Friday Nights at Rumors with Daisy Deadpetals

Hollywood Inside & Out

“I remember going for this one dude…who I basically roughed up quite a bit. He had make-up on him and everything. He came backstage. He was a good sport about it. A couple comes in afterwards and goes, ‘Do you know who that was? That’s our favorite gay porn star.’ So this guy was putting on airs. He’s clearly seen more than I ever have.” – Darren Criss tells Conan O’Brien about making out with a gay porn star during a performance of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” on Broadway. Which begs the question – which one? I’m betting it’s one of Michael Lucas’ boys – or Lucas himself!

If you’re anything like me (and I believe at least some of you are), you can never have enough Tennessee Williams. Recently I dashed back to Boston to see “Night of the Iguana” with Elizabeth Ashley, Amanda Plummer and James Earl Jones. Last week, it was a play about Tennessee Williams at the Pasadena Playhouse starring Al Pacino, Garrett Clayton and Judith Light. This new play was billed as a “development production”, but it sure seemed pretty polished, from the star-laden cast to the swanky set to the ticket prices. Mind you, I’m not complaining – the rare chance to see Al Pacino at work is worth every penny.

The play is a fascinating character study of the final years of Williams’ life told through the eyes of one of his last beaus, playwright Dotson Rader. Onstage Rader was portrayed by Miles Gaston Villanueva, and if his name is not as familiar as his colleagues’, he was no less talented (or, for that matter, hunky). Garrett Clayton has been on quite a roll. He starred in “King Cobra” (based on gay porn pup Brent Corrigan), he was a lead in “Hairspray: Live”, and now he’s holding his own opposite Al Pacino. That he’s holding his own clad in some skimpy undies only gilds the lily. I must note the breathtaking Andrew Dits, who makes the most of one brief scene. Judith Light, who never disappoints, tackles a character clearly based on the trustee of Williams’ legacy, Lady Maria St. Just – who has been described as neither a lady, nor a saint, nor just! Light is one of those rare stage creatures who stalks rather than walks, who intones rather than recites, who becomes rather than acts. She is never less than riveting.

It would all be for naught without a galvanizing presence at the center, and Pacino (or “Mr. P” as Light calls him) is certainly that. In a masterful performance that could easily become a caricature, he etches a painfully nuanced portrait of an artist in decline. He even captures Williams’ almost musical vocal cadence. The play has some rough edges, but it’s a tantalizing morsel of things to come. Should anyone want my notes, all they have to do is ask. For once, I refrained from spouting my unsolicited opinions backstage.

In one weekend, I saw more Busch than I did in my 30s! The divine Charles Busch was touring California with two very different cabaret shows and, as a completist, I had to see both. “The Lady at the Mike” is his loving tribute to leading ladies he both worked with and admired. The material runs the gamut – from Elaine Stritch to Joan Rivers, from Helen Morgan to Julie Wilson. Like all great artists, he makes the material his own without ever imitating. “That Girl/That Boy” begins with Dolores Gray’s “Thanks A Lot, But No Thanks” and doesn’t let up until Lucille Ball’s “Hey Look Me Over”. His “Surabaya Johnny” was one of the more persuasive I’ve heard – more Lemper than Lenya – and makes a real argument for a full Weill/Brecht show. The audiences ate him up at Costa Mesa’s Segerstrom Center, and there was near-pandemonium at Rockwell Table & Stage in Los Angeles. Nothing turns me on more than talent, and Busch has that in abundance. Should you be so fortunate to get to see him, go!

On March 9, Oklahoma Senator Ralph Shortey was found in a motel room with an underaged male. Yawn – another married politician found sleeping with a boy. But this Republican was Trump’s campaign chair in Oklahoma! The details may make the situation worse for him, but I find them quite amusing. Police responded to a “check welfare” call from someone who saw the senator and youth enter a Super 8 motel – oh, the humanity. When the cops knocked on the door, Shortey said he was alone and refused to let them in. Once they threatened to enter with a pass key, he opened the door and police found him with a 17-year-old boy, who claimed to have known the senator for a year. “I used to sell weed to him,” the lad said.

Uncovered texts show the tyke asking Shortey if he could help him make some money for spring break. The senator said, “I don’t really have any legitimate things I need help with right now. Would you be interested in ‘sexual’ stuff?” The boy’s dad says that his son “has a history of soliciting himself on Craigslist for sexual conduct.” So I guess he’s into “sexual stuff”. And yet Shortey wasn’t arrested – at least not for a week. He was eventually charged with three felonies – engaging in child prostitution, transporting a minor for prostitution, and engaging in prostitution within 1,000 feet of a church! Call me old fashioned, but I think we can drop that last charge if it’s a Catholic church! Upon his arrest, the State Senate passed a resolution stripping Shortey’s name from all legislation and barring him from using his office or parking spot. No – not the parking spot!!!

When I can almost see Garrett Clayton’s “busch”, it’s definitely time to end yet another column. Remind me to tell you all about meeting Pacino – it’s quite a story. You can read loads of other stories on www.BillyMasters.com – the site which is into all kinds of “sexual stuff”. Send your questions along to Billy@BillyMasters.com and I promise to get back to you before the GOP asks Super 8 for a corporate rate! Until next time, remember, one man’s filth is another man’s bible.

The Frivolist Five Gaycations With A Purpose to Plan This Year

By Mikey Rox
I’ve never been interested in an all-gay getaway. The idea of making the annual 4th of July pilgrimage to Fire Island, New York, or boarding an Atlantis cruise, the only escape from which is to jump overboard (which has happened), just doesn’t appeal to me. My lack of interest in spending days on end with thousands of drunk, oversexed gay folk, however, doesn’t mean I can’t have a memorable gaycay. If you’re in the same boat (or dangling from its side), here are a few getaway ideas with an LGBT agenda to plan this year.

AIDS/LifeCycle

If the seven-day, 550.3-mile bike ride down the coast of California, beginning in San Francisco and ending in Los Angeles, is too daunting of a task, you still can participate in the annual AIDS/LifeCycle event to raise funds and awareness in the fight against HIV/AIDS. For about $100, the organization will set you up with everything you need to volunteer along the route, including food and lodging. Over the course of the week, you’ll assist the 2,500-plus cyclists and more than 500 roadies who pull off this incredible feat of endurance and determination by providing hydration to riders, serving lunches, packing the trucks and picking up trash; dirty job, sure, but somebody’s got to do it. Fair tradeoff, considering that you’ll enjoy priceless views of a large swath of the West Coast for the cost of a single Bennie. For more information visit, aidslifeycle.org.

Gay Wine Weekend

LGBT oenophiles can one-up each other with their knowledge of delicious vintages – or just kick back and get lit – at Gay Wine Weekend in Sonoma County, California, July 14 to 16. The three-day grape escape features tasting excursions, champagne brunches, wine auctions and pool parties, and kicks off with a VIP welcome reception and winemaker dinner. Before heading home, venture off the beaten path to discover some of the 425 wineries that call the region home. Hosted by Out in the Vineyard, GWW benefits Face to Face, Sonoma County AIDS Network. Cop your tix at outinthevineyard.com.

MiFo LGBT Film Festival

For the past 19 years, the former Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival – rebranded as MiFo, which now includes the former Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festival – has committed itself to entertaining and educating the public through international and culturally diverse films, video and other media that provides should-be-required glimpses into the LGBT experience. The Miami edition, running from April 21 to 30, offers a robust schedule of programs, including regular screenings, parties, a spotlight on female filmmakers and culinary/cinema infusions. Can’t make it to Magic City this spring? Hit up the Fort Lauderdale edition from Oct. 7 to 16. Fill your calendar at mifofilm.com.

