March 31 Announced as St. Pete Transgender Day of Visibility

Mayor Rick Kriseman issued a proclamation declaring March 31st, 2018 as Transgender Day of Visibility in St. Petersburg, a holiday which celebrates transgender representation, activism, and equality.

The mayor honored this international holiday locally because he felt it was crucial to honor the bravery of the many transgender individuals who live, work, or play in their authentic gender in the Sunshine City.

“We reaffirm our commitment to promote the full inclusion of transgender individuals in our community,” Mayor Kriseman stated while reading the proclamation in front of city council. Nathan Bruemmer, TransAction Florida advisory board member, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the transgender community of St. Petersburg. “There always comes a moment in history when a community can choose to stand in unity. This is that moment, and I am so proud that my community chose to unite. We still have work to do, but taking this stance says so much to so many. Thank you Mayor, thank you St. Petersburg.”

Also in attendance was St. Pete Pride Interim Executive Director Luke Blankenship. St. Pete City Council members Darden Rice and Gina Driscoll gave statements of support.

Ten Trendy Kitchen & Bath Upgrades

  1. Free Style

Because we’re spending more and more time in our kitchens and baths, there is a move away from the all-or-nothing “fitted” look of continuous counters. Look for more freestanding pieces of furniture or features with furniture like qualities, such as a cabriole leg holding up a kitchen counter. These details won’t be fussy but will further the notion that the kitchen and bath aren’t just for utilitarian cooking and bathing, but are for living.

  1. Artistic Upgrades

In the ongoing effort to customize our kitchens, almost anything goes. Now range hoods are works of art, literally. Already beautiful as well as functional, hoods can now be customized with panels you choose. Cupboard doors can be replaced with accent doors. Want a new backsplash? It’s as simple as applying DIY stainless tiles or installing a ready-to-hang piece of tile art. You can go from dull to dramatic, tired to trendy, in just a few minutes.

  1. Asian Fusion

With international style so popular at home, it’s no wonder that the Asian influence is still going strong in the kitchen, where Asian cooking is all the rage, and in the bathroom, where there is nothing like Zen comforts to help us unwind. Look for drawer pulls reminiscent of bamboo, built-in teriyaki grills and Japanese-style sliding pantry doors in the kitchen. In the bath, calming touches such as a deep soaking tub, a waterfall in the shower and vessel sinks with sleek wall-mounted hardware say Zen with a capital “Z.”

  1. Going Green

Eco-friendly products aren’t going to go out of style anytime soon. And now there are more ways that you can go green in the bathroom and kitchen, too, from energy-efficient dishwashers (that use less water than when you wash by hand), to environmentally sound flooring options made of reclaimed wood and tiles. Ann Sacks even makes a rugged tile from river rocks.

  1. Oh-So-Organic

Forget straight lines and right angles. From egg-shaped bathtubs and round bathroom bowls to curvy kitchen and vanity counters, organic shapes are in. Even toilets, like Kohler’s oval offering called The Purist, which features no exposed plumbing, seems rooted to the ground as if it grew there. Not only are the shapes pleasing, they also encourage a more natural circular traffic flow. Imagine never bumping into a sharp corner again.

  1. Drawer Designs

Move over refrigerator drawers and dishwasher drawers, and say hello to the microwave drawer. Yes, that handy appliance, popcorn button and all, now comes in a drawer. What’s the big deal with drawers in the kitchen? As the kitchen has become the hub of the home, there’s a move to break up the big expanses of appliances and cut the clutter.

  1. High Tech

Advances in technology continue to offer us out-of-this-world options, from a TV embedded in a bathroom mirror to an oven that can be programmed to keep your food cold until it’s cooking time. You can even change the cooking directions from your office computer. Don’t have enough freezer space? High-tech progress can help you turn a fridge drawer into a freezer in no time. It can also raise the toilet seat when it sees you coming and clean the shower when you’re not around.

  1. Built-Ins

Built-ins are convenient and sleek, two must-haves in today’s kitchens. Think steamers and strainers, high-end coffeemakers, professional ice machines and wine coolers, knife racks, spice holders, ring holders, fondue pots, ice beds for shrimp and much, much more.

