Great Day in the Morning!
By Tom Bonanti
Did you know that your morning routine is greatly responsible for setting the tone for the rest of your day? Whether you roll out of the sack begrudgingly, or bound out of bed like the cock-of-the-walk, here are some morning rituals that are sure to make the rest of your day stellar.
First, stop hitting the snooze button and get up and face the day. Give yourself plenty of time so that you don’t have to scramble and rush to get yourself and your agenda in order for the day. When you awaken, take time to stretch, breathe, check your surroundings, look outside at the weather and try to give thanks for the day ahead. There’s just something lucky about the early morning hours that can give you a hearty jump-start on the rest of the world.
Second, drink plenty of water and continue to drink heartily throughout the day. When you wake up, your body is already somewhat dehydrated and in a catabolic state. Fueling it with H2O and the proper nutrition at the outset will offset fatigue, brain fog, and crankiness as the day wears on. Keep a pitcher or jug of cold water in the fridge (you can add freshly squeezed lemons or other citrus for a zip of flavor and Vitamin C) and make a dash for it as soon as you get out of bed.
Third, when it comes to a great morning wake-up call, you can’t beat having sex first thing in the morning. As a morning ritual, sex relaxes you, gets the adrenalin and endorphins pumping, and sets a positive, upbeat tone for the rest of your day. As they say, try it, you’ll like it!
Fourth, take some time out for quiet meditation in the morning as you connect with yourself and the rest of the world. Meditation may include soft music, some spiritual reading, a yoga stretch or just some much needed quiet time to reflect upon your life and its blessings. Meditation doesn’t include checking e-mails, sending texts, or Skyping with noisy acquaintances and relatives.
Fifth, eat a nutritious breakfast. Make it simple and easy. Include low glycemic index carbohydrates (fruit and whole grains), lean protein (chicken breasts, eggs, yogurt, low-fat dairy), and skip high fat, processed foods like muffins, donuts, or fast food solutions.
Finally, there are a whole host of benefits to being a morning exercise person. People who work out in the AM report better productivity, a revved- up metabolism, and better sleep at night. In addition, working out in the morning can help burn fat more efficiently, elevate your mood and boost self-esteem.