HONfest

You’ll feel like an extra on the set of a John Waters film at the 23rd HONfest (June 10 and 11), a one-of-a-kind wink-and-nod to the area’s “Hon” culture, which began humbly as a regional term of endearment in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore City in the 1950s and ’60s. Sky-high beehives, cat-eye glasses and over-the-top, time-capsuled costumes that rival any drag queen’s getup keep this hyper-local gala of gaudiness a time-honored tradition in a town known more for its steamed crabs than its commitment to fashion. Warp over to honfest.net to begin your transformation.

International Gay Polo Tournament

Polo-playing Prince Harry may be out of your reach, but you can ogle the next best things at the 8th annual International Gay Polo Tournament (who knew there was such a thing?) at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida, April 6 to 9. Put your hosting skills to the test in an elaborate tailgating competition, clink glasses of bubbly with fellow Ralph Lauren-clad well-to-dos, and make an appearance at the Gay Polo League VIP tent on tourney day to indulge in tableside service with an open bar before stomping the divots. Interpret that however you’d like. Saddle up at thepalmbeaches.com.

Queens We Love: Kalah Mendoza

What was the first drag show you saw and When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession?
The first show I saw was about 15yrs ago when I went to the most famous club that Puerto Rico had at the moment (Eros).  I saw this drag queen on stage and I immediately knew that it would be my passion to do this form of art. The Drag Queens name was Auntie Nina Flowers. I was very lucky and honored to get the opportunity to start shows at Eros. After that I continued to work in this art until I decided to move to Miami. Once I moved is when I realized that this is more than doing a show and it would become a profession for me.

Who is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother and why?

It’s funny because I am always asked who my drag mother is. When I first started doing this art I started with an extravagant character (Waka La Foo). The person who helped me in the beginning was my drag mother Kathy LaFontaine. During my steps in this art I inherited a couple of drag mothers (Aunties) Satine D’ Cane, Nina Flowers, and Dixsha Norell. After a couple of years I decided to upgrade my character including a female impersonator which is when Kalah Mendoza was born. The person that helped me achieve this was my Drag Mother Edwin Irizarry and Drag Father Joshuan Aponte.

I would say that my favorite queen was Erika Andrews (Old School) because she was very glamorous and that personified the drag I interpreted. For the new generation it would have to be Bianca Del Rio, because she is not only an entertainer, but also damn funny!

What’s your favorite number to perform and why?

My favorite number would have to be a Latin song by Ana Gabriel “Huelo a Soledad,” because it is a song with a lot of feelings and every time I do this song it reminds me of people that I love a lot that are no longer with us.

What’s the best thing that has happened to you in drag?

The best thing that has happened to me in drag was having the opportunity to be Miss Noche Latina 2015 and having the opportunity to represent myself in the Miss Florida F.I. 2015 pageant and come in 4th runner up and winning best production for talent. I am also so fortunate to continue winning pageants such as Miss Miami Beach Gay Pride 2016 which gave me the opportunity to meet amazing people and feel the love and affection from my LGBT community.

What differentiates you from other Queens (Makes you Unique)?

What makes me unique would have to be charisma and talent because when I am on stage I give it all and make sure that everyone enjoys my numbers to the fullest. I like that I can to not only do a female impersonation, but create an extravaganza or comedian character.

What does the future hold?

I would definitely want to continue doing pageants and become the next Miss Florida F.I which is my dream and my next goal to accomplish. I am always grateful for all the support I get from my fans. I always want my fans to be a part of me and my future plans. I adore you all my Bunnies.

Follow me on Instagram: V_core22  and Facebook : Kalah Mendoza
Why we love her

1) She is equally comfortable doing a dramatic drag number or a fabulous dance number

2) She came and won Miss Noche Latina and Miss Miami Beach Gay Pride on her first try

3) She has that Puerto Rican Flair I love!

4) She has a full time job managing a retail store, works pretty consistently as a performer, has a relationship (We Love Agustin also) and does it all with a smile!

For many years, Ernest Montgomery has photographed men of the Dominican Republic. His first photo book, Dominicanos, is a best-seller. Now follows a second volume of his most erotic works: Hermoso.

The title of the book alludes to what awaits us inside: the most beautiful men of the Dominican Republic, photographed by an outstanding artist.

FROM THE FOREWORD OF HERMOSO BY TERRANCE DEAN: “Hermoso” is a Spanish word meaning handsome, beautiful. It is an aesthetic one embodies and possesses naturally. For Dominican men, it is innate, part of their DNA. In this new project, Hermoso, Ernest Montgomery captures Dominican men in intimate and seductive scenes throughout Santo Domingo, Bonao, Barahona, Las Terrenas, Moca, Haina, San Cristobal, and San Juan de Maguana.

These rural communities are filled with hard-working men, laborers, barbers, taxi drivers, sports players, and small businessmen who are fathers, uncles, and brothers looking to provide for their families and their communities. They are determined men who dream and dream big. They want what every man wants for himself: a house, economic mobility, and a loving family. So they work diligently to make their dream a reality. And though they work hard, they play and love even harder.

Montgomery invites us to join him on a journey. It is a mission which provides entrée into the world of these beautiful and handsome men of the Dominican Republic. We find ourselves being guided inside the countryside, beaches, and barrios of these men. It is inside the corridors of the barrio — in the crevices of the seediest corners that these images reflect the bright colorful interior of Dominican male life — from the barbershop, to the baseball field, the basketball court, the luscious green land, and its majestic beaches.

These images are daring, bold, and vibrant. Each holds a story, an insight, and a view into a world that is not often seen to the outsider. You now have access to intimately engage into a privileged world. Take part and allow yourself to be fully immersed inside him, them. Fall deep inside the abyss of the hermoso. Allow your imagination to freely flow. Allow yourself to drift mindlessly. And, while you are there, feel free to feel around, touch, gaze, adore, and appreciate all the wonder.

¨Hermoso¨ is available on Amazon for $69.99 For more information, visit BrunoGmuender.com

Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man

Hit off-Broadway show comes to South Florida

Naughty and educational, the off-Broadway hit comedy “Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man” will be presented in the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts through Sunday, April 9.

Based on the international best-selling book of the same title, the interactive comedy takes the audience on a hilarious and wild ride where no topic is taboo and the insider “tips” come from the perfect source: a gay man.

The comedy is set at a local university auditorium where the English department holds its monthly meet-the-author event and where this month’s featured author is Dan Anderson of “Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man.” With the help of a hunky stage assistant named Stefan, Dan aims to turn the event upside down with a highly theatrical, audience interactive, sex tip seminar.

Theatermania.com raved of the long-running off-Broadway show, “”An uproariously funny series of interactive demonstrations, Sex Tips is one of the best shows you’ll see this year!”

It was a pleasure to sit down with Jacklyn Collier (who plays Robyn) and Sean Hankinson (who plays Dan) for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

Were you a ham as a kid?

J – I started acting when I was six, after going into a local talent show. I sang Elvis, Patsy Kline and some Shakespeare.
S- I told my mom when I was a kid I wanted to be an actor. She was not a stage mom, and said you need to figure this out. At the age of six I called a manager, and the rest is history.

At what age did you start acting professionally?

J – I started acting professionally the summer before college.
S- I started working professionally at 14.

How did you get cast in “Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man”?

J- I got the audition through my agent. I had wanted to see the show for quite a while; it had been on my bucket list. When I got cast, I felt amazing.
S- I got cast because of Jacklyn as we have been friends for nine years. She got me the audition and I got the part.

What has been your favorite part, other than this one, and why?

J – I wrote and produced a web series with my writing partner called “This is My Roommate.” It was my favorite part to play because we created the characters and acted in it. I was able to cast friends, I produced and directed it.

S- I did a contract for “Life in the Dream House,” a TV show form Mattel, and I did the voice of Ken for five years. It was a dream role!

What should the Central Florida audiences expect from “Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man”?

