Kelly Chameleon: An Interview with Kelly Osbourne

Osbourne rebel on being open to dating women (‘never say never’), celebs who fake gay and mom Sharon sneaking her into a drag club

Hollywood spitfire and staunch LGBT ally Kelly Osbourne is feeling tense about her first book, “There Is No F*cking Secret: Letters from a Badass Bitch.” After all, “What if I change my opinion by the time it comes out?!” she says, laughing because it’s true (Photos: Darren Tieste).

Then there’s our revealing interview, where the opinionated 32-year-old actress, singer and now author – and daughter of Ozzy and Sharon – let her candid thoughts loose on topics ranging from her sexuality (“everybody’s gay”) to her openness about dating women and her issues with celebrities who feign lesbianism for publicity. And that recent controversy over her statement regarding President Donald Trump? She admits it really got to her. Turns out, even badasses cry sometimes.

Kelly, your book, which covers your personal journey to self-acceptance, could have a positive influence on so many young people trying to find themselves.

Oh, thank you so much! It’s the most vulnerable thing I’ve done in a while, I can’t lie. I’m kind of like, oh my god, I’ve actually done this, because for the first time in my life I wanted to take my power back, and instead of people telling me who I am, I wanted to tell them.

Who are some of your favorite badass bitches?

I mean, Elton goes without sayin’. Just people who’ve made a difference in my life, like Liza Minnelli. I think Lil’ Kim. It’s anyone who just learned to be themselves and take responsibility for who they are.

When were you first aware you had an LGBT following?

I don’t remember a time in my life when I haven’t been submerged in the LGBT community. It’s the only community that, even though I shouldn’t have belonged (laughs), accepted me. It was the only world I ever really felt comfortable in, because, and I say it in my book, I don’t know what it feels like to fit in.

What do you attribute that bond to?

I think my relationship, especially with the drag community and the drag world, became so prevalent at such a young age because of Boy George, of course, and Blitz Kids and that huge movement in the U.K. I think drag queens choose how they want you to see them and they do that knowing that they’re probably going to get a lot of sh!t for it, and that’s what magic is. That’s like, “F*ck you, this is who I am,” and you can wake up every day and be whoever you want to be. I love that.

When did drag first come into your life?

It’s never NOT been in my life. I mean, my mom was calling up (a drag club) in San Francisco; I was, like, 11 or 12 and being snuck into a drag bar. It was amazing. And there was a time I went to go see Cyndi Lauper on tour when she was playing in the U.K., and she used to have, like, 20 drag queens on tour with her. I was probably about 9 or 10.

You have to understand, my favorite childhood pastime was putting my mom’s lacy underwear and bustier on over my clothes – because I wasn’t allowed to wear them any other way – and going to see “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. “Rocky Horror Picture Show” is still, to this day, one of my favorite movies of all time. I loved the makeup. If you look really closely at the “Time Warp,” you’ll see where I get all my hair colors from. But yeah, everyone else was watching “Annie,” and I was watching “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and singing about sweet transvestites. (Laughs)

How much of your gay submergence do you credit to your mother?

It’s equally my mom AND my dad. In rock ’n’ roll, you were the outcasts back then and outcasts tend to find each other, especially in London.

How about Boy George – what was his influence on you?

I remember staring at my TV, thinking, “Is it a beautiful woman or a beautiful man? It doesn’t matter.” He was the first person to break down barriers. He single-handedly changed people’s perspective so much. And he’s such a smart man! If you ever sit down and have a conversation with him about his political views and his opinion of the gay community, he says things that are so spot on and so important because he’s lived long enough through good times and bad times to see what things really are. I love talking to him. And he has the most beautiful eyes you’ve ever looked into!

You recently wore a hat emblazoned with the words “I Am Gay.” Were you being literal?

You know my honest opinion? Everybody’s gay. It is a strictly human thing. You can’t put a gender on love.

But I know a guy – several of them, in fact – who insists he’s only into women.

Except he’s letting a guy suck his dick! If you ain’t tried it, you don’t get to tell me what you are.

Are you open to loving a woman?

I’m open to loving anybody. It’s about the person. I don’t think it’s about sexuality at all.

Your mother came out as bisexual last year. What have you learned about yourself from her regarding sexuality?

I told her, “Would you be the butch one? Come on, tell me, which one would you be?” Because whether it’s man and man, woman and woman, there’s always a masculine and feminine role. So I’m always like, “Mom, which one would you be?” And she’s like, “Oh, shut up, Kelly!”

But it’s not like I’m trying to be forward-thinking or progressive – it’s just that sexuality is a word I try not to even define the way the world defines it. It’s the person who you are sexually attracted to.

Do you not label your sexuality, then?

My whole rule is, never say never. I’ve never been in a relationship with a woman, but I don’t know that it’s not a possibility. But I also don’t like it when people claim to be gay and then not. There’s this whole generation of young Hollywood girls who can’t find love where they think it’s supposed to be, and then they come out being gay and two weeks later they have a boyfriend. It drives me nuts! I think it takes all the proactive work the LGBT community has done and sets them back. Oh, so now you’re gay? Then two weeks later: “Oh no, that was just a phase.” You don’t get to do that.

I’ll tell you who’s the worst with it: young female celebrities. And I’m like, I know you. I’ve known you pretty much since before you used to sh!t outside of a diaper. You are not gay! But I think outing somebody in that way is just as bad as outing somebody who has not come out of the closet. It’s one of those things I have to keep to myself… and it drives me f%cking crazy! I’ve marched till my feet bled for the right of equal love in the gay community, and you’re just gonna step in because it looks cool for you and now tell everybody that you’re a lesbian when you’ve never even seen another puss that’s not yours so you can get attention?

Where are we at with you having a baby with your gay best friend?

Oh, it’s inevitable. (Laughs) That’s just gonna happen. You know, I was so disappointed that I didn’t have a gay sibling. I was disappointed that I wasn’t gay even! Though I do still think that everybody’s gay, but still.

You’ve been to a lot of LGBT events: Pride with your mom, where you shut down protesters; Elton John’s wedding. What’s the most memorable gay event you’ve been a part of?