  1. Glass Acts

Glass is everywhere in today’s kitchens and baths, from recycled and Depression-era glass tiles to opaque glass on cooktops, refrigerators and cabinet doors. Glass mosaic tiles, Venetian glass light fixtures, translucent glass sink: They all add light and drama.

  1. Bathroom as Refuge

Yes, we are doing more in our bathrooms these days than just brushing our teeth. Watch for showers that offer aromatherapy, hydrotherapy and color therapy, and envision refrigerated vanity drawers for storing those refreshing tub-side beverages. With heated towel racks, suede or leather drawer pulls and stereo surround sound, the bathroom is truly a sanctuary for the senses.

Lifestyle Design in Kitchen & Bath

The key to creating a kitchen or bath that wows clients and sells product is to design around the way people really use their space. “It’s about how they live,” says Sarah Fishburne, manager of innovation and design at The Home Depot.

Fishburne offers this list of suggestions and considerations for the aspiring “lifestyle designer”

In the Kitchen

  • Bakers and gourmet chefs have differing needs. For one thing, they want different types of stoves. The baker doesn’t care so much about the range but wants an upgraded oven. The baker also needs a pop-up mixing stand for the heavy-duty mixer. On the other hand, the chef wants a wok, a griddle or a slow-simmer burner for cooking specialty dishes.
  • Choosing the right appliances gives the kitchen a custom look. As people move toward healthier lifestyles, steamers are becoming more popular. New ideas include convection ovens and induction cooktops, and they’re coming down in price, which makes them accessible to a wider market.
  • Refrigeration has gone vertical. Twenty-four-inch refrigerators and freezers allow much more design flexibility—they can be placed where they’re needed. And they’re moderate on energy use.
  • If a homeowner entertains a lot and has multiple serving platters and dinner plates that are larger than the standard 12 inches, customize a space for them. Older cabinets just don’t have the width to accommodate them.
  • You can go light in terms of add-ons, or you can go to the extreme. Raising and lowering countertop heights can provide optimal access for kids and for adults who require different levels for maximum comfort.
  • For those limited to small changes, keep the cabinets and change out the countertops. Use different finishes on the island and the perimeter. For a baker, try marble in one area and quartz surfacing everywhere else.

In the Bath

  • At the extreme end of luxury, couples are carving out his-and-her bath suites that include dual vanities. His might be in a darker wood tone, while hers is lighter and more feminine.
  • Many new and remodeled master baths include fully tiled walls and floors, often outfitted with in-floor radiant heat. This additional amenity can be programmed to turn on and off at certain times of the day, minimizing the amount of energy required.
  • Some homeowners prefer showers, and the new power assemblies feature multiple showerheads. These can be grouped in a tower or arranged on the walls and ceiling. Some require upgraded plumbing.
  • Soaking tubs, some with water-overflow features, create the ultimate indulgence. Today’s soakers are better-designed and have more features, including air jets, aromatherapy and chromatherapy. And in most cases, people are really using them.
  • Little changes can make a big difference. Use more ambient lighting, or add towel warmers. Both create a spa-like atmosphere and add a pampering touch.

Q&A: ArtsUnited Featured Artist Anthony Collier Noel

Join ArtsUnited for their April Artist Mixer featuring Adam Collier Noel on Thursday, April 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bona Italian Restaurant, 2468 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. Noel is an award-winning photography-based mixed media artist. His work relies heavily on the appropriation of vintage imagery and their relationship to the contemporary world through the lens of popular culture. His artwork will be displayed throughout the month of April. Portions of the art sales go to support ArtsUnited.  Become a member of ArtsUnited during the event and get 20% off membership. There will also be silent auction items at the event.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Adam for this Hotspots exclusive interview.

At what age did you pick up your first camera and tell us about that experience?

As a young man I always had my 35mm Canon camera documenting friends and family, but over time I became more interested in vintage photographs taken by other people and began combing thrift stores and antique malls for found images I could incorporate into my artwork. My collection of original vintage snapshots is now the subject matter for my mixed-media creations

Did you have any formal training in photography?