S – You are going to walk away with actual knowledge as it’s based on a real book. It actually helps all people and we will help to unlock the true potential of everyone in the bedroom and in life.
J -People leave a lot freer in their sexuality and the freedom to express themselves as they want to. Basically we want everyone to own their sexuality. It’s very empowering.

Has your sex life gotten better since starring in the show?

S- Yes, I am a curious person naturally, so when someone gives me a tip I need to try it out. I am willing to do anything twice. I have definitely found new ways to enjoy my sexual experiences.
J – I think Sean and I have very satisfied partners. The actual tips I have tried have been well received.

Performances are Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7 and 9:30 p.m. On Sunday shows are at 1 and 6 p.m. Starting one hour prior to the performance and during intermission, sumptuous sandwiches, salads, snacks and desserts are available for purchase with convenient walk-up service. Andrea Martin- Broadway Legend sits down with Hotspots

Tony Award Winner Andrea Martin set to perform in Fort Lauderdale

The Parker Playhouse welcomes the Broadway and TV legend on April 1

The “Broadway Concert Series” Hosted by Sirius XM Radio Star Seth Rudetsky whom the New York Times dubbed “The Mayor of Broadway,” is returning to Fort Lauderdale. This popular concert series produced by Mark Cortale, returns to The Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Parker Playhouse on April 1 with comedy legend Andrea Martin, star of TV’s SCTV and two-time Tony Award winner for the Broadway revival of “Pippin” and “My Favorite Year.” The show starts at 8 p.m.
What differentiates this concert series from any other, is the seamless mix of intimate behind-the-scenes stories from Broadway’s biggest stars – prompted by the encyclopedic minded Rudetsky’s probing, funny, revealing questions – and their stellar singing of musical theatre repertoire.

Andrea Martin is the legendary comedy star of SCTV and the film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” She won her second and most recent Tony Award in 2013 for her performance as Berthe in the Broadway revival of “Pippin” and was nominated for another Tony Award last season for the 2016 production “Noises Off.”  Her new series “Great News,” executive produced by Tina Fey, premieres April 25 on NBC, and Andrea can currently be seen on the Hulu hit series “Difficult People” created by Julie Klausner.
Martin’s big break came when she got cast in the original Toronto production of “Godspell,” in what is now considered the legendary cast of Victor Garber, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner, Jayne Eastwood and Paul Shaffer, their musical director. She went on to join the famous “SCTV” (Second City TV) troupe winning two Emmy awards for writing, winning her first Tony award for Featured Actress in a Musical for “My Favorite Year,” and also garnering Tony nominations for her roles in “Young Frankenstein,” “Oklahoma” and “Candide.” Her film credits include “Breaking Upwards,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” “All Over the Guy,” “Young Triffie’s Been Made Away With,” “Stepping Out,” “Bogus,” “Wag the Dog,” “New York Minute,” “Black Christmas,” and “Cannibal Girls.” In addition to her legendary work on “SCTV,” her television credits include “My Big Fat Greek Life,” “Ed,” and “Nurse Jackie.”

Seth Rudetsky, has hosted the “Broadway Series” at The Nourse Theatre in San Francisco for its three seasons, as well as in Provincetown for the six seasons since its inception, and nation-wide in many other major cities. He is the afternoon host on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio’s “On Broadway” as well as the host of “Seth Speaks” on SiriusXM Stars. As a pianist, he has played piano for over a dozen Broadway shows including “Ragtime,” “Les Miserables.” and “Phantom of the Opera” among many others. As a comic, Rudetsky was awarded “Funniest Gay Male in NY” at Stand-Up NY and is a three-time Emmy nominee as a writer for “The Rosie O’Donnell Show.” His newest book, “The Rise and Fall of a Theater Geek” was published by Random House and is available on Amazon.com. He co-wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed new musical “Disaster!” this past season on Broadway.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Andrea Martin for this Exclusive Hotspot interview.

Were you always a comedienne/actor as a kid or when did it start?

I wasn’t always a comedienne. Shockingly I don’t think it started until I was 27 and joined SCTV in Toronto. Before that I was doing musicals and plays. At SCTV I was forced to hone my comedic abilities.

What was your first professional/paid gig?

When I was 13, I performed Liat in South Pacific at the Kennebunkport playhouse, and I think I got paid for that. Penny Fuller played the lead.

I definitely got paid for being a chicken on Captain Kangaroo.

When did you realize entertainment was going to be your career?

I have to say by process of elimination from Children’s Theater in Portland, Maine. I never considered anything else. I just thought I love this, and I continued doing it. I was lucky enough to work constantly.

You have done TV, Broadway and Movies, what is your favorite and why?

My favorite thing is theater. It’s what I am most used to as I started at nine years old. It’s a comfortable process for me and its great muscle memory. In TV and Film I have to be very conscious on how I am performing. I also love the schedule and comradery of doing theater and knowing I have the opportunity the next night to get something right.

Do you have a favorite role or roles?

I have two favorite roles. The first is Serafina Delle Rose in “The Rose Tattoo” and the other is Berthe in “Pippin.” Both challenged me in many ways and I love these women. Serafina Delle Rose proved to me that I could be a serious actress. And Berthe showed me and the audience that no matter what your age you can still have vitality and enthusiasm for life.

What is your fantasy role?

I would like to be the wife in “Death of a Salesman.” I would also love a dramatic role in a TV Series.

You have won two Emmy Awards and two Tony Awards, when are you winning your Oscar?

I don’t think it’s an impossibility… I hope before I’m 90.

Have you worked with Seth Before?

I met him in 1991, when he was my musical director and we have been really good friends ever since. We have travelled throughout North America together, and it’s always fun to be with him.

What should the south Florida audiences expect from your performance with Seth in the Broadway Series?

They should expect frivolity, laughter, an intimate evening, collaboration, an escape, and a whole lot of fun. This show is very informal and I love to talk with the audience.

What’s ahead for Andrea Martin?

Currently, I am shooting “Difficult People” for Hulu, and on April 25, my series, “Great News” for NBC premieres at 9 p.m. I really hope everyone watches as I love this character and this show and I really want it to be picked up. In a couple months I will be shooting a film in Toronto called “Little Italy.”

For tickets to this spontaneous evening of hilarity and show-stopping songs, please visit BrowardCenter.org or call 954-468-3280.

HIV in the age of PrEP

By Richard Hack
At first it was heralded as a medical miracle—the news that a daily single dose of the drug Truvada protected sexually active people from contracting the HIV virus.  The news became headlines around the world in July 2012, when the US Food and Drug Administration approved Truvada as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for those who actively pursued condomless sex. Not only aimed at gays, the FDA tossed its net wide and included “heterosexual men or women who do not regularly use condoms during sex with partners of unknown HIV status;” all those who had “injection of illicit drugs with sharing of equipment;” as well as “discordant heterosexual and homosexual partners where one partner is HIV-positive and the other HIV-negative.”  Leave no stone unturned.

That only made common sense, of course, since everyone seemed to know that both straights and gays have unprotected sex at one time or another in their lives. It just seemed that the word on the street suggested that gays had it far more often than the rest of mankind in general—which is why HIV was much more likely to infect gay men, at least in the United States.
Unfortunately, what was true in 2012 is still true to this day.  There are currently 1.2 million people living with HIV in the US (and 1 in 9 don’t even know they have the disease). Even so, there is genuine progress being made in the fight against the disease. From 2005 to 2014, HIV diagnoses have declined 19 percent. No small victory.

The good news ends, however, with today’s youth. Black gay and bisexual men between the ages of 13 and 24 had seen an increase in HIV infection by 87 percent in the past several years. Clearly the word is not reaching this group–or youth in general for that matter. Regardless of race, of all age groups, those between 20-29 have the largest increase in infection rate in this country.
Of that group, less than two percent have been taking Truvada as PrEP. In fact, even as the drug has gained in popularity as a pre-exposure prophylaxis, current data from its manufacturer Gilead Sciences suggests just 49,000 prescriptions of the blue pill have been filled across the country.