Oh my god, that’s so hard to pick! I can’t really think of an event that’s not a gay event. When you really think about it, what major party have you ever been to that was put on by a straight person? Because I can’t think of one.

You tell me. I’m not the one going to Elton John’s birthday party.

It was really fun, actually. (Laughs)

Rub it in.

So, my favorite gay Christmas event is anything with Mariah. She just brings out the best in everyone. Everyone’s crying, being emotional.

I love that you consider a Mariah Carey Christmas concert a “gay event.”

It’s totally a gay event – I mean, have you gone?! It’s so much fun. And I love her. I went to Disneyland with Mariah and we had the best time. It was everything you’d imagine going to Disneyland with Mariah would be. A dream come true.

Late last year, while receiving the Trevor Hero Honoree Award at the Trevor Project’s TrevorLIVE Los Angeles 2016 fundraiser on Dec. 4, during part of your speech you said, “We have to give (Trump) a chance. And we do it by spreading love, not hate.” Do you believe we should still give him a chance?

I think we should give… you have to think about it. If we’re being told the truth, which we never really are, people voted for him, and at that time when I said that he hadn’t been inaugurated yet. I’ve had to stop watching TV when it comes to politics. I only watch – I think you can hear it in the back; I watch BBC News so I can get a different perspective, because in different countries they show you different things that you don’t see here. It’s a really scary time that we’re living in, and I’m not gonna pretend that it isn’t.

What scares you most?

The way that people feel totally lost, don’t feel safe. When people don’t feel safe, it manifests and comes out in evil ways. There’s a lot of evil going around right now when we were finally at a place where people were ready to love. Now people are just ready to point fingers, judge and blame.

I don’t get to vote. I’m still going through the process of citizenship in this country – if it goes through, because I don’t know how things are going to change. I do encourage people to vote, but when we went down to downtown L.A. to check out the marches after the election, I asked people, “Who did you vote for?” Nine times out of 10, people said they didn’t vote. I was so confused! Like, why are you here?

But I have to keep to myself right now because I don’t want to enter into this political cannibalism that’s going on where people say stuff and then everyone just eats you alive for your opinion. Every attempt I have made in defending the (LGBT) community I somehow manage to f#ck it up and piss everyone off. I cried over the backlash of the Donald Trump thing with my speech, because if you read my whole speech, you’d get what I was saying, but they put that one sentence in there and I was like, “You d!cks.”

How are you feeling about where we are headed regarding LGBT rights?

I don’t know – and that’s what’s scary. I mean, I’m sorry, you cannot give somebody the right to marry and then take it away from them. You can’t do that. You just cannot do that. But what I’ve learned right now, because everything is so confusing and every single day threats are made and until you fully understand what’s going on, it’s like, keep your opinion to yourself.

I’m aware that there’s gonna be a lot more to fight for in our present time. Until I know exactly what it is that I’m fighting for – everything keeps changing and one day this, one day that, and no one can figure out whose side to be on. People can only figure out how to hate, and I refuse to do that.

Person of Interest: Joe Mannetti

Joe Mannetti

Joe started out in early life wanting to be an actor, something he still carries with him today. He now lives in St. Petersburg but life has taken in from New York to Los Angeles to Connecticut and now Florida.

Today, Joe, who has a master’s degree in counseling, works in a home for wayward LGBTQ youth as a Youth Development Counselor. It’s a challenging job and he tries to help them overcome what he sees as a large sense of entitlement issues in today’s youth. “I want to do something to celebrate and give back to the community.” Joe also works fundraising for various causes close to his heart.

Joe is a self-described member of the bear community and he takes every opportunity to bring awareness to what he feels is a segment of the LGBTQ spectrum that often goes without mention and has little understanding. In his earlier days, Joe started bartending and waiting tables in LA. He soon became involved at the LGBT Center in Los Angeles through volunteering. He was introduced to Gail Rolf and Virginia Uribe who were the founders of Project 10, this country’s firs program geared to help LGBT youth.

Joe knew he needed more than just a desire to volunteer; he needed a platform for fundraising. He found his outlet in the bear community through contests where he won several titles. In 2006 he won Mr. Southern CA Cub, 2008 – Mr. LA Bear and Mr. Southern CA Bear, and in 2009 he won Mr. International Daddy Bear. These titles not only helped Joe connect more to the bear and leather communities but he became a public speaker in schools advocating for the communities he represented. “I feel there is a lack of male gay role models for kids to identify with. All they see is Ru Paul’s Drag Race and think becoming a drag queen is the only viable option open to them. I want to reach all kids with my message, particularly kids of color who seem the most at risk today.”  Joe also blogs and has an anti-bullying blog he promotes. His work has allowed him to reach into the HIV/AIDS youth service network, the transvestite community, and he’s worked with those suffering from crystal meth addiction.

Joe went back to his dream of being an actor and appeared in a horror-comedy film in 2014 for which he was awarded best lead actor at the San Diego Film Festival. Joe feels today’s leather community embraces inclusiveness, fosters a dialogue that facilitates appropriate sexual behavior, and teaches respect while being radically present. Similarly, the bear community, for Joe, represents an older segment of the entire LGBTQ community that is very important and has much of offer.

Matilda The Musical at the Dr. Phillips Center

Matilda The Musical

“Revolting Children, living in revolting times”

TIME Magazine’s #1 Show of the Year, “Matilda The Musical”, opens at the Dr. Phillips Center on Tuesday, May 9 for a limited one week run through May 14.
The show is based on the novel of the same name by Roald Dahl who also wrote classics children’s stories like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” and many others.
“Matilda The Musical” is directed by Tony Award winner Matthew Warchus (“God of Carnage”), who helms this production with a book by Tony Award-winning playwright Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Australian comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin. The show is the winner of over 70 international awards including four Tony Awards and a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards including Best Musical.
Matilda is a precocious five year-old girl with the gift of telekinesis who loves reading, overcomes obstacles caused by her family and school, and helps her teacher to reclaim her life.
The title role is played by three actresses; Gabby Gutierrez, Jaime MacLean and Jenna Weir. The principal cast also features (alphabetically): Jennifer Bowles (Miss Honey), Dan Chameroy (Miss Trunchbull), Keisha T. Fraser (Mrs. Phelps), Matt Harrington (Mr. Wormwood) and Darcy Stewart (Mrs. Wormwood).
It was a pleasure to sit down with Jennifer Bowles for this exclusive Hotspots Interview. Bowles is originally from Florida and is looking forward to performing in her home state.
Were you always an actor even as a child?

