Five Effective Ways to Banish Negativity

Last month they decided to cut your overtime at work and now you’re stressed over what you need to trim from your already spartan budget. A couple of days ago you learned that one friend has been diagnosed with cancer and another couple you pal around with is throwing in the towel on their relationship. Every time you check the news you feel frustrated, angry and helpless over what’s happening in this country and across the globe. Sometimes it seems that everywhere you turn there is stress, anxiety and toxicity. Remember, you don’t have to become a victim to all this negativity.  The key to your own happiness and well-being lies within you.  Here are some effective and creative ways to become a powerhouse of positive energy.

Retreat and simplify. Your energy has an inverse relationship to the amount of noise and clutter in your life. Clear your closets and house of obsolete possessions. Disconnect from self-absorbed, so- called friends who drain your energy. Say “No” to unwanted social commitments that swallow up your valuable free time. Schedule some “me” time – read, listen to music, take a walk, swim or bike ride – anything that will refresh and replenish you!

Refuse to be controlled by social media. Tune out the frenetic information overload that bombards you from e-mails, texts, tweets, blogs and Facebooking. A lot of this is either nonsensical clatter, outright negativity, or other stuff that really isn’t important. If you find the idea of turning off your phone, or shutting down your computer for a few hours unacceptable, then you’re just the one who needs to take a break!

Stay happily active. Exercise, even just 20 minutes a day, gets those feel good endorphins pumping and clears your mind as you do something clean and invigorating for the body. Enjoy fresh air and Florida sunshine by taking your activities outdoors.

Banish negative energy. Ancient Chinese medicine teaches that the body and mind are vitally linked; energy (chi) regulates a person’s physical, mental and spiritual health; and that each of us is composed of opposing, inseparable forces – Yin and Yang – that need to stay balanced. When your chi flows smoothly, your world is a finer place. Stress, noise and negativity cause toxic energy imbalances to mind and body. Balance your chi by trying acupuncture, Yoga, massage or guided meditation.

Check out and indulge. You may not be able to afford expensive spa treatments and amenities, but you can try an at home spa approach.  Relax with an aromatherapy bath or shower by adding a few drops of lavender to the steamy water. Apply a comforting chilled gel eye mask to your face as you nap. Try rubbing your temples with massage lotion containing a few drops of peppermint essential oil for invigoration. Be creative, be good to yourself!