I have a Bachelor of fine arts degree in photography and have explored a variety of mediums including sculpture, installation and painting. Currently my work is focused on fusing collage with photography using paper ephemera and photographic transfers of vintage snapshots as the subject matter. In particular, my focus is on portraits of men from a bygone era who ultimately reflect personal and universal narratives. There is a history, sincerity and energy captured in these discarded memories that I want to celebrate.

When did you realize that photography/art would be your career?

I always knew making art would be my career and have exhibited and sold my work with galleries in Provincetown, Indianapolis, Calgary and South Florida and during Art Week Miami.

Who are your mentors in photography and why?

All working artists are my mentors. I love meeting creative people who are navigating the art world and making it work for them. I read blogs, watch how-to videos, and find anything that inspires me to be a better artist. Being an artist is all about evolution and involvement in community.

Describe your photographic style?

My artwork could be described as photography-based, mixed-media collage with an edge. I like the work to be a little messy. I want viewers to see the energy I put into the pieces, so I don’t want them to be too pristine

What does the future hold for you?

Looking forward I know I will continue my work as a studio artist in tandem with a career in the arts. I’ve always worked in galleries and photography studios and equally love art consultation, curation and working with other artists. It is a passion that only gets stronger.

Q&A: Deborah Cox Talks ‘The Bodyguard’ The Musical

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and Broadway Across America are delighted to announce that the first U.S. national tour of the hit musical The Bodyguard will play at the Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House from April 3 to 8.

Grammy Award-nominated and multi-platinum R&B/pop recording artist and film/TV actress Deborah Cox** stars as Rachel Marron. In the role of bodyguard Frank Farmer is television star Judson Mills.

Based on Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscar-nominated Warner Bros. film and adapted by Academy Award winner (Birdman) Alexander Dinelaris, The Bodyguard had its world premiere on December 5, 2012 at London’s Adelphi Theatre. The Bodyguard was nominated for four Laurence Olivier Awards including Best New Musical and Best Set Design and won Best New Musical at the Whatsonstage Awards.

Former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge; what they don’t expect is to fall in love. A romantic thriller, The Bodyguard features a host of irresistible classics including So Emotional, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love, Run to You, I Have Nothing, I Wanna Dance with Somebody and one of the biggest-selling songs of all time – I Will Always Love You.

Rounding out the principal cast are Alex Corrado (Gotham, Hannibal) as Tony Scibelli, Rachel’s personal security guard; Charles Gray (Broadway: The Color Purple, Tour: The Lion King) as manager Bill Devaney; Jonathan Hadley (Broadway: Jersey Boys, A Class Act) as publicist Sy Spector; Jorge Paniagua (Regional: The Full Monty, Oregon Shakespeare Festival) as the Stalker; Jasmin Richardson (Tour: Memphis, Dreamgirls) as Rachel’s sister Nicki Marron, Mark McCollough Thomas (NYC: Consent, Godforsaken) as FBI agent Ray Court, and Kevelin B. Jones III (Idlewild Music Festival) and Sebastian Maynard-Palmer (Tour: Kinky Boots) alternating in the role of Rachel’s son Fletcher.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Deborah Cox for this Hotspots exclusive interview:

WATCH:

Were you always a performer even as a child or when did it start?

It started when I was 11 doing different talent shows and other things, and then I went to a performing arts high school.

What was your first professional gig?

It was my first commercial, and it was for Marvelous Muffins. I was paid $50.

When did you know singing/performing would be your career?

Probably when I was in high school. I was the one that was always tired in first period as I had a gig the night before. It was somewhere around 17.

You have collaborated with many artists. Do you have a favorite and why?

My favorite is the duet I did with Whitney Houston. The reason for that is I felt like everything came full circle for me as an artist. Growing up I looked up to and admired her so much!

You have received many awards for your efforts in the fight for human rights. What made you decide to use your fame for this cause and has this been rewarding for you?