Cost is one reason. In the United States, the average price of Truvada is $1,564 per month. And while Gilead Sciences does have programs in place to make the drug available for low income patients, the shear cost of the drug is prohibitive to most working class adults. Insurance rarely helps to cover PrEP, since using Truvada as a prophylaxis is not treating a medical condition. (Note: When used to treat an existing HIV infection, Truvada must be prescribed in combination with another HIV drug, bringing the combined cost to well over $3,000 per month.)
But cost isn’t the only reason that Truvada and PrEP have hit some stumbling blocks. There is also the on-going protest over PrEP’s use by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and its president Michael Weinstein.  Weinstein is concerned that those on PrEP will not take Truvada consistently, thereby giving a false sense of protection. Additionally, Weinstein feels that PrEP advocates, including the Center for Disease Control, are not being completely honest to sexually active adults by suggesting that PrEP is an effective tool for the masses. Weinstein feels that only the wholesale use of condoms will accomplish that.
“If you have multiple partners or your partner has multiple partners, the most effective protection for yourself, your partners, and our community is a condom,” Weinstein states. “Mass PrEP administration is a dangerous experiment that is not supported by medical science and is currently resisted by doctors and patients alike.”

And then there are the name callers.  Oh yes. Take PrEP and proclaim it loudly or often enough, and you are likely to be labeled an “HIV slut” or a “Truvada whore.”  In case you’ve missed the theory here, the common thought is that if you have access to the big blue pill, you will be more prone to throw caution to the wind and behave even more dangerously during sex. Exactly what you might do is limited only by your imagination, but certainly other drugs are among your options here, including but not limited to Tina (otherwise known as crystal methamphetamine, krank, tweak, or ice).
But mere name calling is a minor point when compared with HIV, the disease, is concerned. While the virus doesn’t appear much in the news these days, it may be making a sudden and ugly resurgence. The source has nothing to do with PrEP or other pharmaceutical advances; and everything to do with the American Health Care Act as currently being proposed by the Republican led Congress and President Donald Trump.
AIDS United, the largest and longest running national coalition of community-based HIV/AIDS organizations, has just announced its opposition to the suggested replacement for the Affordable Care Act. “This is the biggest attack to the health care system as we know it and the stakes are critical,” AIDS United vice president of policy and advocacy Ronald Johnson said. “Millions of people gained access to [health] care through the Affordable Care Act—many for the first time. And these gains are at risk.

This isn’t an improvement to the Affordable Care Act. This is a hack job that puts tax cuts for wealthy people above the health needs of people.

“The serious changes contemplated by this Act will directly undermine the goals of providing treatment and care for people living with HIV as well as the goal of ending the epidemic. AIDS United strongly opposes this Act. We encourage our partners and advocates to contact the House Ways and Means Committee and House Energy and Commerce Committee to oppose this bill.
PrEP, Truvada, and government health plans. You be the judge.

Interview with Dr. Patrick Kenney

Dr. Patrick Kenney is widely-respected as an expert in Infectious Diseases whose practice at Midland Medical Center, East Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, specializes in the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Kenney completed his Infectious Disease fellowship at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine.
JACKSON: It’s hard to believe this is 2017 and people are still getting infected with HIV – with the infection rates in South and Central Florida being among the highest in the nation. What are the latest biomedical advances? What’s next?
DR. KENNEY: With nearly forty years that have passed since the onset of the outbreak, I am sad to say that yes, we are still seeing new cases of HIV.  In this technologically advanced era, the virus remains as insidious as it was in the early 1980s but we as a community have become much more aware of the modes and risks of transmission and now have very advanced treatments that suppress the virus.  As for the latest biomedical advances, pharmaceutical companies both in the United States and abroad are developing treatments that are much more tolerable with less pill burden and adverse effects, more pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) options, vaccine trials, and cure modalities.  The trouble with HIV is that it invades the nucleus of the cell, an area that holds the DNA and thus our genetic code. Scientists now know where the virus is hiding and are working on ways to “unlock” the virus from our DNA, which in turn would create a functional cure leading to eradication of the virus.

JACKSON: You have been on the medical battle lines of HIV for the past 5 years. What has that experience been like – seeing a disease that was once a death sentence become one that’s about as manageable as diabetes?
DR KENNEY: Growing up as a child in the 1980s in a small town in Rhode Island, HIV was something that was thought of as something completely foreign and that we had nothing to fear. It was considered something that happened in the cities like New York or Boston. But it did not take long before family friends were becoming ill and dying from these complications that no one had heard of and physicians at time only read about in their medical studies.  In 1996, the scientific community made a strong triumph with development of the first “cocktail” therapy against HIV with the novel class of drugs called the protease inhibitors.  HIV death rates have dropped since then and now most HIV infected patients are on single tablet regimens which contain three sometimes four medications. Now as a physician, I am happy to report that many of my HIV patients do very well on treatment and now can expect to have the same life expectancy as their HIV-negative counterparts. I do, however, recommend that HIV infected patients do seek care from providers with experience with the current therapies, as many of the agents can interact with other common treatments for problems such high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and diabetes (a condition that is a great deal more difficult to manage than HIV I might add).

JACKSON: The discovery a few years ago of the science to control viral loads and make HIV-positive individuals “undetectable” made the disease manageable. Now, biomedical advances have given us pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) which, when taken as prescribed by HIV- negative individuals, is close to 100% effective in eliminating the transmission of HIV by a partner. What, from a medical perspective, has been the impact of PrEP? Do you recommend that every MSM with more than one sexual partner have a prescription for PrEP?
DR. KENNEY: PrEP has been a game changer on both sides of the fence.  For the HIV negative person, a new layer of protection has been added in conjunction with condoms to provide a nearly 100% barrier from infection.  For HIV positive folks, the fear of transmitting the virus to a negative partner has diminished allowing for continuance of sexual expression and intimacy.  Of course there are those individuals who blame PrEP for the elevated incidence in other sexually transmitted infections as less and less people are using barrier protection methods such as condoms.  My response to that would be in my experience patients who are on PrEP are monitored much more closely than those who are not.  PrEP requires patients to get quarterly STI screenings as well kidney and liver function tests to ensure the medication does not cause any adverse effects.  This close monitoring allows patients to catch STIs such gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis at early stages. Since all of these infections are reported to county health departments, we have more numbers to report and hence the increase. So, yes I think all sexually active MSM at risk should be on PrEP. That being said, I do ask my patients to continue using condoms if the are sexually active with multiple partners as we are seeing a rise in antibiotic-resistant strains of infections such as gonorrhea. This resistance is very real and does pose a threat to our community as time goes on.  Please go out and get tested regularly to ensure that you are tested first, treated secondly.
Jackson: More than half of individuals living with HIV in the United States are now aged 50 or older. What are we learning about aging with HIV?
DR. KENNEY: We are very fortunate that HIV-infected individuals have the capacity to live a healthy life. But like any chronic illness, HIV can affect several body systems, especially the cardiovascular system.  Also, our aging community was faced with having to take some of the earlier HIV medications which did have severe side effects including anemia, lipodystrophy (fat redistribution), and atherosclerotic disease. However, studies have shown that, with viral suppression from the HIV medications, we are able to decrease the amount of inflammation the virus causes on the vascular system.  We still have a great deal to learn from our aging patients, but we are so happy that the majority of them are doing well despite the grim prognosis they may have been faced with 30 years ago.

