Fine Tune That Summer Body

Summertime is rapidly approaching in South Florida. Whether you intend to stay put and enjoy our beaches and clubs — and lighter traffic! — or plan to get away to a cooler destination, don’t let your health and fitness goals slide.

This is a perfect time to rev up your current exercise program, implement some changes, or simply put some extra time in on those problem areas that could use a little work. Here’s a summer checklist, head to toe, with my best advice and exercises!

  1. Brain The rest of your body degenerates much faster with age than the brain, but gray matter needs exercise too. To keep your mind sharp, read a book at the pool or beach, work crossword puzzles, join a bridge group, de-stress with yoga or meditation, or just listen to some quality tunes.
  1. Heart According to the CDC, heart disease kills one in every four men — and half of the men who die suddenly of coronary heart disease have no previous symptoms. Don’t become a statistic; instead, get up and stay active. Anything cardio will do, whether you do it inside a gym (spinning, Zumba, cross fit, martial arts, elliptical machine, etc.) or outside (swimming, biking, jogging, power walking, etc.).
  1. Chest The pectorals are the largest muscle group of your upper anterior body. Keep your pecs strong and sexy! Grab a workout buddy to help you change weights quickly, and try some compound sets, forced reps, and drop-sets so that you’ll really feel the burn on bench presses, incline presses, incline dumbbell flies, and cable crossovers.
  1. Abdominals The key to achieving a sexy six-pack is adhering to a low-fat, carb-controlled nutritional plan. Work out your abs two to three times per week. Crunches and bent-knee leg raises are your best bet for building these essential core muscles.
  1. Arms Bulging biceps are always eye catching, but don’t forget their sisters. Seventy-five percent of the muscle in the average upper arm is triceps. So, while tris don’t require three times the effort you put into building your biceps, you’d be foolish to neglect them. Front cable push downs, close-grip push-ups, dumbbell kick-backs, and parallel-bar dips are my recommended exercises for building triceps.
  1. Butt No matter where you strut your stuff, all eyes will follow you if you’ve got a great butt. Your gluteals (the muscles that make up your ass) are essential for a wide variety of activities activities — running, walking, climbing stairs, getting up out of a chair (and I bet you can think of at least one or two more) — so they need to be worked. Walking lunges, squats, leg presses, and weight-free jump squats will build a superior butt as well as thighs and calves.
  1. Knees Sitting behind a desk all day or travelling in a car for hours can cause dull, aching pain in your knees because the lack of motion can prevent your joints from being sufficiently lubricated. Do stretches for your knees regularly: Sit back in a chair with feet flat on the floor. Slowly lift your feet upward — extending your legs without locking out your knees at the top — then flex your thighs and hold for 20 seconds. Do this several times each day and between sets when working out.

Blogger Robert Oscar Lopez is a Self-Loathing Gay

Hey gentlemen, if you’re a Gay and want to become a Heterosexual, you can do it today in just 10 easy steps!

At least that’s what blogger Robert Oscar Lopez wants you to believe. Lopez was raised by lesbians, a situation he apparently found so traumatic that he’s become the expert on ex-gaying.

On barbwire.com, the website of notorious homophobe Matt Barber, Lopez has posted, “Rebuking the Big Lie: Ten Tips for Ex-Gay Happiness.”

Now, you may be wondering: “Hey, can I really be ex-gay in just 10 steps?”

Well, no. Lopez has a lot of “Ten Tips” blog posts on his website for the ex-gay curious. So, once you add “Ten Dating Suggestions for Ex-Gay Men in Pursuit of Women” and “Ten Things to Love About Heterosexuality” — not to mention “The Ex-Gay’s Strategy on Women: Many Top Tens In One” — we’re talking about scores and scores of steps.

As you might’ve guessed, Lopez has some really messed up ideas about this whole gay thing.

First, he seems to think men (and his focus is on gay men here; sorry, lesbians!) become gay after being tricked into it.