It’s been really rewarding as it came out of purely organic situations. I had lost a few friends from AIDS, and I had other gay and lesbian friends who were shamed and kicked out of their family’s homes. This made me want to speak up on human rights issues, and I have never stopped!

Your Broadway debut was in Aida, how did this come about and tell us about the experience?

I was literally in between albums and had just given birth to my son. The producers were looking for a new AIDA and I just went for it, and got cast. It rekindled my love for Musical Theater which I had done prior to my albums.

How did you get cast in ‘The Bodyguard’?

The creative team approached me about doing the show years ago. They wanted me to consider doing the us national tour. I fell in love with the script because it stayed true to the story.

What should the South Florida audiences expect from the touring company of ‘The Bodyguard’?

They should expect to come and have a good time. It’s a suspenseful thriller, a romance and has amazing choreography and a great cast of actors that bring the story to life. I think people will be pleasantly surprised on how entertaining it is.

For more information on The Bodyguard, go to: thebodyguardmusical.com.

Tickets to The Bodyguard are available through the Arsht Center Box Office in person at 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami, FL 33132, by calling 305.949.6722, or online at arshtcenter.org. Ticket prices start at $29.

**Deborah Cox is not scheduled to perform at the Saturday matinee performance.

Six Exercise Habits to Keep You Fit & Happy

Everyone agrees that regular exercise is an essential part of life. Besides looking and feeling better, people who exercise daily report having more energy, less anxiety and depression, and a better outlook on life! So why is it so difficult for so many folks to commit to a regular fitness lifestyle? There are millions of excuses, some are pretty valid, others kind of lame, but as I tell clients, when you really want to do something badly enough, you will make it happen. Here are six easy habits that will help you get fit, stay fit and keep you happy!

Turn exercise into a fun activity. You don’t have to pump iron for hours or snort away endlessly on a tread-mill to stay lean and mean. Regular weights and cardio are necessary, but really fit people participate in all kinds of activities to keep themselves in shape. Power walking, swimming, yoga, martial arts, tennis, cycling and a whole array of different activities can also build muscles and maintain a healthy heart. Why not have fun and be adventurous!

Make exercise a social activity. Working out with friends can keep you competitive and on track. Having a trainer to answer to on a regular basis at a scheduled time will keep you consistent and accountable. Zumba, bowling, running, and aerobics classes are all social activities where you can get fit and meet and socialize with fun and upbeat people.

Exercise must be a major priority in your life. Whether you work out in the morning or hit the gym on your way home after work, make sure that you don’t put your workouts and fitness activities on the back burner. Regular exercise is just as essential to your life as any business meeting or conference call.

Don’t make excuses. Too pooped to exercise? Not a good reason!  You need to grab a nap before you hit the gym after work? Chances are you’ll stay sacked out on the sofa long after the gym has closed. You’ll feel more rejuvenated if you can just get to the gym, track or pool rather that succumb to fatigue. During exercise, you’ll breathe deeply as you process more O2. Your body also produces stress busting hormones that’ll give you that exercise “high”.

Keep an exercise journal. Bigger muscles, less body fat, better sleep, more energy, lower resting heart rate and glowing reports from your doctor are a few things you’ll have to look forward to in the near future.

Reward yourself. Getting fit and staying fit is hard work. Positive reinforcement does wonders for keeping you motivated. Whether it’s a new bathing suit or a long overdue vacation cruise, make sure that you celebrate your accomplishments and reward yourself for making fitness your ongoing lifestyle!

Betsy DeVos: ‘I’m More Misunderstood than Anything’

On Twitter the thing I probably write most often is “Betsy DeVos is a monster” in reply to stories about her.

Now, if you don’t know much about DeVos you might be thinking, “Okay, I get that you don’t agree with her policies, but she’s not an actual monster.”

To which I say, “Oh, she is.”

After all, one of the worst things a person can do is to hurt children. And DeVos hurts children like it’s her job. Because it is.

Or, rather, that’s what she’s chosen to do as the Secretary of Education under Donald Trump.