Hollywood Inside & Out

I thought awards season was over. And yet, there are still a couple ceremonies to talk about – like the iHeartRadio Awards. I can hear you rolling your eyes, but suspend your disbelief until I share this almost touching story. When Justin Timberlake received an award for “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, he said: “If you are black or you are brown or you are gay or you are a lesbian or you are trans or maybe you’re just a sissy singing boy from Tennessee. Anyone who has treated you unkindly, it’s only because they are afraid or they have been taught to be afraid of how important you are. Because being different means you make a difference. So, f%ck ’em.”  I’m not sure about all that Kumbaya crap, but I have no problem getting behind Justin – especially when he’s saying “F&ck ’em!”

I ask your indulgence in this next story because, to be honest, I have no idea what I’m talking about. I had abandoned “American Idol” long before it limped to its final days on the tube. But I vaguely remember La’Porsha. What can I say? I have a penchant for big black women with apostrophes in their names. I went back in the archives of BillyMasters.com, and read some quotes she made when the so-called “bathroom bill” passed in her native Mississippi. On the topic of homosexuality, she said, “I am one of the people who doesn’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way; it wasn’t how I was raised. But I do have a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual and they’re such sweet, nice people.” So I find it all the more mind-boggling that now, a scant year later, she’s made what I find a startling statement: “I chose to be heterosexual after being homosexual for two years.” Huh? Turns out, this revelation is in support of another one of her beliefs. “You’re wrong to think it’s not a choice for some…because it was for me.” She has also said, “I chose a belief system that felt TRUE to my spirit.” She calls it a choice. Others might call it denial.

Something which is definitely a choice is whether or not to be a wh@re. I don’t say that in a disparaging way. After all, everybody loves a wh@re. If they didn’t, it would be hard to earn the title. This story is an update on the wh@re of 2016 (and several previous decades), Logo’s “Prince Charming”, Robert Sepulveda. Brace yourself – he’s single. I know – who couldn’t see that coming? “Eric is a super, super sweet guy, but we’re not together and I’m completely, completely single.” Sounds like an escort ad to me. But, wait – he’s not done. “I have lots of production companies that are interested in doing shows with me, so I’m going to focus on that and my pocketbook.” What a shocking shift in priorities – holding out for cash. But, riddle me this – who are these numerous production companies looking to hire an aging gay hooker? ‘Cause I’m willing to put out…for a price.

Last week, John Barrowman reached a landmark – he turned 50. And he celebrated the event in several ways. First, he chopped off all his hair and revealed his natural silver coloring – which I must say suits him. Then he launched a T-shirt campaign to support transgender rights and posted a photo wearing the shirt (taken pre-coif). “Most of us have the luxury of being who we are and living our truth. We must stand in solidarity with those who are not as lucky. Grab one of these t-shirts and wear it with pride. Let’s show our support for our transgender family.” Proceeds from the campaign will go to the Trans Youth Equality Foundation. As Johnny suggests, you can grab one at Represent.com/barrowman.

As noble and fulfilling as that endeavor is, what he’ll likely remember from turning 50 is the sight of his “Arrow” co-star, Stephen Amell, bringing out his birthday cake wearing only a pair of snug camouflage undies! Since John has frequently expressed his fondness for Amell’s physique, this was certainly the gift that kept on giving. You can see Barrowman blowing out his candles on BillyMasters.com.

Someone noticeably absent from Barrowman’s birthday bash was Colton Haynes. But he had a good reason – he got engaged. Engaged? Didn’t he just meet this guy? Actually, he just went public about his beau – they’ve been together for weeks…er, months. Colton’s florist/boyfriend got Cher to make a video singing their favorite song, “I’ve Got You Babe”, and then he popped the question complete with fireworks. What could possibly go wrong?

When “straight as an arrow” takes on new meaning, it’s definitely time to end yet another column. You know what I got out of this column? That Eric from “Finding Prince Charming” is available. So, while I schedule a blow-out, you can check out www.BillyMasters.com – the site that only takes a little off the top. If you have a question, send it along to Billy@BillyMasters.com and I promise to get back to you before Eric asks if I brought my own shampoo bottle. So, until next time, remember, one man’s filth is another man’s bible.

Need Wood: Scratch and Sniff

Hey woody!

I love how guys smell, from fresh sweat (not the same as “BO” for the ignoranti), to crotch, d!ck and butt (not the same as caca for philistines!). The right smell is 10 times more effective than Viagra. I’ve picked up great looking guys online but if they show up, like they usually do, smelling of soap and baby powder, sorry, but my stick goes south. Before meeting, I’ve tried to tell them indirectly that I don’t like soap smells, but usually they run away as if I’m going to show up smelling like I smeared a Camembert in my crotch. Am I deviant and abnormal? Will ex-gay therapy cure me of this?  It seems that everybody has been brainwashed by a 50’s housewife mentality –everything in its place looking pretty. How can I tell guys what I like without having them run away?

 — Sniff, Sniff

Dear Sniff-Sniff:

You’re scaring people off because you haven’t struck the right tone. Too direct (“I love nicotine-stained underwear!”) and they’re going to hit the delete button like a woodpecker. But too indirect and they’ll do the same thing. Why? Because the absence of information forces people to make negative assumptions.

So, be straightforward but diplomatic. Say something like, “You know how men get turned on by what they see? I get turned on by what I smell. So, my perfect sexual experience would be for you to show up showered without scented soap, cologne or deodorant. Or unshowered, but without smelling like an anchovy’s c*nt.”

Ok, maybe I’d leave out that last bit, but you get my point.  Ask and you shall receive.

Hey, woody!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the great column on bad breath. But, you never addressed how to tell somebody they smell like they just rimmed a dozen dirty bungholes after smoking a pack of cigarettes. I’ve left mouthwash, floss and a toothbrush out for them but they’re clueless. And the few times I’ve been direct they get offended. Help!

— Olfactory Assaulted

Dear Olfactory,

There’s just no easy way to tell people their breath makes your eyes water. It’s not like you’re telling them they’ve got broccoli in their teeth, a booger in their nose, or a bat in their cave. I mean, they can look in a mirror and see that. But you can’t smell your own breath (the body gets used to its own odors) so being indirect won’t work. Neither will being direct if they think you’re being passive-aggressive or just plain insulting. Try “sharing” the problem. Don’t say, “You’ve got bad breath so gargle, b!tch!”  Say, “I think we both could use a little mouthwash. Come to the bathroom with me and let’s use it together.”

New Scholarship fund announced to honor Charlie Cinnamon

South Florida Theatre Legend’s memory will live on

Florida Theatrical Association (FTA) has announced the Charlie Cinnamon Theater Scholarship in honor of longtime FTA board member Charlie Cinnamon, who passed away in November of last year. The scholarship will be available to Central and South Florida high school students for continuing theater education throughout the summer months.

“Charlie’s heart and passion for the arts community, especially in his home of South Florida, was unmatched and it was a true gift to have him serve on our board of directors,” said FTA’s Executive Director Larry Watchorn. “He was devoted to education for all, especially in the area of performing arts, and we could think of no better way to honor his name and legacy than setting up this scholarship fund to engage and empower young talent.”

Cinnamon was a staple in the South Florida arts community, a theater press agent since the 1950s.  Among his many achievements and contributions, he is credited with starting the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, one of the nation’s premiere juried arts shows.

As part of the Charlie Cinnamon Theater Scholarship students will receive scholarship monies for summer continuing education programs including theater camps, schools, workshops. Winners will be chosen as part of the District Thespian Conferences in Broward, Miami Dade, Orange and Seminole Counties.

Hot Bodies: Rise and Shine!

The Benefits of Morning Workouts.

by Tom Bonanti

Do you have difficulty cramming the time to exercise into an already hectic schedule? Is your weight loss program stalled due to bad eating habits? Do you get out of bed anxious and cranky?  These are all serious problems. Sad to say, there are no easy solutions or magic fixes. Yet many have found that an early morning exercise regime has its advantages as far as increasing energy, speeding up weight loss and even elevating moods. Here’s how working out in the AM can make you sparkle.