“[G]ay activists can flood you with stimuli and arousal techniques to make you curious or interested in homosexuality,” Lopez writes. “Once you try it or find yourself thinking about it, cultural messages and cues all around you mess with your head and convince you that this is who you are, you have to make yourself sexually available to other guys.”

Now, this might make some sense — if Lopez were describing heterosexuality. Since the majority of people are heterosexual, we are surrounded by images of heteronormativity. In fact, if you want to get “flooded” with gay “stimuli and arousal techniques,” you pretty much have to seek it out. Otherwise, that flood is more like an occasional trickle (See: Will & Grace, Ellen, the gays on Modern Family, et al.).

He then writes, “I don’t have much more time before…” — and I’m thinking, ‘Oh no, is he going to die?!’ — but he continues, “before the law makes it illegal for me to share the ten tips I will share in this blog.”

There’s no law against sharing stupid lies on the internet, or Donald Trump would be in prison, where he belongs.

Lopez warns that leaving gay life is hard. “There are certain perks about being gay that you are going to miss,” he writes. “For instance, if you identify as gay, people pity you and give you less responsibility for being a jerk.”

Oh man, wait until he hears about Milo Yiannopoulos.

Lopez continues, “The world feels small and cozy because everywhere you go, you can go to the gay bar and have instant community.”

Okay, wait a minute. There are gay bars everywhere? That is news to me and will likely be news to millions of gay people around the world who live near no gay bars. But I guess Lopez sees every bar as a Homosexual Cheers: (sing it with me, now) “where everybody knows you’re gay.”

“Once you commit to not being gay anymore, things will get hard,” he writes. “In the gay world, you may have competed from time to time for the attention of men with nice physiques; now, you will be fighting against men with even more well-developed physiques, trying to achieve victory over them in order to win for yourself a coveted prize: a virtuous and desirable wife.”

Aaaaaand… f*ck off. Women are not prizes. Women are human beings who have value and worth outside of whether or not they are somebody’s wife.

“Soon you will see how much harder life is for straight guys,” laments Lopez.

And he’s probably right that life is harder for him now that he’s “straight.” Self-hatred and denial are a bitch. But harder for straight guys, in general? Nah. They’ve been riding roughshod over all of us and continue to do so.

It’s my hope that Lopez will one day write a “Top Ten Reasons Not to Hate Your Gay Self.” But until then, I wonder if he’ll include “riding roughshod” on his “Top Ten Gay Stimuli and Arousal Techniques.”

St. Pete Pride Announces New Executive Director

Following an extensive nation-wide search, where over 60 résumés were considered, Luke Blankenship has been named as the Executive Director of St Pete Pride, Inc.

A Board appointed Hiring Committee started the process in January with an open application period. Candidates meeting the criteria were invited to submit a quality video introducing themselves and answering predefined questions. The Hiring Committee, consisting of past and current board members, selected applicants to advance onto a community panel interview. This panel included pride grand marshals, members of other prides, and organizational leaders from around the Tampa Bay region. The community members along with the Hiring Committee, representing a diverse group of race, gender, and sexual identity, presented the St Pete Pride Board of Directors with three candidates to interview and make the final decision.

“This was one of the most important decisions the Organization has made in a while. We wanted to ensure we exhausted all avenues and resources to guarantee we were selecting the best candidate,” said Scion Crowder, Board President.

Blankenship succeeded Eric Skains as Interim Executive Director, during that period he increased corporate sponsorships by 57% over 2017 and strengthened St Pete Pride’s community relationships. As Executive Director, Luke plans to expand education, outreach, and the community grants programs.

Blankenship brings a youthful voice and perspective to St Pete Pride. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from the University of South Florida. During his undergraduate work he was President of the USF PRIDE Alliance, the third largest student led organization.

Blankenship had this to say, “We have never been in a better position as an organization. St Pete Pride hosts staple events each year because of the support of its fantastic board members, dedicated volunteers and elite community backing. We celebrate the diversity and inclusion of all LGBTQ people and their allies. I can’t wait to for June to be upon us so we can once again gather together and unify to march for the advancement of the LGBTQ community and have one heck of a time doing it.”