Granted, she’s not physically hurting kids. But she also doesn’t seem particularly interested in stopping kids from getting hurt, or killed for that matter.

After the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, I couldn’t help but notice how totally absent DeVos was. Especially since the students there became household names fighting for gun control and refusing to accept that they were acceptable collateral damage in this country’s obsession with guns.

True, DeVos did visit the school, but the students said she basically “pet a dog and left,” in reference to the therapy dogs that had been brought to campus to help the grieving students and faculty return to school.

To most people, the idea of guns in school is completely insane. The vast majority of Americans are like, “GTFO with that.”

But not DeVos.

“[Teachers having guns in the classroom] should be an option for states and communities to consider,” she told Lesley Stahl during a 60 Minutes interview. And I hesitate to think of, like, my first-grade teacher, Mrs. Zorhoff, I couldn’t ever imagine her having a gun and being trained in that way. But for those who are — who are capable, this is one solution that can and should be considered. But no one size fits all. Every state and every community is going to address this issue in a different way.”

To which DeVos sadly did not add, “And since anyone who supports such a thing has no business having anything to do with schools, I hereby resign on national TV.”

When Stahl asked DeVos what she’s actually DOING about gun violence, DeVos said she’s going to “head up a task force,” which corporate speak for, “Nothing.”

Stahl asked DeVos what accomplishments she’s most proud of as Ed Secretary, and DeVos said, “We’ve begun looking at and rolling back a lot of the overreach of the federal government in education.”

And while “overreach” sounds bad, the things DeVos has been working to roll back include the Obama administration’s guidance for restroom use by transgender students, which dared suggest that trans students be allowed to use the restroom that corresponds with their gender identity.

DeVos also wanted to remind Obama guidance on “discriminatory discipline,” which is the problem of great disparities in the severity and frequency of discipline dished out to white and black students. When Stahl asked if this was an example of institutional racism, Devos basically shrugged it off.

She’s also revamped the Title IX guidelines for handling college sexual assault. As CBS News puts it, “She’s allowing colleges to require stronger evidence from accusers, and give the accused a greater benefit of the doubt.”

Imagine that, a Trump Administration official who thinks that sexual assault victims have it too easy when it comes to reporting their assaults.

During the 60 Minutes interview, Stahl asked DeVos why people hate her so much.

“I’m more misunderstood than anything,” she replied.

Huh. If she thinks she’s misunderstood, imagine how being a transgender student who needs to use the bathroom feels.

Did I mention that DeVos is a monster?

Behind the Scenes: Hotspots’ Cover Model Shoot

Palm Beach Pride 2018

On March 24th and 25th, thousands of people will flock to Lake Worth’s Bryant Park for a two-day celebration of pride in the LGBTQ community. The festival (formerly known as Pridefest) will also serve as the launch of Compass’ 30 year anniversary.

In 1988, a concerned group of men and women joined together to form the Stop AIDS Project of South Florida, Inc. Their goal was to educate individuals on the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS and provide direct services to those already living with the virus. In the years that followed, in response to changing needs, the group reformed as Compass and its purpose expanded to provide a focal point for LGBTQ community engagement and support.

The two-day event sees people of all ages and backgrounds join together in celebration. The highlight of the weekend is the mile-long LGBTQ Pride Parade that takes place on March 25th and will feature SMART Ride founders Glen Weinzimer and John Rogatzki as Grand Marshals. Led by the Wells Fargo Stage Coach, thousands of people, organizations and businesses participate in the parade as it winds its way through Downtown Lake Worth into Bryant Park. This year’s Pride Parade theme is “Rainbow Resistance” as a response to the current political climate and its infringement on the forward progress of the LGBTQ community.

“Pride is the biggest weekend of the year to unite, celebrate, and support our community, and we are grateful to all of the people and organizations who participate and make it happen,” said Julia Murphy, Chief Development Officer.