First, exercising in the morning frees up your day. Getting your workout in before work means that you’ll be up for impromptu dinner plans, a movie with friends, or maybe even a hot date. Who knows what the day holds when you start it off right? Plus, your time in the gym is time just for you, before you give it all away to your job, co-workers, or friends.

Secondly, when you exercise, the effort helps to deliver fresh oxygen and nutrients to muscles, organs and other tissues. And that means your whole cardiovascular system and all of your muscles will work more efficiently all day long. You’ll experience more energy and a spike in your metabolism that will help you burn more fat and calories even on days when you’re stuck behind a computer or conference table.

Thirdly, early morning exercise jump starts your brain better than the strongest caffeine fix. Exercise has both short-term and long-term brain benefits. Studies show that the short-term benefits include better executive function and memory recall. In addition, exercise can alleviate morning anxiety and depression by increasing the production of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killing and feel good hormones. There are even instances of people getting off anti-depressants and anxiety meds because they’ve found their high in exercise!

Finally, research shows that working out in the morning coupled with a healthy breakfast is the only way to start the day. Exercise helps to rev up your metabolism so that you’ll have better endurance as you face challenges and stress. A breakfast comprised of a 3-2-1 ratio of low glycemic index carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats helps you to have a steady supply of energy throughout the day. You’ll also store less fat and be less likely to give into those pesky cravings for sugary treats and quick-fix fast foods.

Clearly, there are advantages to working out in the AM, but for many people this is just not an option. If this is true for you, take heart; your body will respond to exercise any time of the day as long as you can stick with a steady and consistent exercise program which includes cardio, weights, and sound nutritional principles.

Hot Talk: The Best Chatter on Facebook this Week

“The whole issue of sexuality is so grey… It’s cool that you don’t have to nail everything down any more. That whole certainty about whether you’re straight or gay or whatever.”

Actress KRISTEN STEWART, who has openly dated women, telling The Guardian (U.K.) she welcomes a future without labels.
“They may have been phony in the past, but they’re real now.”

Press Secretary SEAN SPICER, referring to the latest national job report which President Trump called “phony” during the Obama administration.
“I’m worried that a child placement agency may make what is in the best interest of the child a correct decision but be subject to a lawsuit by someone who has a little bit of a leg up by virtue of being in a protective class.”

South Dakota Governor DENNIS DAUGAARD, who just became the first governor to sign a law legalizing discrimination against LGBTQ people in 2017.
“Once I saw we were not the ultimate arbiters of divine truth but flawed human beings, I couldn’t pretend otherwise… I couldn’t justify our actions – especially our cruel practice of protesting funerals and celebrating human tragedy. These shifts in my perspective contributed to a larger erosion of trust in my church, and eventually it made it impossible for me to stay.”

MEGAN PHELPS-ROPER, daughter of unofficial spokeswoman of the notorious hate group Westboro Baptist Church, based in Topeka, Kansas, explaining why she left the church in 2012..
“You know what, Americans have choices, and they’ve got to make a choice. And so maybe, rather than getting that new iPhone that they just love and want to go spend hundreds of dollars on, maybe they should invest in their own health care.”

Rep. JASON CHAFFETZ (R-Utah), telling CNN that obtaining health care is a personal responsibility for Americans.
“The Orange One’s new budget would decrease funding to programs such as Meals on Wheels, leaving many of our elderly hungry. Because many can’t cook, a meal is the only thing keeping them out of nursing homes, which they can’t afford. ‘Make America Great Again,’ my ass! How about a few less million dollar-plus trips to Florida and a few more meals for our senior citizens?”

Need Wood: Measuring Up

Hey woody!

I’m 25, bright and easy on the eyes. I thought I had it going on until I started watching amateur p@rn online. I swear to God, every guy I’ve seen had a beer can c@ck! Now I’m so self-conscious about my d!ck I’m embarrassed to pull my pants down in the locker room or the bedroom. Is there a safe, proven way of enlarging my penis?

–Pretty, but small

Dear Pretty but Small:

There is only one way to safely enlarge your penis: Lay it on my desk and I’ll whack it with a hammer. You won’t believe how big it’ll get.

Believe me, that’s the *safest* way of making your d!ck bigger. With the exception of the  two percent of guys who have a “micro-phallus,” every reputable medical association recommends against penis enlargement surgery. Do it and you’ll probably end up with crooked, lumpy and deformed shafts, erections that point downward, raw nerves caught in scar tissue and fluid that chronically collects around the testicles.

Sorry, but contrary to the promise of spam in your inbox, there’s no way to “MAKE YOUR D!CK BIGGER THAN A CLUB!!!”  There’s no pill, no pump, no enzyme that’s going to give you “THE MIRACLE OF A 14-INCH HORSE C@CK!!!!  There’s no surgery that’s going to give you “MEATY 10-INCH SCHLONGS!!!!

Yes, I know you’d like to “ADD FOUR TERRIFYING INCHES TO YOUR WANG!!!! But I’m afraid the only way you can do that is to borrow Jake Deckard’s d!ck for the weekend.

Optical illusions make a lot of us think we’ve got small d!cks.  First, video cameras make everything look bigger.  So, while there are certainly large schlongs in professional and amateur p@rn, a lot of those “beer can d!cks” have a light beer label.

Second, almost everybody else’s penis looks bigger because you’re looking straight at theirs but down at yours.  Angles make a difference.  If you want to get a better indication of the size of your own thing, don’t look down; look in the mirror.

Queens We Love: Champagne Bordeaux

Queens we Love!

Champagne Bordeaux

What was the first drag show you saw and tell me about the experience?

The first show I attended was Sizzling Sundayz at Wall Street Night Club in Columbus Ohio, the year was 1991. I can close my eyes and remember I sat alone at the far outer corner of the stage. I was underage but was invited by a new friend whom was in the show. I do not know how or when Amanda Kane got a glimpse of my face, but as she reached the end of the runway she yelled out to me to proclaim that “b!tches pay a lot of money for cheeks like yours!!” needless to say the spotlight swung my way and I was totally embarrassed and vowed to never come back to watch another show, and I kept my word till less than a year later I was on cast!

When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession?

I decided to do drag to get into the grown men night with my underage self. Back in the day the Queens walked through the lines and into the club. It was a crash course cause you had to walk like you been at it for a while. I personally never decided that drag was my profession. Drag has been a tug of war with my adult existence. I knew at age seven that I was more female than male, and the first time I saw drag or even trans people was that first show, so it was refreshing to know it was possible to be me! Drag has always been that fuzzy line. Today I am a personal chef, and still doing drag.

Who is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother and why?

My original drag mother was the best “Whitney” I knew, Shante Seville, who is gone to soon. My destiny drag mother is Former Miss Florida FI. Tiffany Middlesex. She started her career at Cesar’s in Toledo Ohio, where I actually got hired to be part of the cast. Who would have thought I would move to Florida and have one of the biggest legends answer me when I say MOM!

After moving to Florida, one night I went to the Coliseum for a Gary Santis event. As I walked into the main room, I saw flags boys and the one and only Latrice Royale. Not only is she one of the most talented people I know, she has been and stayed my friend and drag mother through all my crazy days.

What’s your favorite number to perform and why?

My favorite number to perform is my sister act medley and the illusion of Dionne Warwick, because I not only have to resemble her but I must pick up her very distinct mannerisms like the way she holds a mic and her jaw movement. I change my body position to mimic her walk and stance and all while looking like those words are coming from my soul. What can I say, I love the challenge! Whoopi Goldberg is a very close second.

What’s the best thing that has happened to you in drag?