No, I absolutely wasn’t. I was a ballet dancer when I was little and very shy. No one ever expected me to become an actor.
What was your first professional/paid gig?

I did a tour of the musical “Wonderful Town” when I was just out of college.
When did you know performing would be your career?

In high school I made the transition from ballet to theater and that’s when I knew I wanted to do this as a living.
What has been your favorite role other than this one?

My favorite show that I have been in was “American Idiot.” It was my first Broadway show and there is something magical about your first Broadway show. The actors in that production were very special, and it felt like we were a bunch of misfits doing this awesome rock show on Broadway.
What is your fantasy role?

It would be playing Audrey in “Little Shop of Horrors.” I played Audrey in high school and would love to play her as an adult.
What should the Orlando audience expect from this production of “Matilda”?

I think they should expect it to be different than the movie as its much more like the book. However the show has added plotline, so it goes farther than the book. It does go much deeper and darker and it is one of the most beautiful shows I have ever done or seen. The music is brilliant and it’s an important show as it’s about a couple people who believe their voices can’t be heard. Then, they meet this little girl who helps them. The theme of the show is “Even though I am [only] one person I can still make a difference.”
The Ensemble of “Matilda The Musical” includes Jacob Anderson, Gabby Beredo, Darren Burkett, Jacqueline Burtney, Eric Craig, Talia Consentino, Stephen Diaz, Gregory Diaz IV, Blake Ferrante, Keisha T. Fraser, Heidi Friese, Michael D. Jablonski, Jim Kaplan, Marisa Kennedy, Anthony MacPherson, Tyler McKenzie, Soren Thayne Miller, Gray Monczka, Brittany Nicholas, Abigail Nicholson, Justin Packard, Molly Richardson, Kim Sava, Liz Schmitz, Brandon Stonestreet and Isabella Stuebing.
The production has sets and costumes by Tony Award winner Rob Howell, with choreography by Peter Darling, orchestrations, additional music and musical supervision by Christopher Nightingale, lighting by Tony Award winner Hugh Vanstone, and sound by Simon Baker.
Tickets are available at the Dr. Phillips Center Box Office, 445 S. Magnolia Avenue

Orlando, DrPhillipsCenter.org or by calling 844-513-2014. Ticket prices start at $33.75.

Varichina: The True Story of The Fake Life of Lorenzo de Santis

Regal Cinemas South Beach – Thursday, April 27 at 9 p.m.

Bari is an ancient city on Italy’s Adriatic coast (if Italy is a high heeled boot, Bari is where the heel meets the sole of the boot) and Varichina is the first openly gay man the city in the 1970s. Described in Italian as “ANTICONFORMISTA, AMBIGUO, BIZZARO, ECCESSIVO, ICONA POP- all traits most gay men can relate to, Varichina is nothing like what an Italian gay man might look like in your fantasies. But that’s what makes him real and gives him character. He’s gaudy, brash, and in your face at a time when it was not at all popular or acceptable to be so. In Italian with English subtitles, this film is a hybrid documentary/fictionalized story that takes a look back at how things were a few decades ago.

Before the show, enjoy a special screening of “MYami,” a film by local filmmaker Dmitry Zhitov about three artists who make their living and home in The Magic City. The film runs 24 minutes. There will also be a special screening of the Israeli film “Video Bar” that will run 11 minutes. Director Laura Lopez as well as “MYami” director Zhitov will have a Q&A after the films.

Play the Devil

Regal Cinemas South Beach- Thursday, April 27 at 9:15

Gregory is a handsome young Caribbean islander whose talent leads him to star the carnival play. His role causes him to be noticed by a successful older business man James, who takes Gregory under his wing, pushing him to grow in many ways, but awakening feelings that the young man struggles to come to terms with. Fraught with angst and tension, this tale from Trinidad and Tobago and The Bahamas is dark and intriguing. As the plot thickens, a confrontation with life-changing results brews between Gregory and James. Directed by Maria Govan, this film has won a slew of awards including The Jury Award for Best Feature Film at qFlix Philadelphia.

B&B

Regal Cinemas South Beach- Friday, April 28 at 7 p.m.

A British gay couple returns to throw their marriage in the face of a B&B owner who they successfully sued for discrimination after he refused to allow them to sleep in the same bed at his B&B. Now that they are married, they come back to start a bit of trouble and end up in a situation that is a bit more than they bargained for. This dark comedy is thriller with a plot that twists and turns and will keep audiences guessing till the very end. The film is making its North American debut and is really well done. It is directed by Joe Ahearne who, along with producer Jayne Chard, will be on-hand after the film for a Q&A with the audience.

The Pass

Regal Cinemas South Beach- Friday, April 28 at 9:15 p.m.

Ok, I have to admit- of all the films that are playing this year, this is the one that really piqued my interest. “The Pass” follows Jason (Russel Tovey) and Ade (Arinzé Kene) as soccer players who have known each other since their teens when they played together at the academy for a famous football (soccer) club. After a kiss in a hotel room when they are 19, their lives take separate paths in the world of professional soccer but the effects of that kiss in a Romanian hotel room reverberate through both of their lives. Tovey is at his absolute best in this film and not just because he (and his co-star Kene) spend A LOT of time in their undies. If you only see one film, this is the one to see.

Carlos Jauregui: The Unforgettable Fag

Regal Cinema South Beach- Saturday, April 29 at 2:30 p.m.

Carlos Jauregui was many things: gay rights activist, friend, lover, fighter, icon, and an inspiration to the masses. He fought for the visibility of gays, lesbians and transgender, and his conviction and courage transformed the lives of the Argentine LGBT community and the laws within the country. He led the first Pride March in Argentina, unifying the LGBT movement. He laid the foundations of dialogue leading the way to anti-discrimination laws. Not only did he fight for LGBT rights, he also fought his own internal battle with AIDS. In Spanish with English subtitles.