The annual Pride weekend festivities, sponsored in part by Wells Fargo, the SMART Ride, CAN Community Health and PNC Bank, include over 100 vendors , art exhibits, and great food. This year’s entertainment will feature U.S. Billboard Play Artist CeCe Peniston, Scarlett Santana from the group C+C Music Factory, and singer Sammulous from America’s Got Talent. Emceed by Melissa St. John and RaeJean Cox, Pride entertainment will also include local celebrities from the KVJ show on 97.9 WRMF, as well as international DJ Citizen Jane, and Velvet Lenore.

The festival exemplifies the strength and growth of the LGBTQ community by highlighting local businesses that stand by our community and welcome our business. More importantly, Palm Beach Pride emphasizes the importance of diversity in the community, making that community stronger and more accepting of all individuals and their contributions to society. Without a doubt, Palm Beach Pride exists as an important component of Compass’ efforts to create a safe place to live and allows for more effective local advocacy. The event has now grown from a small gathering to one of the largest festivals in South Florida.

Q&A: ‘Disney on Ice Presents Reach For the Stars’

Deep Inside Hollywood

Ryan Murphy’s “Pose” places trans actors front and center

If we can all survive as a nation until summer, “Pose” will be here to see us through. The latest TV series from mega-creator Ryan Murphy is set in mid-’80s New York City and will dive deeply into the world of underground ball culture, so memorably depicted in the documentaries “Paris is Burning” and “Kiki.” There are the usual famous faces attached to the show, people like Kate Mara, Billy Porter and James Van Der Beek. But if we’re being honest, the real thrill is going to be the sheer number of transgender actors who’ll be taking their shot on the show. Mj Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Dominique Jackson, Hailie Sahar and Angelica Ross, most of whom are first-timers or at least in the early stages of their acting careers, will collectively make “Pose” the show with the most trans actors playing trans characters in TV history. Verdict: we’re watching. We don’t even care if it’s good like early “Glee” or terrible like later “Glee”. We’re watching.

Lee Pace goes back to the future

Recently, Lee Pace came out as bisexual – to the best of our ability to interpret his statement, that is – and he did so in that way that celebrities who’d rather not be asked too many questions about much of anything come out, by calling the interviewer “intrusive.” (We like to think we had him sorted all the way back to “Soldier’s Girl” and “Wonderfalls,” well before Ian McKellen accidentally outed him, but that’s just us thinking we have special powers of observation.) Oh well, we’re still glad to have him on board and we assume he’ll get used to being publicly queer soon enough. Meanwhile, he’s got a new project, one that takes the idea of scandal back to a more innocent, less jaded, pre-Trump era, when most celebrities didn’t come out at all, and when a famous man getting busted for cocaine and other crimes was a big deal and we were all bummed about it because it meant that the “Back to the Future” car wasn’t going to be as big a deal as we’d hoped. The film is called “Driven” and Mr. Pace will play none other than John DeLorean, inventor of that iconic, now vintage-cool vehicle, a man who also got involved with crime and cocaine and sent it all crashing down. It also stars Judy Greer, Jason Sudeikis and Corey Stole, so we’re pretty much here for it right now, even though it’s due later in 2018.

Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are ready to reboot “9 to 5”

The plan is for Patricia Resnick – the original screenwriter – and Rashida Jones (“Parks and Recreation”) to write it. The plan is for three new young women to star in it. But the plan we care most about for the in-talks reboot of “9 to 5” is that Dolly, Jane and Lily are all on board. This is probably the best news of 2018 so far, and if you don’t agree then we don’t know you and you don’t know us. “9 to 5”, for you young people, is the classic 1980 comedy about women fighting workplace harassment and discrimination. It also gave the world the great Dolly Parton hit song of the same name. And given the current movement of women in the workplace demanding better treatment, what better time to reboot? The young women haven’t been cast yet, but they will find more than capable mentors in the O.G. nine-to-fivers. Can’t wait, obviously, but Dolly’s the one with the best public statement on the matter. She advised production to pick up the pace: “I told them we better get after it or it’s going to be “95.”” Indeed.