The best thing that has happened in drag for me is honestly the people I have met and become close to. It is because of those people’s support in my life  that I have been able achieve some of the near impossible feats I have accomplished and survived.

What differentiates you from other Queens (Makes you Unique)?

My diversity is what sets me apart, I was taught early in my career, that is was not how pretty you are; it’s how much you sweat, people want to be entertained.

What does the future hold?

In my future I see a Food truck, specializing in Soul Food, feeding faces and of course DOING DRAG!

Why we Love her

1)      At 45 years old she can dance the house down like an 18 year old.

2)      Her impersonations are on point!

3)      She has an old school mentality and is always on time!

4)      She went back to school at 40 years old, and proved to us all it’s never too late for education or to capture your dreams!

The Tony winning musical “Something Rotten!” makes its debut in South Florida

Cast member Blake Hammond chats with Hotspots

The completely original new musical “Something Rotten!,” directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (“The Book of Mormon”, “Aladdin”), with music and lyrics by Grammy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Wayne Kirkpatrick and Golden Globe Award and Tony Award nominee Karey Kirkpatrick and a book by Tony Award nominees Karey Kirkpatrick and best-selling author John O’Farrell, opens at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts March 21, for a limited two week run through April 2, 2017.

This hilarious new musical comedy tells the story of brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom, two playwrights stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star Will Shakespeare. When a soothsayer foretells the next big thing in theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, the Bottom brothers set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL! With the most singing, the most dancing and the most gut-busting laughs on Broadway, it’s something wonderful … something for everyone … It’s Something Rotten!, “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years” (Time Out New York)!

Nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, “Something Rotten!” comes to South Florida with three principal cast members direct from Broadway: Rob McClure as Nick Bottom, Adam Pascal as Shakespeare and Josh Grisetti as Nigel Bottom.

The touring cast also features Maggie Lakis as Bea, Blake Hammond as Nostradamus, Autumn Hurlbert as Portia, Scott Cote as Brother Jeremiah and Jeff Brooks as Shylock.

Rounding out the ensemble are Lucy Anders, Kyle Nicholas Anderson, Kate Bailey, Daniel Beeman, Brandon Bieber, Mandie Black, Nick Rashad Burroughs, Ian Campayno, Pierce Cassedy, Eric Coles, Drew Franklin, Juliane Godfrey, Leah Hofmann, Kristie Kerwin, Ralph Meitzler, Patrick John Moran, Joel Newsome, Con O’Shea-Creal and Tonya Thompson.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Blake Hammond for this Hotspots Exclusive interview:

Were you always a performer, even as a kid or when did you get “the bug”?

I performed as a kid for my mom on the fireplace, but I started doing theater late in High school. I then studied at the University of Texas in Austin in the theater program. I was lucky enough to go there on scholarship.

What was your first professional/paid gig?

My first paid gig was when I did summer stock in university. I was 19 years old.

Other than Nostradamus, what has been your favorite role to play and why?

I have two favorites. The first is when I played Edna Turnblad in “Hairspray” on Broadway. This was so great because it was my first time on Broadway and what a great part to play. The other one was “The Adams Family” where I played Uncle Fester. It was really fun to play a 10 year old boy in a 35 year old’s body. I got to be a kid every night.

What is your Fantasy role to play?

I have to say I would love to sing the songs of Jean Val Jean from “Les Miserables,” but it’s not the type or role I am usually cast in.

You have received L.A. Critics, Carbonell, Chicago After Dark and Indy Soap awards. How does it feel when you get these awards and does it ever get less nerve racking?

No, it does not get less nerve racking. I think awards are interesting because it’s hard to say who is the best, but I must admit, it is fun to hear your name being called.

What should the South Florida audiences expect from this production of the “Something Rotten!”?

It is the funniest show I have ever been in, so expect tons of laughs. Our producer, Kevin McCullum, calls it “The Make America Laugh Again Tour.” Also, the cast of this production are absolutely lovely. They are bunch of fun people, and I think it shows on stage.

Hot Talk: The Best Chatter on Facebook this Week

“F___ ’em, they shouldn’t have been driving that fast.”

Robert Glover, a Charles County, Maryland law enforcement officer, referring to a traffic accident which killed two teenagers. Glover was suspended after he posted his comments on Facebook.

“His policies aside, which you can only hate, I thought he would have just relaxed… The maliciousness of this White House has people worried, which is why I’m not going to do it much longer, the impersonation… Trump just overwhelmingly lacks any kind of sportsmanship. He remains bitter and angry…”

Actor Alec Baldwin, announcing his decision to stop impersonating President Trump on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
“Governor Rick Scott made the Pulse tragedy a centerpiece in his annual State of the State address. While we are glad the governor spotlighted the Pulse tragedy, we are deeply disappointed that when talking about the worst anti-LGBT attack in our nation’s history, our governor failed to acknowledge the LGBTQ community…”
Hannah Willard of Equality Florida, on Facebook

“I wrote this song because I wanted it to be about inclusion, about being together… If you are black or you are brown or you are gay, or you are lesbian, or you are trans, or maybe you’re just a sissy singing boy from Tennessee – anyone who has treated you unkindly, it’s because they are afraid or they have been taught to be afraid of how important you are. Because being different means you make the difference, so f— ’em.”

–Justin Timberlake in his acceptance speech for winning an IHeartRadio award for his song, “Can’t Stop The Feeling.”

“I am so frightened at the direction of our country that I do lose sleep over it… I worry for my family, my friends and my future. This is not what America is about. I just wish that more people who supported this man would step up and admit that they have the same fears and concerns… I am very certain that we are facing a crisis of historic proportions.”

Doug Blevins, former Wilton Manors mayoral candidate, on Facebook

“The Supreme Court has missed an opportunity to end the painful discrimination currently faced by tens of thousands of transgender students nationwide.”

Eliza Byard, executive director for GLSEN (pronounced “glisten”), the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe and affirming school for LGBTQ students.

Cast of the Amazon Original Series “Transparent” Releases PSA Urging Support for Gavin Grimm

PSA Features Testimonials with Cast Members Including Jeffrey Tambor and Judith Light, Urging Americans to #StandWithGavin

The cast of the multi-Emmy and Golden Globe-Award winning Amazon Original series “Transparent” today released a Public Service Announcement (PSA) urging support for Gavin Grimm, a transgender high school student whose lawsuit against his school board over their refusal to allow him to use the boys’ restroom helped bring the fight for transgender rights and basic human dignity to the national stage.
Although the case was sent back to the federal appeals court earlier this week, the case has helped build awareness and illustrate the widespread support for transgender people.

The PSA continues to illuminate how important Gavin’s case has become as a rallying point for Americans everywhere, and features the testimony and heartfelt reflections of “Transparent” cast members including Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light, Jay Duplass, Gaby Hoffmann, Trace Lysette and Alexandra Billings, as well as creator Jill Soloway.
“The cast and crew of “Transparent” are deeply connected to the trans civil rights movement,” said Zackary Drucker, director of the PSA and producer of “Transparent”. “While in the thick of Season 4 production, our entire team made it a priority to rally around Gavin and express solidarity with trans youth everywhere; it was incredibly inspiring.”