Closing Night Film

The Constitution (Ustav Repulike Hrvatske)

Regal Cinema South Beach- Saturday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m.

“The Constitution” is a collaboration film from Croatia, The Czech Republic, Slovenia, and The UK and is presented in Croatian with English subtitles. Four very different people live in the same building, but avoid each other because of the differences in how they live, what they believe in, and where they come from. They would probably never exchange a word, but misfortune pushes them towards each other. Their lives entangle in ways that profoundly challenge deeply held beliefs and prejudices surrounding material status, sexual orientation, nationality and religion. Slowly and painfully, they begin to open up to each other and recognize the essential humanity each of them possesses. This film is poignant and comedic in equal measures. “The Constitution” is directed by Rajko Grlić and runs 90 minutes.

Deep Water:  The Real Story

Regal Cinemas South Beach- Sunday, April 30 at 4:45 p.m.

This documentary from Australia tells the true life story of up to 80 murders, 30 unsolved cases, thousands of assaults on gay men. In the 1980s and 1990s a murderous epidemic grips Sydney. The attackers are united by contempt. Their targets united by the fact they are gay. “Deep Water: The Real Story” presents the full account of the gay hate crimes that bloodied Sydney’s coastline. It stirs up old cases in the hope that new evidence will rise to the surface and maybe, after all these years, there will be peace for the dead and justice for their loved ones.

Like Foam (Como La Espuma)

Regal Cinema South Beach- Sunday, April 30 at 7 p.m.

This film from Spain presents an emotional journey of lost human beings trying to find themselves takes place in what could be considered a fairly strange place: an orgy in a Spanish mansion. A message circulates from mobile phone to mobile phone and it is started! All at once, a diverse range of strangers get together, searching for sex, and in doing so they expose their funny, sexy and profound sides. Like Foam shows that things are not always what they seem and never has an orgy been so funny and full of love. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles and is directed by Roberto Perez Toledo.

Hot Talk: The Best Chatter on Facebook this Week

“I don’t remember a time in my life when I haven’t been submerged in the LGBT community. It’s the only community that, even though I shouldn’t have belonged, accepted me. It was the only world I ever really felt comfortable in because, as I say in my book, I don’t know what it feels like to fit in.”

KELLY OSBORNE
“So I took a DNA test  and it turns out I am 100% that bitch.”

Andrew S., Fort Lauderdale
“As an actor, you have to keep some sort of enigma and mystery. There’s a dignity to keeping private.”

Gay British actor LUKE EVANS, who plays Gaston in the remake of Beauty and The Beast, explaining why he keeps his personal affairs private.
I think it’s all about you not trying to decide what your daughter or son should be or what you want them to become. It’s all about loving them no matter who they are or what they decide to do. When my son came out, I was so happy for him… you got to support your child, because there are so many people who try to discriminate against them, so they need you to support them.”

Basketball legend EARVIN “MAGIC” JOHNSON, speaking about his gay son on Ellen.
“It’s a whole new world now where being gay and lesbian is not something that people are hiding like they did when we started almost 20 years ago. I think there’s an opportunity to now celebrate all the other initials of LGBTQ. It will be great to come out of this next round and feel like we’re normalizing an even larger segment of underrepresented people on prime time television.

Actress DEBRA MESSING, talking about the much-anticipated reprise of the trail-blazing NBC show Will & Grace, which also stars Eric McCormack, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally. The sitcom, which aired from 1998 to 2006, was one of the first prime time shows to feature gay characters.

Genre Latino: Hit List

¡Salud!

Yo, personalmente, no tengo menores a quienes cuidar. Lo que hago es que salgo con muchos borrachos para que esto nunca me haga falta. Así pueden escucharme decir cosas como “Qué lindo, se está babeando” o “Parece que alguien tiene caquitas. Vamos a bañarlo y cambiarlo, mi gordito bello”.

Cheers!

I saw this adorable couple the other day and they were walking down the streets greeting passersby as they pushed a stroller carrying the most beautiful baby inside. They smiled, waved, talked about their last trip to Europe… Then I stopped for a second and I thought “Damn! I REALLY need a drink!” It’s not that I hate people with the cookie-cutter perfect kind of life that I wish I had because I’m a jealous monster. It’s simply that, sometimes, I just wish they…moved…to a…secluded…island in a far away planet. Ok, maybe I am a bit jealous. Kidding! I am happy for everyone’s happiness. It gives us motivation to better ourselves at times and spreading our own happiness and being proud of their successes and ours makes this plant much more habitable.

I don’t have babies myself, but I used to make up for it by dating lots of drunk guys. You would often catch me saying things like: “Awww, how cute… he’s drooling” – “Oh my god, he said my name!” – “Who’s your daddy?” – “Oops! Somebody made a booboo. Let’s go home and clean you up, you piggy”.

It amazes me greatly to see the fervor, time and money invested on drinking alcohol in our community. I didn’t realize how much I consumed alcohol until someone pointed out to me the way I give directions to people who are lost. “You know where Palace Bar is? Well, you make a left there and, when you hit Perversions Liquor Store, make a right and you’ll see the home for the elderly you’re looking for”. Why do we, as gay men consume more alcohol than anyone else? What is this void we try to fill, if any? Many are the theories: drinking facilitates sexual encounters, it allows you to be less shy when talking to people, it releases endorphins needed to forget about your troubles or there are simply not that many options other than the bar scene making us all prone to repeat the same outing experience over and over again. There’s nothing wrong with the bars (I myself enjoy the company of my good friend Martin E. Glass) but we, as a community, tend to do this in excess.