Denis O’Hare, Anna Kendrick get untitled for now

OK, maybe this one is a bit obscure if you don’t follow British comedy, but if you do then you know the name Christopher Morris is one to trust. The wicked comic genius behind shows like “Brass Eye,” “The Day Today” and “Nathan Barley,” and director of the blistering terrorism comedy “Four Lions” – yes, we said terrorism comedy – has a new film in the works. It is currently without a title and we know nothing about its content. We do know that it stars Anna Kendrick, gay actor Denis O’Hare (“True Blood”), “Orange is the New Black” actor Danielle Brooks, and one of our fave queer stand-up comedians James Adomian (“BoJack Horseman”). But that’s plenty to go on for now. It could star sock puppets, frankly, and we’d still give it our full attention. So while we’re waiting around for a title, go investigate Mr. Morris’ earlier work. You’ll be glad – and possibly unsettled and disturbed – that you did.

Romeo San Vicente believes in Huey Lewis-style Power of Love.

Food For Thought: The Pub Wilton Manors

With a mix of locals and tourists, the social atmosphere of The Pub is the perfect gathering spot to grab a bite to eat, relax with a cocktail and people watch. Since its opening in 2012, The Pub (formerly known as Village Pub) has not only established itself as a gathering place for people from all walks of life; however, with the reopening of their kitchen and a remodel that included many more tables, they are also establishing themselves as a new eatery on the drive. Whether you’re looking to nosh on something to soak up the liquor, like their Nachos ($10), or are looking to chow down on a burger, The Pub’s menu offers something that even the pickiest of eaters will enjoy!

My boyfriend and I visited The Pub on a Friday night, and boy was it packed…it was only 8pm and there was only standing room! Once we found a table, we ordered drinks and jammed out to the 80s music that was blasting while we looked over the menu. The first items we noticed were the Charcuterie ($12) and Bloody Mary Shrimp Cocktail ($11) appetizers.  We were pleasantly surprised by the presentation and portion size of each when they arrived at the table. The Charcuterie, a variety of Artisan meats and cheeses, was served on a newspaper lined tray with buttered crostini, whole grain mustard, roasted red peppers and gherkin pickles. The numerous combinations of the different meats and cheeses will have your taste buds wanting more! Being served in a martini glass, the Bloody Mary Shrimp Cocktail had heads turning as it made its way to the table. From the jumbo Tiger shrimp poached in a citrus Old Bay broth to the Bloody Mary cocktail sauce that fills the bottom of the glass, this appetizer proves that martinis are not the only happiness served in that glass!

Once we ordered our main dishes, which I’ll talk about in a minute, my eyes were pulled back to the appetizers section of the menu. If you like warm balls in your mouth (insert the typical gay pun here haha), then their Pretzel Bites ($7) are right up your alley. Let me start this off by saying that this is probably their BEST appetizer!! The bite-sized pretzel balls are roasted with butter and sea salt and served with cheese on the side…in other words, they are HEAVEN!

After all that, we had some room left for the entrees somehow. We chose the Chicken Tenders ($10) and the Italian Chicken Sandwich ($10). We opted for the grilled tenders (you can also get them fried), and they were cooked to perfection. These juicy tenders were served with fresh, hand-cut fries and BBQ, Dijon Honey Mustard, Ranch, Blue Cheese or hot sauce. The sandwich was huge and consisted of grilled chicken breast, mozzarella cheese and pesto aioli on a toasted hoagie roll. A generous portion of their hand-cut fries complete this dish of deliciousness!

The Pub has also been very supportive of the local community by hosting fundraisers for charities such as Kids in Distress, The Pet Project, the AIDS Walk, The Smart Ride, Poverello, as well as many other local charitable organizations and sporting associations such as softball and bowling.

Although they are open until 2am Sunday thru Thursday and until 3am on Friday and Saturday, The Pub’s kitchen closes at 9pm, so get there early and grab a table. Valet parking is available, which means you don’t have to fight for parking on those crowded nights on the drive!

From drag shows to game shows to music from your favorite Broadway shows, The Pub always has something going on throughout the week. Stop on in, grab some food and see what all the hype is about. You never know who you may meet at The Pub! Don’t forget to tell them HotSpots! sent you!
