi held his second annual Miss Unite F.I. Pageant at the world-famous Boardwalk in Fort Lauderdale. Five contestants competed in the pageant, which is the official preliminary to Miss Florida F.I. 2017.

The second runner-up was Kataleya Davenport, while the first runner-up title went to April Chanel.

All three finalists received sponsorships allowing them to move on to the Miss Florida F.I. Pageant to compete on the national stage. Congrats to Abey and his entire staff on a fabulous pageant!
On Tuesday, I started my night at Extreme Action Park in Oakland Park in their Classic Car Exhibit where the GFLGLCC hosted their monthly mixer. For those of you who haven’t been yet, this is such a fun place! Check it out!
Afterwards, I went over to Rumors for their monthly charity bingo, which this month benefited the Animal Rescue Fund. As usual, the hostess was the lovely Amanda Austin and her special guest was Alandra Matthews.

On Wednesday night, the night started out at a beautiful home on Las Olas as Equality Florida held their Broward Connections Mixer and talked about the latest political actions going on in Tallahassee. Afterwards, I headed down to Miami as the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force held their 2017 Gala Kick Off Party at AC Hotels on the beach. While there I got to see my brother from another mother (he is really my sista, but he hates when I say that), Josue Santiago, who is the chair of the 2017 Gala.
On Thursday, SAVE! held a Broward County Champions of Equality Recruitment event at Mind Your Manors on Wilton Drive. Tony Lima, executive director, created this event to get more Broward folks involved in their Champions of Equality Gala. As someone who has been many times, I highly encourage it. Afterwards, I headed over to Matty’s Wilton Park to see the one and only Lady Bunny perform, like only she can. As usual, she delighted the crowd and you fully understand why she has lasted in this business for over 30 years!
On Friday evening, Southern Nights Fort Lauderdale hosted a NeighBEARhood Takeover Party with a Wet Underwear Contest where winners and placers got passes to One Magical Weekend events. The winner was Hotspots’ own cover model (three weeks ago) and star of Happy Endings at the Empire Stage, Matthew Pappadia.
On Saturday evening we started the night at Georgie’s Alibi/Monkey Bar for their monthly Beast, Fetish & Gear Party. This month, they featured DJ Erich Ensastigue of Pure Jaus Records who rocked the house. Beast is always the third Saturday of the month, so stay tuned for next month’s event!
Afterwards, the gang and I went over to The Manor to celebrate the 19th anniversary of Noche Latina Florida, at Noche Latina Saturdays. The anniversary, whose theme was Noche Erotica, was packed in the dance room and the patio and featured the bartenders in fetish gear, sexy Go-Go Papis in outfits I dream about, fabulous drag performances (including two from the current reigning Miss Noche Latina, Angie Ovahness, that had the crowds screaming), an adult video star performance, and sensational music by resident DJ Larry Larr. Congrats to the entire staff of Noche Latina Florida. Hotspots wishes them many more years of success.

On Sunday, I headed to Miami for the annual Aqua Girl Boy Party. This year they partnered with Impulse Group to present Evolution Party at the National Hotel, which featured a trifecta of DJ Talent (AJ Reddy, Citizen Jane and Dan Slater).