Did you know there’s a gay cruise, gay bowling nights and gay midnight kayaking? Have you ever hosted a pot luck, game night or theme party at home? What ever happened to the movies, the theater or the beautiful beaches that surround us? Take on a new hobby, invest in a gym membership, read more, indulge in shopping or travelling. Many are the options and they are just as fun.  By all means, have a drink and toast to your life, which can be filled with many resources for fun and for goodness sake, don’t drink like Liza Minelli and you too can avoid having Lindsay Lohan’s police record. If the number of drinks you’ve had matches the number of times Elizabeth Taylor has been married, you’ve probably had enough.
I understand many are the reasons around us to want to be plastered 24-7: the holidays filled with crazy shoppers, those pesky holiday parties we HAVE to go to, the politics of our nation and our economic situation, the fight for marriage and a safer military life among many other things we try to squeeze in between feuds, break-ups, jobs, etc. I know sometimes life may seem like a gigantic evil-ridden monkey just flinging excrement in our faces, but no matter how crappy (pun intended) things may seem, there is always the promise that things happen for a very powerful reason and they will always improve in the end.

Who am I kidding?! Go ahead, have a barrel of beer before things get any worse. I’ll be right there next to you in a matter of seconds buying us both the first round of drinks! Have a great month, babies!

A Q&A With Christine Hanson, President Elect of Florida Realtors

Real Estate Special Feature

Christine Hanson- President-elect of Florida Realtors

Fort Lauderdale native takes over Florida’s largest association of realtors in 2018

This past February, Christine Hansen, broker and owner of Century 21 Hansen Realty in Fort Lauderdale was elected to lead Florida Realtors as their president next year. Hansen has been in the real estate business for decades and for years she’s been involved in the statewide organization of realtors. Over the past five years, she has served in nearly every role on the executive board, so it was only natural that she step up to lead the organization into the roaring 20s.

Hansen recently chatted with Hotspots about getting into the business, her role at Florida Realtors, as well as pitfalls and scams to avoid when purchasing your dream home.

How did you get into Real Estate and how long have you been in the business?

I got into Real Estate because my mom was the broker of the office that I am now the Owner/Broker of. It was exactly 30 years ago this year. Our office was founded in 1977 and I got my real estate license in 1987 and my broker’s license in 1989. So it was my mom!!

Generally, how is the market now in South Florida?

We definitely have a good market. There’s a lot of things that are going on in regards to the landscape of the market. For example, interest rates are still low, however there have been a lot of reports that they are going to start to go up. I think that is helping buyers, who are on the fence, waiting to see if they should buy now or not, to actually start seriously looking at purchasing a home. They want to take advantage while the interest rates are still low. The second thing is inventory. Obviously, the lower priced homes allow more people to qualify to buy them so we do have a bit of an inventory situation. We need more inventory, especially in the price point between $200,000 and $400,000. Those homes tend to go relatively quick.

In terms of the LGBT Community are there any special areas that are hot right now?

I don’t know, as far as this minute, what would be a new hot spot. My office is off of Commercial Blvd. and Bayview and I probably have at least 50-60% of my agents are LGBT. We can see evidence everywhere, from Lighthouse Point to Oakland Park, to Poinsettia Heights, to Coral Ridge. I honestly feel that now, because people are out of the “dark ages” especially here in South Florida, that it’s not as important to the LGBT community [to live in a specific neighborhood] as it was at one time. Not only is there acceptance, but there is much less housing discrimination. People are comfortable in more areas. They have more opportunity to choose based on their lifestyle. Do you want to be in a high-rise downtown, do you want to be by the beach or intercostal.

Tell us more about you role at Florida Realtors.

So, next year in 2018 I will be Florida Realtors’ president. Most realtors get involved in their local association; I was president of the Fort Lauderdale association in 2007. Since then in 2014, I ran for and was elected to be the secretary for the Florida Realtors, in 2015 I for treasurer, and last year, in 2016 I was elected vice president and I am currently serving that term. Florida Realtors has over 165,000 members and we have a budget of over $19 million. It is so important to be involved because this is the industry and profession that I love, I have dedicated my entire life to it and it’s nice to be able to work with realtors throughout the state and have positive impact on our industry. It has given me more of an in-depth knowledge of our industry and the various chapters and arms of this profession.

What does your role as president encompass?

As president of Florida Realtors, one of the charges is to be the voice of real estate for all of our members. We do a lot advocacy. Talking about personal property rights, we’ve been fighting in Tallahassee to eliminate the business rent tax, we are the only state in the country that still has that, so we are trying to get rid of it to bring more business to our communities. There are a lot of things that we do that help where realtors don’t even know the things that could have happened because we are able to avoid them before they get there. Also for the public, with regards to property rights especially the waterways. We get involved in a very public and political way and it’s all based on homeownership and our community.

The second thing is to bring business into our state. WE do a lot of things internationally to let consumers outside of our country know that there is so much that Florida can offer, and that will help our commercial and residential realtors.

The third charge is to build relationships at the state and local level so that we are able to hear about issues and address them. Right now there is a serious issue about fraud and wire transfers. We are very involved right now trying to get the word out that if you are going to do a wire transfer set it up verbally and make it with a person that you know, that you’ve worked with before, and that you trust. Otherwise, work out another method of payment. We are seeing a lot of fraud in that area now.
For more information on Florida’s real estate market or to contact Christine Hansen, visit Century21Hansen.com or call the office at 954-776-5400. Her office is located at 3010 E. Commercial Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.

Actor Matthew Pappadia Talks ‘Happy Ending’ at Empire Stage

“Happy Ending,” the newest play from Ronnie Larsen, creator of the Off Broadway sensation, “Making Porn,” will receive its world premiere, May 4 – 28, at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Dr. in Fort Lauderdale. The play has already been booked for a second production at the Above the Stag theater in London.
Based on a real encounter, Larsen’s drama explores the unlikely relationship that develops between a gay masseuse, Andrew, who is attracted to straight men, and his straight client, Mr. Miller, during an intimate massage session. What starts as a standard Swedish rubdown takes a number of unexpected turns as the men, in turn, make startling revelations and bare their hopes and dreams to each other. Yes, there is the literal “happy ending” that accompanies many massages, but will the men arrive at the proverbial “happy ending” they both so desperately seek?
“You know something sexual is going to happen because it’s my play,” said Larsen, “but, I don’t think audiences will be prepared for the emotional twists and turns these characters take. This is the closest I’ve come to writing a real psychological thriller.”
More than 100 New York-based actors auditioned for the two-man show, including Matthew Pappadia, a degreed occupational therapist who brings his professional training to the role of Andrew, the masseuse.
New Yorker, Matthew Robert Pappadia most recently, received his master’s degree in Occupational Therapy with plans to use theater to improve the well-being of LGBT youth. Since graduation, Matthew has helped develop many new works for film, with his most recent involvement in the series, “Don’t Schmuck It Up” (Ashley). Matthew also maintains a career in international modeling, having been featured in “Vanity Hype” Magazine last August. He will be preparing soon for his third standup comedy show with the Bolton Center of New York. As well as performing, Matthew Pappadia is the CEO of PapsFitness, an online health and wellness consultation business. It was a pleasure to sit down with Matthew for this Hotspots exclusive interview.