The idea for the PSA emerged from conversations between Zackary Drucker, (“Transparent”) and Chase Strangio (ACLU) discussing ways to amplify Grimm’s case.  Several “Transparent” trans and gender non-conforming crew members spearheaded production, including Drucker (director) Rain Valdez (producer) and Mel Mel Sukekawa-Mooring (editor).
“Through this labor of love, the “Transparent” team continues illustrating the breadth of incredible support that exists virtually everywhere for Gavin and the transgender community,” said James Esseks, director of ACLU’s LGBT Project. “We are continuing this fight through the court system and in the streets, fueled by the support and work of people in every corner of this nation to ensure the rights and dignity of trans people are respected.”
“On ‘Transparent’ we come to work with a feeling of gratitude, and we are united by our duty to serve the LGBT community,” continued Drucker. “We seek ways of being supportive and actionable, and since so many of us were trans youth not long ago, we feel an acute responsibility to protect both future generations and the hurt children within us.”
The PSA adds to the growing number of voices from across the country that has come out in support of Gavin. Last week, individuals and institutions from across the country representing a diverse and extraordinary cross-section of interests, perspectives, and concerns rallied behind Gavin by filing friend-of-court briefs with the Supreme Court, just days before the court sent the case back to the federal court of appeals.
In recent weeks, Gavin’s case has been highlighted by a number of leading figures in the entertainment world, including Laverne Cox’s mention of Gavin on stage at the Grammys as well as his story being featured on a number of national television programs including “The Daily Show,” “The Ellen Show,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “The View,” and many others.

Miami Beach Gay Pride Announces Marshals For 2017

Honoring Four Individuals Who Significantly Contribute to the LGBT Community

For the first time in its nine-year history, Miami Beach Gay Pride will honor four individuals who have made significant contributions to the LGBT community as Pride Marshals. Television personality and pop culture expert Ross Mathews will serve as Grand Marshal; celebrity bartender and cast member of iHeart Radio’s “Elvis Duran and the Morning Show,” “Uncle” Johnny Pool, will serve as the Advocate Marshal; and philanthropists and advocates Liebe and Seth Gadinsky will serve as Ally Marshals. Miami Beach Gay Pride is presented by Celebrity Cruises and runs April 7 to 9, 2017.
“We are really proud to expand our Marshal program this year,” said Mark Fernandes, chair of the Pride board. “As an organization and an event, it is critical that we embody the diversity and inclusiveness of the entire community we serve. We can think of no better way to live up to that promise than by celebrating the accomplishments and efforts of these four outstanding leaders.”

Openly gay comedian, TV host and author Ross Mathews will serve as Miami Beach Gay Pride’s Grand Marshal leading the loud and colorful parade that’s expected to draw over 130,000 spectators this year. Mathews is a strong supporter of the Human Rights Campaign, speaking at many of their nationwide events and receiving their Visibility Award in 2011. He has hosted the GLAAD Media Awards, officiated a same-sex marriage from a float in the middle of Capital Pride in Washington D.C., and recently produced a widely hailed video response to a personally degrading comment made by Milo Yiannopoulos during his resignation press conference as senior editor at Breitbart.

Of his video response, The Advocate later reported: “Knowing he can be an example for kids across the world who don’t have positive role models is what drives him most, (Mathews)  went on to say, ‘I’m afraid that the kids like me out there now will see his message and not my message. So I want every kid out there who is different, who feels different, who knows that they’re different to know that that’s good.’”
Mathews entered the public psyche as “Ross the Intern,” a correspondent on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” Currently, Mathews can be seen hosting the nationally syndicated daily entertainment talk show “Hollywood Today Live,” which was just renewed for its second season. He’s part of the E! Network’s red carpet commentary team and has guest judged on “Ru Paul’s Drag Race.”

In addition to his work on television, Mathews can be heard weekly on his top rated podcast “Straight Talk with Ross Mathews” [PodcastOne] where he gives his hilarious take on the latest entertainment news and gossip.

In 2013, Mathews released his first book, “Man Up: Tales of My Delusional Self-Confidence” [Grand Central Publishing], which quickly became a national bestseller. “Man Up” takes readers inside Mathews’ personal journey from coming out to his family, to becoming a super fan, while revealing the most embarrassing and hysterical moments of his small town life and big city adventures. It chronicles his journey of how he managed to turn an obsession with pop culture into one-on-one interactions with A-List celebrities.

“Uncle” Johnny Pool is a legendary bartender who bartended at the world-famous Stonewall Inn in the 1960s. He was an active participant in the Stonewall Riots, widely credited as the beginning of the equal rights movement, and has since fought for the equality of all human beings regardless of sexuality or skin tone. The Advocate Marshal, new for 2017, honors an individual who has fought tirelessly for LGBTQ equal rights.

Pool got his start bartending in Cherry Grove on Fire Island where he has worked for over 53 years. His career began at The Beach Hotel & Club in Cherry Grove in 1964, which would later become The Ice Palace. He currently works at Cherry’s on the Bay and is celebrating his 17th year this summer. With over 53 consecutive years bartending at the legendary LGBTQ summer destination, Pool has seen it all. Now he can be heard as the oldest living intern on “Elvis Duran and the Morning Show,” the #1 top 40 radio show in the country, where he bartends on a weekly basis. Johnny is best known on the show for his infectious greeting, “Hello Lady”, as well as his sometimes irreverent knock-knock jokes.
To celebrate “Uncle Johnny” and his decades of fighting for equal rights, Miami Beach Gay Pride will turn one the bars in Lummus Park into Cherry’s on the Bay and Pool will make special appearances at the bar to mix his favorite cocktail recipes. Bartenders throughout the Pride Festival will also wear “Hello Lady” buttons.

Also new for 2017, the Allied Marshal pays tribute to LGBTQ-allied individuals who have championed social justice and human rights. Liebe and Seth Gadinsky have devoted over two decades to advancing social justice. Seth serves on, and formerly chaired, the board of the Anti-Defamation League in Florida. Liebe is dedicated to building community through her volunteer efforts, having distinguished herself as a strong supporter and advocate for human rights. Through her volunteer work for SAVE (Safeguarding American Values for Everyone), she worked tirelessly to help pass and defend the Miami-Dade Human Rights Ordinance. She served on the Board of The Miami Foundation and its GLBT Community Projects Fund Advisory Board. Liebe currently serves on the board of the National LGBTQ Task Force and formerly served as the first straight ally to chair the board. Additionally, she has spent the last 10 years helping ensure the success of the Task Force Gala – Miami. Together, Seth and Liebe are passionate supporters of myriad LGBT organizations in Miami-Dade and beyond.

Ross Miam Beach Gay Pride 2017

Since its inception in 2009, Miami Beach Gay Pride has grown from a neighborhood event to an event on the global stage with A-list celebrities such as Elvis Duran as Grand Marshal in 2016 and Jordin Sparks as headline entertainer. Mario Lopez was Grand Marshal in 2015, Gloria Estefan was Grand Marshal in 2014 and Adam Lambert performed in 2013. Attendance has grown as well. An estimated 15,000 spectators turned out for the first Pride parade in 2009; an estimated 130,000 attended the event in 2016, which attracted not only South Floridians, but also visitors from throughout the world. In addition to Parade spectators, last April’s event included more than 65 parade contingencies, 35 floats and 2,700 participants. The Pride Festival which followed featured more than 100 LGBTQ-friendly vendors and businesses, plus refreshments, two stages of entertainment, a family-friendly play area and fireworks. Recently, Miami Beach Gay Pride was named one of the “Top 100 Events of the Year” for the third year in a row by BizBash Magazine and earned the Pink Flamingo Award as favorite multi-day event for the fourth year in a row.
For 2017, Miami Beach Gay Pride will be a full, three-day weekend, April 7 – 9, and will include a Friday night VIP Reception, Saturday beach party and festival, and Sunday parade and festival.

Miami Beach Gay Pride is produced with the support of the Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority.  In addition to Celebrity Cruises as the presenting sponsor, other sponsors include: 1015 Multimedia; AHF; Ambiente / Unity Coalition; Artfood Staffing & Hospitality; Atlantic Broadband; Bank of America; Barefoot Wine & Bubbly; Bayou Rum; BB&T; Brown-Forman; Blick Art Materials; Chase; City of Miami Beach; Coca-Cola; Crunch; Craig Zinn Automotive Group; CVSHealth; Delmay and Partners; Fertility & IVF Center of Miami; G.H.