Have you always been a performer even as a kid or when did it start?

I have performed my whole life and I went to school Ithaca college and I got accepted to the acting program, but i switched my major to occupational therapy in my freshman year in order to help kids with issues through acting. However, this is the first time I will have been back on the stage since college.

When did you get your first professional job and what was it?

It was a Bazooka Bubble gum commercial when I was 14.
You are an actor, stand up comedienne, model, Masseuse, fitness guru and occupational therapist, which do you enjoy most and why?

I enjoy the feeling of touching people and leaving them with a higher sense of well-being, in whatever context that is.

It doesn’t seem like you have a lot of free time, but when you do what do you do for fun?

I love to hang out with my mom and do drawings together. I also love to read, and I am constantly looking for material for my stand up shows or new routines for my work out clients.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Spontaneous, selfless, and faithful.

Are you excited about starring in the production of Happy Ending at Empire Theater?

I am overjoyed to star in this production. I am leaving my full time as an OT, to go back to acting. This is a new starting point for me. It’s the first chapter of my new book.

What does the future hold for Matthew?

Wherever god takes me. I want to continue to build Paps fitness and open gym and also open a theater rehab for adolescents and kids.

For more information on Matthew you can visit Papsfitness.net, or on Instagram@Papsfitness or on Facebook@matthewpaps.
The world premiere production of “Happy Ending” by Ronnie Larsen will be performed Thursday at 8 p.m., Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m., May 4 – 28, at EmpireStage, 1140 N. Flagler Dr. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $35 – $50 at RonnieLarsen.com.

Hot Bodies: Great Day in the Morning!

Great Day in the Morning!

By Tom Bonanti

Did you know that your morning routine is greatly responsible for setting the tone for the rest of your day? Whether you roll out of the sack begrudgingly, or bound out of bed like the cock-of-the-walk, here are some morning rituals that are sure to make the rest of your day stellar.

First, stop hitting the snooze button and get up and face the day. Give yourself plenty of time so that you don’t have to scramble and rush to get yourself and your agenda in order for the day. When you awaken, take time to stretch, breathe, check your surroundings, look outside at the weather and try to give thanks for the day ahead. There’s just something lucky about the early morning hours that can give you a hearty jump-start on the rest of the world.

Second, drink plenty of water and continue to drink heartily throughout the day. When you wake up, your body is already somewhat dehydrated and in a catabolic state. Fueling it with H2O and the proper nutrition at the outset will offset fatigue, brain fog, and crankiness as the day wears on. Keep a pitcher or jug of cold water in the fridge (you can add freshly squeezed lemons or other citrus for a zip of flavor and Vitamin C) and make a dash for it as soon as you get out of bed.

Third, when it comes to a great morning wake-up call, you can’t beat having sex first thing in the morning. As a morning ritual, sex relaxes you, gets the adrenalin and endorphins pumping, and sets a positive, upbeat tone for the rest of your day. As they say, try it, you’ll like it!

Fourth, take some time out for quiet meditation in the morning as you connect with yourself and the rest of the world. Meditation may include soft music, some spiritual reading, a yoga stretch or just some much needed quiet time to reflect upon your life and its blessings. Meditation doesn’t include checking e-mails, sending texts, or Skyping with noisy acquaintances and relatives.

Fifth, eat a nutritious breakfast. Make it simple and easy. Include low glycemic index carbohydrates (fruit and whole grains), lean protein (chicken breasts, eggs, yogurt, low-fat dairy), and skip high fat, processed foods like muffins, donuts, or fast food solutions.

Finally, there are a whole host of benefits to being a morning exercise person. People who work out in the AM report better productivity, a revved- up metabolism, and better sleep at night. In addition, working out in the morning can help burn fat more efficiently, elevate your mood and boost self-esteem.

Need Wood: Sad & Broken

I’m a woman who’s read your book three times, working on the fourth. I love your style and your common sense attitudes toward health and insight into male minds.   I’m writing because I am married to a man who I believe is gay. We’ve never had sex – not before or after the wedding. Not even on the honeymoon night. From comments he’s made and where his eyes wander, I believe he is attracted to men, not women.  He makes constant references to cute men, tight asses, love the way males look and feel and so forth.  I should have known  –  all the signs were there – but I liked him so much as a person and I was terribly lonely.

I believe he only married me because was trying to deny his Southern Baptist upbringing in the belief that homosexuality was a damnable sin. Being married made him “safe” and meant he didn’t have to face some facts about himself. I hate him for using me as his “beard”, but also I know I should have cut it off before saying “I do”.
Here is the problem: even though he refuses to have any physical contact, let alone sex (I’ve offered him everything from anal to oral to hand jobs; he turns me down flat and repelled) he won’t hear of any options. As best as I can tell he seems to expect me to live a life of faithful celibacy. He won’t even consider counseling to work things out. He’s very controlling. I don’t have a job anymore and I don’t have any friends I can go to. My family, also strong Southern Baptist by nature, refuse to countenance the idea of my leaving him for another life. I don’t have any money of my own and I don’t have a car. What can I do to get out of this awful situation?

– SAD AND BROKEN

Dear Liza Minelli

You married a guy that was gayer than Christmas at Bloomingdale’s and it’s just now occurring to you that it won’t work? Honey, those weren’t clues he was throwing at you, they were meteors. And now you’ve gotta crawl out of the holes they made. Or rather YOU made. Accepting responsibility is your first step. Don’t kid yourself – you aren’t a victim; you’re a volunteer. He may be an a**hole but you gave him all the tools to shape his a**holiness encouragement, compliance and  an unwillingness to leave when you could have.

That ends the Simon Cowell portion of the column. Time for a little of Jennifer Lopez. Start by making a promise to yourself: “I’m going to leave him and find someone who loves me for who I am, someone who will pound me into the box springs so hard I’ll have to change the mattress every year or so”.
Ok that’s more Woody than JLo, but still… Here are some strategies. Strategy #1 Find someone you can talk to. A caring pastor, a priest a community counselor who won’t change you.  Strategy #2 Google yourself to salvation. Put in something like “help for women” and you’ll find sites like womansdivorce.com and the womenalliance.org that can help you get clothing, transportation, financial advice and more. BTW, these sites offer great advice for gay men trapped in seemingly hopeless gay relationships. You ain’t the only fool out there, you know. Now, go and get yourself unfooled.

Creep of the Week: Mark Green

Trump continues his tradition of filling posts in his cabinet with people who are actively opposed to LGBT people having rights or even being called people. He’s really giving the George W. Bush administration a run for its money.

Flash back with me to the good old days of President Barack Obama. Remember when we had a president who wasn’t an insane rambling dum-dum? It seems so long ago.

Anyway, as you know, Obama made the United States Military G-A-Y. Gayer than a monkey’s uncle, even. It was under Obama that we bid farewell to the decades old “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy, under which LGB service members had to stay in the closet and nobody was allowed to ask them about their sexuality and somehow that didn’t work at all because wouldn’t you know it, LGB folks were still discriminated against and booted out of the service for being queer. Obama also nominated Eric Fanning as the Secretary of the Army, the first openly gay person to hold that office once the Senate finally got around to confirming him.

But you can’t Make America Great Again with a homo leading your Army mens, you need a REAL MAN! And so Trump, who for f#cksake is the president, has nominated Mark Green to the position.
Green is a state senator from Tennessee and he’s been super busy in his home state sticking it to the gays, legislatively, that is.
He supports letting businesses freely discriminate against LGBT people (because Jesus), wants to force schools to discriminate against trans students (because bathrooms), and thinks teachers shouldn’t have to teach things that go against their Bible (because learning). In other words, Green wants to green-light discrimination in Tennessee, and could now bring that skill set to the Army.

Last year Green seemed to be calling for people to protect themselves from transgender people by force. “We are back to where the country was at its beginning, and it’s the armed citizen who will defend this nation,” Green said according to The Hill. “And there’s something else that we’ve got to protect ourselves from, and it is an overreaching federal government. The notion that Mr. Obama thinks that he can tell the state of Tennessee who can go into a men’s bathroom or a women’s bathroom is absurd.”

He also called being transgender “a disease.” And so you can imagine how opening up military service to transgender people, a process that began last year, will no doubt go swimmingly under Green’s leadership.
Needless to say, LGBT advocates aren’t happy. “All soldiers and their families, including those who are LGBT, should have confidence that the Secretary of the Army has their back and is working for their best interest,” said American Military Partners Association President Ashley Broadway-Mack in a statement. “Unfortunately, based on his vicious, anti-LGBT record, Mark Green cannot be trusted to ensure all those who serve have the support they need and deserve.”

“Green is a dangerous figure both because his policies are extreme and because he is shrewd at portraying them as moderate,” Nathaniel Frank writes in Slate. Frank points out that the bills Green backs are intended to discriminate against LGBTQ people, but don’t actually say so. A legislative reach-around, if you will.
Considering we just let Mitch McConnell break the Senate and thus let a president under FBI investigation put a right-wing extremist on the Supreme Court for life, I’m not optimistic about Green’s nomination getting blocked. Still, that shouldn’t stop you from contacting your senators with a hearty, “Hell no!”

The moral of this story is to vote. F#cking vote. Vote, god d@mn it. Vote, vote, vote. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, vote. Especially in the midterms.

RuPaul’s Drag Race: Eureka Untucked

Week 5 started out with a Selfie mini challenge where the girls had to shoot a selfie in quick drag with the pit crew. Alexis Michelle won and received a $1,000 gift card from FierceQueens.com. We find out that Eureka really hurt herself in the cheerleader challenge and is now on crutches. The Main challenge was the girls starring in Broadways newest sensation (LOL) Kardashian, the Musical, a hip hop “her”stery lesson and lip synch extravaganza. Since Alexis won she got to choose who played which role. On the runway the category was “Faux Fur Fabulous.” Shea Coulee who played Blac Chyna, won the challenge. The bottom 2 were Cynthia and Farrah and after the lips synch a staff member comes over to Ru and she excuses herself for a few minutes and comes back and neither of the bottom 2 go home. Instead she sends Eureka home, due to her injury, and offers her to be on next season.
How shocked were you when Ru came back and made the announcement that you would be leaving and how excited are you to be coming back next season?
I think the shock was that I was called up there to begin with. I assumed they rethought about it and thought I was the worst. I was stunned when she gave me the news. I was going home on something I couldn’t control and nothing could help me. I am extremely excited to be coming back, especially now that surgery is over. I am a fighter and I get to relive my dream. I will be tearing up that competition next season.

What are you going to do to prepare for next season?
Honestly I think I am going to be a little more grown as I have had some time with my injury to learn patience, and I think I am more mature. I am not as thirsty to be the center of attention but more thirsty to win. I have to come in guns blazing as I know they will be expecting more from me.

At what age did drag become an interest & how did you pick your name?
I started going to the bar before I turned 17 and had a fake ID. When I turned 18 the fake ID expired and I couldn’t get into bar, so I decided to dress up in drag, and they let me in. Other drag queens convinced me to do the talent show. I kept doing it and never stopped doing drag

My biological mother’s name was Eureka, so I modeled myself after her. O’hara is my drag father’s last name. His picked the name O’hara from “Gone With The Wind.”

How many times did you apply to be on RPDR and how did it feel when you found out you got chosen?
I applied for 4 year s and it was life changing when I got chosen.

Although it was short, tell me about your RuPaul’s Drag Race experience?
Honestly I loved every second of it even when the pressures were high or they rushed us, My motto was “I am so blessed to be here, and I will do whatever they want.”

Are you single/married, etc.?
Single, and my type is anyone who wants me….LOL! You have to be attracted to me before I get interested in you. I generally like smaller guys, because I need the bed space.
Who do you want to win?
I know most people would be surprised, but Trinity is one of my choices. Even though we do not have a good personal relationship, she is an amazing entertainer. However, my favorites are Sasha or Nina, as they both represent something different in our community. They are both creative and do things out of the box.
Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.
I have a twin sister.
What’s ahead for Eureka Ohara?
I am actually releasing a single (Ed. Note: already out by the time you read this) and it’s called “Body Positivity.”  I am also releasing a second single in a few weeks called “Stomp,” and it’s about the big girls slaying the runway in the ballroom scene. I am also workig on a one woman show, and it is the story of my life and it called “The Biography of the Un-explored Elephant.”

Drink N’ Drag Sundays at Rumors

The Power of Impulse

How a few are making a difference in HIV education for many in South Florida

Steve McAleer is the President of Impulse Group South Florida which is a local chapter of Impulse Group, an all-volunteer group of activists who have banded together to help fight HIV and provide opportunities for men to have a chance to talk about HIV/AIDS and promote healthy lifestyles and break social barriers that limit diagnosis and treatment among gay community.

After seeing HIV rates soaring among gay men, Impulse Group founder Jose Ramos decided to do something about it in his hometown of Los Angeles, CA. He met with a group of friends to talk about the issue and in collaboration with AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), whom quickly came onboard as a key player. Together they organized the first Impulse Group. Finding quick success in LA, the group expanded south of the border and opened a chapter in Mexico followed by a third chapter right here in South Florida.

It was a pleasure to chat with McAleer, who, besides being a full time realtor with Douglas Elliman Real Estate, is serving as president of the local Impulse chapter as well as the director of events for Impulse Group, the larger organization that is expanding across the globe.  We asked McAleer to tell us a little more about Impulse Group of South Florida, how he got involved in the organization, and where he sees the fight against HIV/AIDS heading in the future.

How did you get involved in Impulse Group?

Originally, though some friends of mine, I got to meet the founder of Impulse, Jose Ramos. About five or six years ago, I saw that he had founded the group out in LA because numerous people close to his age were contracting HIV and he really wanted to do something about it. He didn’t feel like in today’s world so many people should be contracting the disease. I found out that they were looking to expand into South Florida led by AJ Alegria, a close friend of mine, as the local chapter President because the infection rate was so high locally. I went to the first recruiting meeting that Jose and AJ hosted here in Fort Lauderdale. Their mission and passion to make a difference really sparked my interest.  At that point I decided to volunteer to join so I have been with the organization since it formed in 2013. I started as the director of events, and then I became vice president until late last year. After successfully leading a team of volunteers to build and run the organization for over three years, AJ stepped down in December 2016. At that point I was honored to be voted in to take over the Presidency to lead an amazing and talented board of directors and members who I consider my family.

What is the purpose of Impulse Group or what do you guys set out to do?

Impulse Group has 18 chapters around the world including chapters in the U.S., Asia, London, Brazil and Mexico. We are also working on expansion into Chicago this year as well as areas in Western Europe. Impulse Group South Florida is a lifestyle. We are an advocacy and social group of gay men educated and passionate in all aspects of gay men’s health. We produce fun and exciting events that create a safe and comfortable space to talk openly about things such as STI’s (sexually transmitted infections) and substance abuse and provide education and resources for those who need assistance. At most of our events, we offer free HIV testing to make sure that everyone knows their status and can deal with it properly. We started as an HIV advocacy group but because there are so many things that affect our health as members of the gay community, we have expanded our overall services to hit those pillars and more.

Why is a group like Impulse needed in South Florida?

South Florida, including Broward County, is currently the number one location in the country for new HIV infections, especially with the younger demographic of those under the age of 35 years old. I think that that has happened due to a lack of targeted education and a lack of open, non-stigmatizing conversation. We really strive to throw events that make it easier to talk about your status, about stigma, and about all forms of prevention so that people will be more educated and not feel guilty or embarrassed about going and getting tested. We plan events that make it as comfortable, as easy, and as smooth as possible to be able to know your status so that if you are positive you can get on a proper regime to stay undetectable and stay healthy, or if you are negative, to stay negative.

Where do you see the fight against HIV going over the next 10 years?

Currently there are numerous prevention methods available including Condoms, PrEP and PEP (post exposure prophylaxis). We do, however, see fewer people using condoms now because of the availability of PrEP or PEP. We strive to make sure that as many people as possible know their status. If everyone that is positive knows they are positive and stays undetectable and the people who are negative use the prevention tools that are available to them, we would virtually eradicate the disease. I feel we can stop its spreading. But, the stigma that is out there often makes people not feel comfortable getting tested, start on their antiretroviral medicine or even disclose their status to people when appropriate. The only thing we can do is keep fighting the fight to make sure that people have all the information they need in their sexual health tool kit to remain healthy. Hopefully the treatment and prevention methods continue to get stronger and more successful.

How realistic is the idea of an AIDS free generation in our lifetime?

Well, we all have to stay as optimistic and vigilant as possible to continue to push our government into more research and getting the pharmaceutical companies to develop the medication that will eradicate the disease. I know there is a lot of effort going into it, but I am hoping that momentum doesn’t decrease. I think once we can get rid of the stigma that still exists about HIV that alone will help. If you are comfortable about talking about your status and using the prevention tools available, fewer people will transmit the disease.
If you are interested in Impulse Group South Florida, you can find more information at facebook.com/impulseSoFL. They invite the entire community to join them at their next event, the return of their Evolution Pool Party, which will take place on Sunday, May 21 at the National Hotel in Miami Beach. The event will feature DJ Dan Slater. Tickets are limited but admission is free. They will be providing free HIV testing on site as well as other educational opportunities and lots of fun!
